A freer use of the ': Ml*l4 . oll
table would ,ctuilde farmers set
with more - precision - in inailynpnee
tions now conducted' lealarely- by
guesswork. We have - frequent in
quiries, for example, as to the proper
amount, of manures to be , applied per
acre for different crops;
. but the use
being ne,w, - ,the eprtheation is made
without any guide as to . the quantity,
any too much is need in one case and
too.little in another. One man in
jures his crops and waste the materi
al by overdosing: another uses too
little, and does not witness any seri
sible•effect, A little figuring would
()bride these difficulties, and enable
the farmetto ealadatn accurately be
forehandjust tow much to apply.
Suppose, for instance, that he propo
ses to use superphosphate at the rate
of 500' pounds per acre in his turnip
drill. Instead of trying at random,
and coming out wrong, as he will be
sure to do, let him bring his work
down, to figures, in the , following
manner. His drills, we will suppose,
are twenty-eight inches aparkamount
ing to 1120 rods in length on each
aere,or at the rate of about seven oun
ces, per rod. Or,to be more accurate,
as well as to-take a more convenient
lenith, the fertilizer should be strew
ed Slang the farrow at the rate of
one ounce to two feet and two inches
in length. Weigh out a small quan
tity in ounce portions, and practice
a few minutes by strewing it slang a
furrow so that each ounce shall reach
a Measured length of two feet and
two inches. A little practice will
- enable the operator to apply the fer
tilizer so that he can distribrite the
required quantity over the acre or
field, with much accuracy. If he
wishes to use only half this quantity,
or two hundred and fifty pounds per
acre, strew it so that an ounce shall
extend four feet four inches, and he
grill accomplish the desired purpose.
• If a fertilizer is to be Applied in
hills,as in a corn-field, a similar mode
of calculation may be readily adopted.
Hills three feet and a half apart each
way, will be at the rate of about 3500
per acre, requiring aleiut two ounces
per hill, if 500 pounds of the fetilizer
are used,or one ounce for 250 pounds.
The same mode may be used to
determine the amount of grass seed
for each handful in sowing broadcast.'
Each threw will cover, as before,
from five to ten feet, and whatever
• quantity is used for an acre should,
therefore, be divided into about a
thousand parts. A peck of clover
seed, for example, weighs fifteen
peunes, and to cover an-acre, each'
handful should be a little less than
the fourth of an ounce. The previous
use of a pair of:genies for 'Weighing
off a few of these !,:ntionsgwould
enable the operator to hit at once,,
• with considerable :t• ...iracy, the right
quantity, instead
cenipelled
to make random s:es for days, of
even years, bef•ire :/cquiring proper
e xperience.
It is often re,:fir• 1:s1 as au indica
tion of shrewd •tue,..lng when the
farmer brings, hi s domestic :a inuds
through the winter on the exact sup
ply of fodder which he has stored
away for that purpose. Sometimes
he may find towards spring, that he
has many tons of surplus, and per- 1
haps, more frequently, that'he has to
purchase a considerable amount, in
, order to "piece out" the winter sup
ply. Measuring, weighing and calcu
lating,R the work of .s few minutes,
will obviate much of this tqeertainty.
The farmer who frequently weighs' a
load . of hay, acquires sufficient expe
rience in estimating, to determine,
very nearly, from a record of the size
and number of the loads which he
draws into the bereethe *hole amount
e-7 , ich he has on hand for the winter.
If he has neglected to do this, may
with the amount nearly as well by
measuring his bays, and allowing an
lINCIItgrO of 500 cubic feet per ton of
timothy, 600 feet if part clover. He
will thus be able tolearn, very nearly,
how much hay he has on hand. , The
next question is to know heir Much
hi s animals will eat. If he has pro
- vided good racks, to; prevent them
treading hay under loot,. and has
giver' them fair shelter,-he may adopt
the following rule withu good deal of
certainty: Determine ;the weight 011
his animals, and allow three per cent,
of the weight of his horses for their
daily food - in hay, end two arid a half
per cent. for cattle. Multiply 'this
daily Allowance by the whole um
ber of animals;• and again by the
number of days which he expects to
give them dry food, and then to com
pare iwith the quantity on hand, and
he may strike the balance, cinema) ,
or the other, with considerable cer
tainty.
Every farmer should have a tape
line or other means for measuring
his fields. If he hue much experience
in pacing, ho may indeed make tem
porary measurements with some de
gree of accuracy, butrie should Ire
` quently correct such rough work with
the tape line. Every field should be
• measured, so that the owner may
know the number of acres, ~ aid a
record should also be nuide of its
.length and breadth, that the amount
of land ploughed ins day may be
readily reckoned, and the contents of 'I
each "land" definitely known.--
Among other advantages, this accura
cy will enable the owner to determine
easily acreable predicts under difier
ent modes of management, and to ac
quire a great deal of valuable inform
ation in a few years as to the most
profitable way. of raising heavy crops.
There we many other modes, which
will suggest themselves to the intelli
gent farmer, for adopting the weigh
ing and measuring system, and lab
inittiw, his work to accurate figures,
instead. of to loose and random
guessing.' Every granary should
have a graduated scale inside, to show
at a glance the number of bushels at
any height. A, similar measurement
and record should be made of his
wagon boxes; - These he may do by
•
measuring' the length, depth and
breadth for the cubic feet. - Then
- divide the nutither of cubic feet by
56, and multiply by 45, and theiet
will lie struck meainire. Or, her may
allow 2,150 cubic Inches for' each
briskel, eirAdd one-fourth ihr heaped
measure, as for potatoes, corn in the
ear, ite.-eeCouniry Gentleman. • •
