of such a household were well deserv

4inosphere,the most energetic would
feel a lethargy creep over the spirits,
effectually checking all advancement.
,Would you like to know the secret
of such thriftlessness ? It was a whis

FALL 31ANUBINtk COBH LAND.—I
drew a large portion of my barn-yard
manure, which had been piled in the
yard through the summer, on a do
ver
and timothy sod whicl;was plant
ed this season. The manure was
thrown in piles from the wagon, and
in November I had it spread over the
sod. It kw thus until the - usual time
(May,) for plowing for corn,&c., this
last spring. The effect of the inanute
was very marked on The cropi grown
during the past season on the field.
These were corn, potatoes and peens.
Not having enough manure to cover
the entire field, it was placed on the
poorer portions. Bvery load of ma
nure made its mark on the crops, to
an extent far exceeding any effect
from plowing under coarse manure
in the spring which I (.7CI: saw. The
seed germinated quick, the plants
grew with vigor, and the crop matur
ed early. This ex; -J.iment satisfied
me that more benelit, is derived from
manure applied in the fall to sod
ground which is to i b e e planted the
following year, than t plow under au
equivalent amount sh from the
yard in the spring.
Le us consider the phiimoi by of
this effect briefly. Manure •spread
on the.ground so late in the season
as November loses nothing by de
composition. The cold prevents that
from taking place. But the moisture
of winter and spring dissolves the
soluble elements of the manure, and
carries them into the soil. These ele
ments are arrested . and retained
mostly, and probably wholly by the
first six inches of top soil. When
the seed is phuited it finds, in its
first growth, food in the precise con
dition it demands. It need not wait
till midsummer, as would be the
ease with fresh manure, for it to de
compose and become available.—
Hence the "croli . starts early and
vigorously, eseapes the effect of that
summer drouth, and matures in good
time. Steep side-hills' from which
manure would be washed, might be
exception to economy of this method
of manuring; but in most cases farm
ers will find a great profit in drawing
and spreading as much manure as
possible on their plantinggrounds in
the fall.—Pems Tow., m Rural New
Yorker.
Cows Yotra Vn AND Purrs.—
Me advice cannot be too often given
t o all who cultivate vines and pknts,
as to their protection through the
winter and early spring. We•have
found, after a good many years expe
rience, that there is no mode so sure
of gmtrding all vines and plants not
entirely hardy against our matern
ally severe winters, as laying them
down and covering them with soil. Of
course we mean those which san be
so treated. The covering should not
be more than two to four inches, ac
cording to the nature, of the thing
-laid down. If too much earth is used,
the buda, from the heat of the ground
in March may burst too early, and
may be damaged by a late s frost when
taken up, which should' rarely be
done before the first -of April. All
young Grape vines should be laid
down, though it will prove of great
benefit, in our judgement, to all
grape-vines, young and old, hardy
and otherwise, to prune them and
lay them• down and cover with a few
inches of soil.- All Raspberry canes
should be pruned and laid down; so
shoulditoses that are liable to dam
age from the frost . Stravringup roses
and other decidous flowers and aka
bery, as it is usually done—that is
hin.ding them ,as tightly almost as a
pole—is far - more injurious to them
than no protection: at all. Where
drawing up is resorted to it should
be applied only ,on the side-exposed to
the sun. '
• . All flOwer-horders should have a
