1111. The following tribute- to, the
memory of Mr. H. S. MISCI3II, from thii lea of
one who knew him well, we, end in the Scran
ton Daily _Republican :
Ocirrvanir.—The eery sudden death of B. fi.
Mama at Pittston, on Saturday last, has -sad
dened the hearts of sD in the community where
he died. Deaths are often sudden, but seldom
so sudden as his. Death is the occurrence of
every day, but seldom strikes down one whose
absence will be more generally felt and 'deeply
mourned in every community wherever known.
Of this great affliction at home, on the hillside,
where bleed the hearts of those who loved him
as only an ever devoted wife and, children can
love a fond and inestimable husband and fath
er, we dare not speak; we know the gushing
fountain of tears flowing there ;;•4,0 magnify their
loss we would not ; and we know oar praise of
him would be faint in the, light. of memories
which cluster around their hearts. God shield
them in this hour of their great tribulation ; and
for them, penetrate the cloud with the smishine
of hope and faith.
The residence and home of Mr. H. 8.
alas
cos was at Towanda. It was there he Ingham,
and passed most of hi. life. A few years since
he engaged with a brother in coal business at
Pittston, still retaining his residence at Tosran-*
da. His strict integrity, his habits of industry,
his rectitude in all his badness relations, com
bined with a frank and genial disposition, made
him a &Torii° at Pittston; grmtly 'respected
as ho was in Towanda, he was not less go among
those where be was stricken down.
Rare as we think the manhood qualities of
Mr. Minima were ; estimable as be was in his
sphere of life ; yet so unobtrusive was he that
the circle of his influence wanlimited. Without
ostentation, be soon impressed others with the
fidelity of his character. It was his fortune to
gain Mends without an effort, and retain them
as easily. He was eminently a practical man,
in religion, in politics, and business; he identi
fied belief and action in allying, practical union,
and although earmist in his convictions, hold
ing them with tenacity, he ever expressed them
in s way that gained - tor him the respect of
those who differed with him.
We regard the death of inch s uis serious
loss to the community, not becanie lie was con
spicuous in it, or attempted a display of his vir
tues, but because they eonstantlyradiatfrom
his example and character, an influence fin
prelusing itself for good on all with whom he
came in contact. The mission of life Is largely
fulfilled when &mirth.. cradle to the grave a
foot-path is made inviting us to tread therein
if we would reach the goil of a life well spent.
CANTON.-Mr. Editor: If you wish

- Once our farmers used a straight Stick rand a
scythe to cut their grass; but • a rerolution has
taken place, and they use the mower; as great
a revolution is now taking plaeo, as Wheeler

farmers will use no other alter they omit work.
A short time since, Crum= A.-Kerartr, of
Leßoy, found upon rising in the morning, that
$144 had either been loft or stolen from his
pockets. A haystack which be assisted in mak
ing the previous day was nearly torn down, and
a negro who slept in an adjoining room search
ed, but the money was not found. Finally, the
negro was arrested, taken bairn, a :notice of
tha peace, and held to bail for the sum of 1500.
Our professional friend and others hearing the
evidence, do not know why he was bisind over,
unless it is because "I dined ono in my camp
