it has always upheld. Its past histo
ry is a sufficient indication of whit
its future course will be. Having
thus far assisted in' everihroWing
wrong, oppression, and wickedness in
every form; standing bY the Govern
ment in the dark days of rebellion, it
shall still be found earnestly laboring
to secure the fruits of the glorious
victory, by- which• this country was
restored to peace and quiet. It will
be our aim to make the Barcena an
instructive 'find entertaining family
newspaper, faithfully recording the
current news of the day, bofh gener
aljuid local, and especi l ay devoted
to the interests of 'this coimunity.
Its influence will always b e\ e xerted
in favor of right, justice, reform and
.Iconomy. It will nut fail to criticise
when criticism is deserved; to con-
demn what is wrong or amiss; or,
to boldly declare the truth, whatever
may be the result, untrammeled by
the views of any individual or-com

We propose to give a still wider
dissemination of what we believe to
be correct principles and doctrines,
by an increased circulation of the
REPORTER, and to, this end ask the
assistance and co-operation of the
friends of the cause throughout the
county, who by a little . effort can add
very materially to its present sub
scription list. As an inducement to
subscribers, we propose to furnish the
paper thirteen mynas: for two dollars.
Any pe'rson Sending us that amount
will receivO the'ReeorrEa for the re

month for nothing.
CLusa.—We will furnish the RE

$1,50 per annum, and an extra copy
to the getter up of the club.
Clubs are now forming at nearly
every Post Office in the County. It
will be but a little trouble for every
subscriber to procure one new name
for a club. There are now eight
thousand Republican voters in the
county, not more thaw one half of
whomiare taking the %TOMER. By
a little effort on the part, of our
friends it can be placed in uatirly ev

THE SPEAKEHSHIP.
We publish in another column an

Speakership of the House of Repre
sentatives. We do not know that
our member, Mr. WEBB Will be can
didate for the position, but trust he
iffit be, as we are satisfied that a
more judicious selection could not be
made. There may be other members
of the House more thoroughly versed
iu parliamentary tactics, but none
better fitted in all respects for the
place. -He is a man of acknowleged
ability and unimpeachable character.
With such a man as -Mr. WEan in the
Speaker's chair the cor_upt - rings
which attempt to control the , Legis
lature, would lose their I ()Wer,' and
the great corporations of thp i State
would have nothing more Cian justice
accorded them. If Mr. W. consents
to allow his mane to be used in con
nection with the place, w , have no
doubt -that he will be selt eted. The
House would eel-thinly. di) itself cred
it by honoring him.

and other Protestants who have ex
pressed similar liberal views, -the
Freeman's Journal says:.
If the Catholic translation of the Book of
Holy Writ, w,hich is to be found in the homes of
all our littler educated Catholics,' were to ho
dissected by the ablest Catholic theologian in
the land, and merely lessons to be takenfronilt
-- such as Catholic mothers read to their child
ren: and with all tliqtoles aud comments, in
the popular edition, dothers added, with the
\ highest Catholc indorsement—and it those ad
truxable Bible leasonssrere to be ruled as to be

diminish, in any substantial degree, the objee

will net subject our Catholic children to tour
tencluy4 we will not expose our Catholic child
ren to aisociation with -all the children who,
have a right to attend the public schools :"' And
again- "The, 'State' or the *City' has no more
right to tat 'me for schooling my, neighbors'
children, than for feeding them, or clothing
them or housing them. The utmost that can
be granted is, that, for abandoned childreulhe
State may provvide schooling; 'as it provides
food and clothes, for its paupers:*
The N. Y. Tab et; in a like strain, al
luding to the astion of the Cincinnati

question, says:
"If this has been done widi s h view to recon
ciling Catliollito the common school system,
itsimrprise will not be- realized. It does not
meet nor in any degree lessen our objection to
the impracticability of that systerriin a viiied ,
community of Catholics and protestants, for t it
proves that the selools must, to be s sustained,
become thoroughly godless."
Such are the. views of these leading
organs of the ROmaliCatholic Church
in the United States, and they ii4no
doubt in exact accordance with the
views of the Catholic Church of the
country.
These strongly marked utterances
on the subject, (saywthe Buffalo

Catholic journals, seem intended to
be understood as the declarfd open
ing of. a general, concerted.attack on
the public school system of this coun
try, more determined than any
against which it has heretofore re
quired to be defended: .Noting the
signs of a bitter political conflict over
this question approaching, we desire
that the people may be so warned,
that they shall not suffer surprise in
it, nor betrayal at the hands of traf
ficking politicians.
air An interesting and singular rail
road trial 'came to a conclusion in the
Circuit Court at Albany last Week. It
was the case of John H. Wells against
the Rensselaer and Saratoga Railroad
Company. It appeared at the trial
that the plaintiff was standing at a
station of the Company near the Rail
road Cometry, near Troy, when a
train came along, which did not stop.
The baggage man on the cars was in
the habit of throwing off as the train
passed, a large piece of ice for parties
there. On one occasion the ice thrown
struck. Mr. Wells on the leg; knocked
him down, andinjured his spine so
that he was maimed fur life. One of
his legs contracted so that it became
several inches shorter than the other,
and his whole nervous system was
shattered. For-this injury he prOse
ented the railroad. company, and at
the end the jury gave him a verdict
of $.5,500. The case was sharply
contest••d by able rl.nnsel on both
sides.

LETTER FROM MR. VATIGHAIf.
ala.\ rl ,
crroa:—l feel called upon
to corrkt some false statements that
have. appyared in your paper—wheth
er made intentionally or not I will
leave others to judge.
1. You repeat it again that I -ems
defeated in mi„ own town for dele
gates. That is \ false,l as every, man
that was at the: delegate meeting
knows that there was i mot a word said
as to the Representative or Treasur
er—all the difference was who should ,
represent us in the Convention, D. L.
States was rather suspicious of L P.
Stafford for the course he had taken
heretofore, so he -asked hik, if elect
ed, he would represent the in the
Convention e ---he said he 'Would of
course. I should like to know who
was your informant if you have \ anv,
that said I was defeated at home in
the delegates ?
2. Mr. Editor, you have put
down as a Democrat, because rap
name was on the Democratic tickets,
but it was not put • there at my, re
quest, which was not the case with
most of the other Republican candi
dates. Mr Chamberlain's name wis )
on Democratic tickets, and I think he
.received as Many or more Democrat
ic votes in our town thanldid. The
Democrats objected. to vote for
artiest because I have, always been au iest
Republican, which objection they had
not to Chamberlain.
Now, Mr. Editor I have no aspire
tionsior political popularity, but I
do feel as any true Republican ought
to, to call the attention of the Repub
licans.of our county, to the course
certain politicians have taken in nom=
inating . officers. You know as well
as I do, and every other man that
has paid any attention to countypol
itics, that the nominations have been
made for a number of years past , for
at least six months in advance of the
Convention. A few wire-pullers that
style themselves the people, get to
gether and Beset the candidate., -to
be supported that fall, and make
promisas -for two or three years .in
advance to others, if they, will secure
those nominations; and the man that
opposes them isAloomed.
