The Care of Harness Perhaps hOthing on`a farm better repays the .e. 43 bestowed on it thah harness • fe*!"- things go .130 quickly" to thesb;il froth neglect. - - Now if , the - bare rtiansidtiratian of economy (for the artieleirr.queatiOn is costly,) ewe add a little* for appear-, ante-sake nicely • kept harness: something for the comfort of the 4111 - Innis working. tten-fittii4, flexible leather, and, what 70 . etruttpleatie for the safety to ,life andlinili of the owner. and beast, we teed not apolo °ire for asking .attention to this sub= pet as.important • Harness ought to be washed about once a' month with sponge and Cas tile soap—one strap at a time—and the soap removed' by a clear-water sponge as soon: as the surftiee is cleansed. Twice-si year it shOidd be oiled, or oftener if ranch used and frequently wet and dry. Unless you can obtain perfectly pine nest's foot oil, (such as Peter Coojoef's,)make it yourself. Take the feet of beef,.erriah the hones• well with a sledge. or ale, and boil them in a large pot of water for 12 hours. Make two quarts of tallow from fried beef or mutton suet, and pour it into a four-quart can .(which should have a lid 'to keep out mice) and place it on the stove. Add:a lump of pure yellow wax as large as a hen's ernstirring as it melts. Then fill up the can with neat's foot/oil, and, removing it from the fire; con 7 tinue to, stir until the intermiXture is thoroughly complete. This, when cold:will be about "the saine consis tence as hog's lard. - Beep in the can. a bit of sponge always:ready for use. It ought tole whenit first goes into the grease, asp it will remain more flexible always afterwards than greas ed when dry. Leather which has beconie drytmd. horny through long neglect, will re ceive no benefit from grease applied to it in its dry and hard condition. You must only have grease' of the right sort, but must know hOw to use it. First, then, take the harness apart wherever it can be unbuckled. If hird, soak it in clear water(not warm er thrill milk freshly drawn)for serer al . hours. Then wash the piece as di rected with Castile soap, and work them in the hands until they are soft and.pliant; and if in very bad condi tion, this will require care and pa tience. A white crust like stearine will be -left on the snrface when the leather is dry, which can be removed with a dry coarse cloth. For common work harness nothing more will be needed, but carriage harness may be again washed with a sponge, and wiped with a dry chamois skin. Boots and shoes, of cow hide, kip or calf-skin, ought to be treated in the same way several times a yea?. If the surface is washed • with Castile soap, they will take a superior polish after the second brushing. The da!r l rer of such a result we think smell. The process of exhanstiOn would certainly be slower than where hay or grain are largely sold. On many dairy farms grain and - hay-are purquised each year, and fed to the cow. in addition to that raised on the farms. There is one waste, comparatively s which might be avoided. In many eases where cheese is made at faotories the whey is lost to the farmers. We see no good reason why it should not be taken back and fed to hogs on the .farm.' We think it could be fed more profitably than is ordinarily the case at factories. We also believe it would be better for dairymen to raise their cows rather than buy them ; better cows could thus be secured, andiaordintni lv at less rates. With a careful apPlieation of the largo quantities of manure made on dairy farms, and the additional pre cautions of. feeding whey to them, and raising calves insted of bnying cows; we should expect such farms to improve in condition and fertility, rather than to see thenrietrograde.— ll'i., , ,fra Rural. FALL PLANTING or GrS.-- Within past two years we have watched experiments made by several gentlemen* in planting aspargus in Augnst, and the result is a remarkable success. The ground is prepared as for the crop at any other season, and, after cutting.off the green tops of the young seedlings, the roots are set precisely as in sprino• ° planting. They push new roots at once, and make eyes so strong that even froni one year-old seedlings some asparagus— hut not, of course, very strong—has been cut the following spring • and when two-year roots.bave been Used a full crop has been cut at the same time--a result no one . expects from spring planting. In this region the plan has taken strong t , c , hold of,, p arden- (Ts, and asparagus planting is likely to take rank at once with strawberry as a regular August operation. It will, of suurse, be best in such cases to corer the beds, after they have once become frozen, with some kind of litter ; not to keep out frost, but to prevent thawing and fro - dzing until the natural spring season comes, Of the plants may be thrown ont— Gardcncr's Monthly. Coy; LLAEINCI HEn liax.—A sub scriber asks : " What will prevent a cow from 'leaking her milk ?" We have seen it prevented by plac ing an India rubber ring around the teat after milking. Anaher remedy common with some dairymen is to milk snch cows three times a day until the muscles of the teats gain sufficient , strength .to hold the milk from • morning until evening. 'An- other successful and simple .wayis to apply n sMantity of collodion to the end of the teat immediately after milking. This forms at once a thin, tough membrane or skin-which will prevent leakage, and hi easily mmom ed before milking.
