We are pleased to learn that Mr. JOSEPH KINOSBEEY will still continue to act as Assistant in the office. 6. On Thursday last, wo took a" short ride over the hills to Smithfield, and were agreeably surprised to witness the many beau tiful farms and neat looking buildings along the route. One of the first places to attract our at tention was that of Messrs. DEuKco and Hine Leo:, the present (miners of the farm for many years occupied by Deacon JAMES Dusan', just outside the borough lines. The place has been equally divided, and either half would now bring two or three times as much as the whole sold-for ten years ago. We were particularly struck with the thrifty appearance of Mr.-DELasn's gardens. It does not seem possible that garden vegeta bles can be so far advanced in this latitlide so early in the season. We doubt if there is anoth er gardener in the county who can (sign] Mr. D., and we have no doubt that his twenty acres pays him better than many farms of one hundred acres worked by nnskilfnl men. All the farms north of Mr. DELONO'I4, on the Waverly road in North Towanda, give evidence of thrift and industry on the part of the owners. W. H. Foerrgn, fs.uc 3lTrar, E. H. Horrro,s, C. Dhows, and S. A. and CEO. D. Miti-s,'have improved their Prperties very materially within the past few yvails, hy erecting new buildings, repairing old onei, removing stumps, putting op neat and substantial fences, lc., thus making their homes attractive and the tilling of the lioil remunerative. . On the trip Wu observed many other farms equally worthy of notice, but did not learn the names Of owners. There has undoubtedly been a marked advancement' undo by farmers throughout the county in the art of agriculture, and we shall be pleased to receive from friends in any Kellett of Bradford notices .of such im provements. • CAUTIONS AND WAIININGS FOR FOURTH op Rl:V.—The aniaersary of our National In deiwndence is about hi return, and - its obser vance will be attended by the usual incidents and accidents of the day. It is a day fraught with danger to hundreds of thousands in our land. Thousands will celebrate it as a free, en lightened and Christian people should; but thousands upon thousands will, by drunken rev dry and dissipation, disgrace themselves, their families and nation ; and will, too plainly, demon strate their unfitness for self-governmenL There will be murders committed through excitement caused by the Infetimt Demon, King Alcohol. Husbands will abuse their wives and children ; young men will make beasts of themselves ; lads, who are the pride, hope and joy of loving friends, will take, perhaps, their first idep towards a drunkard's grave ; horses; made wild and un governable by drunken, rowdy drivers, will run away—carriages and wagons smashed—bones broken, and riders otherwise injured.. There will be deaths and mutilations caused by caro less and ignorant handling of firearms and pow der. Buildings of all kinds will be burned by the careless use of fireworks, and by thomd pests and nuisances—fin , crackers. In view of all these things, we would, with the hope of averting some of thebefore-named utter the following - eautions To ON Men :—Disgrace not your years and gray hairs by indulging in liquor. • Net such an example of sobriety before our youth and before your own children as you would wish to have them imitate. To.. Young .Ven :—Honor your manhood and country by total abstinence from all intoxicating drinks, andthy temperance in all things. 7b Maidens :—Refuse the attentions of young men who indulge in strong drink ; and, by no means, accept the invitation of such to attend any Fourth of July ball or party. To our Noble , Boys and Girls :—"As you hope to enjoy happiness in this life—saying nothing of that which is to come—if you would'desire to be respected in the world, we would- earnestly nrge r yon to firmly adopt the tido of total ab stinence. "Touch not, taste not, handle not :" let this be your motto forever. " Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging : and whosoever is deemed thereby is not wise." " Who bath wo? who hath sorrow? who bath contentions? who bath babbling? who bath wounds without cause? - who bath redness of eves ?, They that tarry long at the wino; they that go to seek mixed wine. Look not thou up on the wine when it is red, when it givoth its color in the cap, when , it moveth Itself might. At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingoth like an adder." 7b Brerybodm Old and Young r—De cautions to avoid accidents,--handle fire, Are-arms, fire works, Ac., with care. Keep sober. Do what you can to make others happy. Try to prove yourself - worthy of the blessings of a free and happy land. A few days since, a little girl was serious ly injured by it; report says the result has provediataL On the 18th, a festival was held in Leßoy for the benefit of the M.E. Church. Of course, we attended. The festival proved a success, for a large sum of money was raised. Do net remem ber the exact amount, because luck turned against us after this style : A large cake, in which a gold ring had been placed, was cut into thirty, three pieces. Upon being • informed that cuts could be drawn for 25 cents, we were soon taught that "success is certain" to those who succeed, as did young MAsos in this else. The M.E. Church in West Granville is nearly completed. It is ono of the neatest and most substantial in this Vicinity. In a trip of sixteen miles, from the borough line down the creek and over by the way of Alba, we counted twelve houses and eight barns in the process of erection. - True.. • - Canton, June 27, 1869. ON 1 Lou, 25 Bln.ta June 25, 1869 FuIEND Atvona : I have been spending a few days among " the logers" and lumbernien liv ing along Pine Creek in Lycomiog county.— Why is it that we sometimes hear these men called " the Wickedest men in the world?" I don't believe it. Lot as remember they lave ever had very limited religions advantages. Certain it is, these mon of the woods aro no idlers. Their rough hard work they do in right good earnest. Last winter they sent doWn to Williamsport logs enough to fence the entire State of Pennsylvania with a solid log fence two and a half logs high. Men Who can do that amount of work in one season ate not the worst men in the world. I have visited them at their homes. They are "blessed" with large families. The family where I stopped last night numbers, all told, nineteen sons and daughters. The family that lodged me the first night I came up has ten children ; the next, nine; another, just across the stream, has sixteen. The various forms of mite-natal murder, too prevalent, in some circles of fashionable society, are unknown in the Pine Woods. I say igain, these patriarchs of the forest aro not " sinners above all sinners." Some of the brightest OM- Ant, by nature, that I have ever sten 'are in these families of the' lumbermen. "Given to hospitality" they ilxmnd in in4Oic houses. I have never yet been charged a penny by any of them rot either bed or board. Less than two weeks ago, one of the hotels in Wil liamsport, not far from the depot, charged me one dollar for the privilege of sleeping on the hall floor from midnight until daylight. Their rooms were all occupied. Once more I repeat, there are men no bett4 than lumbermen. Gen erous and industrious, they are deficient most of all in their spiritual interests. With very little preaching - of any kind - , they aro now well supplied with Sunday &hoots of which you may hear More by and by. - The log is getting hard, and I must stop, or rather get up and go on. Yours ever, IL Currrr....xnts, S. S. Missionary P. R.-27th ins/mt.—Yesterday, Sunday, go ing :to my morning appointment on Callahan mountain, about half way up, I encountered an old mother bear. no withstood each other, face to face, about three minutes.
