Wintering Beee—A Whitening Hone,
Some , propose. wintering'ion their
summer stands; some medlars; and
some say bury in the snow, or in the
sand, or in a clamp; while others say,
build a hOnse above ground erpTesti
ly for the purpose, All may be right,
and doubtless in the special lo
asa the climati3 %ries much, in the
territory over which the Journal cir
culates.. This may, in some meta's-
tire, account for the different opinions
expressed. I have tried nearly - all
the plans f above 'enumerated, and
have found . serious objections to
. nearly all of Them. This winter I
propose to winter' my bees in a re
pository above ground, built on pur
pose. My objection to cellars is,they
are frequently too damp, and it is
difficult tp move the hives down and
up; and ;the bees_ are liable to. be
disturbed frequenty by . persons go
ing down for potatoes, apples, dm, ,I
have tried wintering in a clamp or
pit. I find that, in that way, the
I.w.s eat less, but the combs come out
m-fruldy, and sometimes worthlese.—
Wiatermg on the summer sten& re
quires more honey, nearly tido° as
much, as the bees are roused tone
tivity every fine day; and a . great
many are lost, in the . snow, while
many others are frozen .stiff in the
'during- long continued cold
weather. Besides being hazardous,
it looks careless, to winter thus.
The house I-am building is 12
feet by 14i; sills raised on -posts
inches from the - ground. The lower
loists are 2by 10, inches, and run
engthwise. The centre ones are One
inch lower than the sills. A rough
• floor is laid on the under side,..then
fill with saw-dust to top of the joists.
I have a double inch floor on the top.
The-floor is cut in two in the centre
and the two parts do not meet 1#
one inch, which opening will answer
the doable purpcse of winter ventila
tiou and as a vent to let water off
from snow that I intend to,pile in to
ward.; spring,(in a small hall, to be
left in the centre) in order to loWer
the temperature when the cold be
gins to moderate.
The frame is put np with 2 by 10
scantling, weather boarded and bat
tened on the outside, and lined on
the inside. The hollow wall all filled
up with saw-dust. The joists above
are 2 by 8, lined on the under side,,
and eight inches of saw-dust laid on
top, through which an upward vetf
lator passes, reaching from the ceil
ing up through the roof of the house,
and-having at the bottom a regulat
ing valve. [have a -small window in
• one end, with glass, and also blinds
on the inside and outside; a double
door, one each side 'of a frame, and
in the winter a straw mattress will
be placed between the doors.
Now,if any-of my friends e-an-sug
gest any improvement on the above
plan, I would feel obliged.
I propose, in sminaer, to use the
house for working my honey ma
chine in; or for storing honey or any
other work conueehd with bees, in
summer. I have sev: - .lty swarms,
undone hundred - can be store:: away
in this - house, in Thomas' hive, (and
by the way that is the best hive, and
is all the go in Canada.) •
With us, the past season will,
prove to be the pooreit we have had
r•for some time. It has been just the
reverse of last summer—that is, too
wet and cold. I-.fear very little ear
-plus honey will be obtained. A. C.

3..)0f is of Vermont slate. I drive in
to three stories—a basement for
- unwires, a stable for animals, and a
~.tory above this for hay, while the
grain. is pitched from this into the
loft or "scaffold" above, from whose
floor tho roof rises steep to a height
of sixteen to eighteen feet. There
should have been more windows for
sight and air; but my barn is con
venient, impervious to frost, and I
Jim confident that cattle are wintered
at a fourth less cost than when they
shiver in board, shanties, with cracks

pelting, chilling storms, and to in

is Still a novelty, and was far more
so ten years ago, When I built my

orchard every week; sometimes twice
or thrice, and each time my eye dis
covers one or more cocoon or masses
of 'insect lave attached to the limbs,
or laid up carefully in some crotch of
a limb. It is stragne what' a multi
plicity of insects there are ; and to me
still more strange that I can't see
them all one time. It is a part in fruit
growing that lulows no finish.
I always carry my knife, or hand
shears along also; for almost each
time,-looldng from tree to tree, dis
