Kind Training of Colts sad Homes, • Oentlemen : There is one subject to which I would like to direct the attention of the readers of the Jouo - of the Farm, and that is the early training of homes, so as to render them safe for all purpose& It is not, as many suppose, &difficult thing to train horses, so that they . 'shall be perfectly tractable under almost any circumstances. The horse is an intelligent animal, :--one that, above , almost any other, appreciates kindness and gentleness on the part of those that have charge.. of him. He can readily be taught to understand what is "expected of him, unless those expectations are of an unreasonable character ; and once comprehending what the master's wishes are, appears to be ambitious to meet them. But let it not.be for gotten that this willingness on the: part of the animal to semis coupled; with Lindness on the part of the master. . • • It is . a great matter to inspire a horse with confidence in his trainer. If he shies at an object, the trainer should first soothe him by kind and encouraging words and gentle pat t lugs, and not endeavor to cure the animal's fears by blows and loud and :n!gry invectives. The object - . of alarm should then be approached cautiously, and be touched for him died by the driver. This will serve to assure the horse that his alarm ~ vas groundless, and it will be sur pr:sing if ever there is a repetition of the shying from that particular ob-, i,.ct. Again, colts should bo early train el to the use of the bit, and to the wearing of harness. By putting a ',it in their mouth occasionally, and exercising a gentle use of the reins, they soon begin to comprehend the object ; i and by the time they are old cil(\ugh to be put to work, it will be f oind that one of - the greatest diffi t'olties in the way of breaking a colt obviated. Putting a saddle on a colt's back, and occasionally harness ink him up, even to the tightening of the girths and the plating on of flic - eollar, should he practiced. Thus, in a variety of ways, the young colt r•!in be taught docile habits, and be thus rendered doubly valuable to his cov, ier. I am a great stickler for kindness t. i• animals. In early life my Sent the other way, but experience satisfied me full}-,that nine-tenths ~f the mishaps which occur to torses alld their drivers are ,dne to the tm ldndness with which the animals are ti...ited. Occasionally, a horse is met wiL,se temper is so bad that it would almost impossible to render litei tractable, but such vicious beasts are rare. . I need not s:ly to your readers, how mach more valuable iu the market a w. , 11-educated horse is, than the 1m i.nly and almost unmanageable ones, vshivh are so frequently met with. .y always bring better price, and tliey are really more valuable. It is a great error to suppose, as many do, that a docile horse is necessarily .0. - anting in spirit. - Nothing could be further from the truth than this. The it spirited horses I have ever seen w,•re those which were hest educated, and which needed neither whip nor threats to urge them to adopt any t'a'•e of which they are capable. Lancaster Co., Pa. J. RINOWALT. Bad Luck This general term for bad manage hi it should be abolished ; there no such thing as bad luck in ti,.• sense in which it is used. There accidents which no common good •,: ,:•&• could prevent, but there are few attending crops, live stock, or the .1;•-,posal of the same, which cannot 1 ! easily traced to bad management. For instance, a field of corn turns out' had in quality and light in quanti ty that the owner says he has "had -:llocking bad luck with it this year ;" Ina on inquiry it will be found that lie was at work be might have done :,oath earlier, when he ought to have planted it ; that his manure was raw, hiving been taken from a heap xyllichtliad never been turned over, •tild other people's corn was up and I , ••„lking well when his was put in the ground. His cows have been miscarrying, and those having me their full time give little milk, -;.) that he has had very "bad luck " Nv ill them too • it will be found on estigation that these poor animals 11 yed on mouldy cornstalks the. first p.irt of the winter, chopped up and \VL'e, so that they could not pick out any which happened to be not quite had as the rest ; then, just as abor t i in commenced, some hay was given to them, which was full of weeds—all of it, timothy, clover and weeds, seed ; the clover'quite black, and the s; ems of all crackling like brushwood when moved about. Bushels of seed were !mocked out in haymaking, many more bushels scattered about in loading and unloading, while the rest sheds out and mixes with the few leavesleft to rub off the stems, in be ing forked over from the mow to the !hangers.
