How to :Have Good Meadows.
.)fr. N. Platt,..of; Bradford county
a letter to the Amerimn In
init.() Farmer's Club, gives his ex
perience as follows : My land is
adapted to all kinds of grain and to
tinlothy grass and red cloven_ • My
practice is, when tßow a piece to
not to plow it in again in
li•ss than eight years, and I fre
'wildly let it lie a much lotion' time.
have a meadow now whiclihasbeen
;aimed for sixteen successive years,
and it nos never better than now. In
fart my meadows tinder the right
treatment grow better as they grow
older. I do it by returning •to a
meadow allpe manure the hay blade
that was taken from it, and sowing a
bushel of gypsum per acre each year.,
In that way the yield of gram is
hi.iavier and finer and richer-as the
soil thickens. I use manure only for
top-dressing the- meadows ; in that
way I get double price for it. It
produces.a.s much worth of grass as
it would in ~r ain, and also produces
itself in al turf. My turf, when
ready for plowing 'under, is a solid
lusty of grass roots twelve inches
deep or more, and so thick on the top
that no soil can be--stsin. I consider
iine such turf, when turned under,
equal to 160 tons of first-class' barn
yard manure per acre.
Land so often, plowed to grain
the all gives - up to , the grain
bone, beof, tallow there is in it ;
consequantly the grass, crop is so
• (11.z:tante of nutriment that farm
stock will not thrive well upon i
without grain a portion of the season.
It - furnishes a plenty of skin and rib
as the cattle are witnesses, but the
flesh is _minus. Grass grown upon
land kept in the right kind of order
for grass will keep stock in first rate
order at all seasons of the year. I
have seen it tried •in both ways, and
know whereof t speak. Raising grain
on a piece of 'ground, three seasons
to two of grass, enriches it in the
same ratio that paying $3 for ,$2
would-enrich a man. lake produces
like in grass us in bleeding, conse
-tinently manure 'made of good hay is
best for meadows: It stands to rea
holl fur meadows to grass better than
when their own production is honest-.

writers on; agriculture - have incomes
from other sources beriicle their farm,
and can follow any system-of rotation
and have plenty of time and leisure.
But tho man who begins at the foot

of his farm, all his stock and tools, •

stumps, walls it in, enriches it and
puts on the buildings, and raises a

David A. Hawn - of Stark, ear York,is
in the habit of turning out his calves
as soon as the clover is large enough
for a good bite, and he leaves theta
there , without anything else, except
salt, ,what they want, and water, till

them with the cows till -the clover

which is in a few weeks, and there
