Causes Ittike ping the Yield of Milk.
At a recent meeting of the Connec
ticut Board of Agriculture, what -the
subject of neat cattle was tmder dis
cussion, one farmer, a Mr. Weller,
tun4e sonic very pertinent remarks
in regard to the-managementef to lch,
cows. • He had - a dairy of - nineteen
cows, and he finds that it is: impor
tant to keep his stock where_they will
not be disturbed or excited. He
;gives an instance of the effect of any
unusual „noise in lessening the quanta
ty of milk, since it wasfound that the
noise from a threshing machine iliade
themlall off twenty quarts per day.
We have no doubt as to the trtithpf
this statement, since we have repeat
. edly observed -similar results, in the
yield of milk from cows disturbed by
any unusual noise.
Many farmers do not seem to un
derstand the fact that fear, or any
undue excitement of the tow, ltad a
powerful influence in lessening . the
quantity of,her milk, when the most
common observation should teach
that it is so. We have, seen men
used to stock all their lives, who un
derstan'd and practice milling every
day, who will not believe any such
influence, at least in their manage
ment of stock be taken as =index.
We have. often wondered why men
who are of a naturally saving dispo
sition, and . would be' shocked to see a
pint of milk spilled in the house;
simuld allow quarts and gallons to be
in their management of the herd
i n the stable, kicking cows with heavy
1. .t s, striking with stools; rind keep
ing the animals in a constant strain
(If nervous excitement and fear. .
We have no doubt that the quan
tlt V as well as the quality of milk is
i•lilueneed by under excitement and
Le.rvons agitation. Indeed, in more
t one instance have we found milk
badly injured on account of the ani
mal beinr , put in a fright, and we do
:lot see why y : any extreme agitation of
t:1,- cow should not at all -times have
Thom influence on the character of
Milk which she gives, especially if it
h,• drawn during or immediately af
t•T such nervous excitement.
Whatever vie7s.may betaken upon
que:tion, it must be- observed
that those persons who are so careful '
of their milk stock, 'keeping the anima

to believe that the fault A not so

making it an offence to be caught
adulterating milk _carried to the fac
tories. We need another law ; peaking_

(iI:EEN CROPS FOR Cows ANE HORSE'S.
The farmer whose pistures are so

not so with the. majority.. During
lmt days of summer the grass
and their beasts suffer for
ontrions foodAinless they have pro
vided a supply of sowey.Lcom, oats,
millet, or lucerne, which can be cut
daily and fed to Ithem in the stables.
Mitch cows which are fed abundantly
with this food will almost invariably.

taken from the pasture.
We have generally sown sugar
tin in drills for a soiling crop ; it
niaios excellent feed, and although it
vi'elds less in quantity, °it is more nn
tritons than common white or yellow.
.corn fodder. The Southern white
corn, however, is greatly prized as a
green crop, by many farmers, and-is
used almost exclusively in many parts
of the \State for that purpose. Many
o f our\readers report very favorably
in regard to millet ; a few have tried
lucerne, and like it ; others use oats
and Canada peas mixed, for soiling
cattle. All grow well on proper soil,
and we again remind oar readers that
it is wise to sow at least one of these
crops for summer fodder.
PUDDLING THE Room.--3.lauy of our
readers may have neglected to trans-
Oant a choke shrub or . tree, until it
semis to them to be too late fo iri the
season. They will find, however,tbat
the operation can be safely perform
ed if they will take up the Omits and
puddle the roots—that is, 'hip them
in mud made of about the cousisten
ev if thin mortar. :The puddle-hole
should be made ready before the
plants arc lifted, and the Foots should
be dipped in the mud before the sun
and air can have any effect upon
them. After the roots are coated
/with earth, they may b\! 'carried to
the place where they are to be plant
ed. Shrubs that have been heeled
in until the leaves have started may
be n dcly removed by using the pud
dle.
HAY should always be cut with all
its juices intact and before its seed is
ripe. To do this effectually, sweating
in cock is better than too much ex
posure to the hot sun ; and if the
weather is showery, cloth caps for
the cocks will sometimes , pay - for
themselves the first season, m the
-iptality of the hay
Stijuwberry beds will bear larger
fruit and hearer crops if kept moist
in dry weather. This may be effected
by regular and moderate irrigation,or
by copioT watering each evening,.
on a larger scale, nearly the same
result is attained by mulching well
between the rows with fine cat grass'
or soft straw 'chopped about. two
inches lung.

A Great Evil.
our race groans under the e
and carries burdens heavy .
borne. Some of these may be traced
back to the first sin, and are beyond
our control;but most of them are of
our own pr oducing, and may.be ar
rested by a resolute act of the will,
or by aids which come from other
sources.
Two evils now. AM the land' and
World which- are of .human invention,
and.are sustained by human author
ity.
r .
One of these is alcoholic drinks
and the other is tobacco. Of the
latter we wish to say a Jew words •
This has grown and overspreadfithe
nations of the earth till npw it chal
lenges ' observation, reflection, and
the exercise of enlightened consience
w,hile looking the facts in the face.
Such is? the present extent that five
and a half millions of acres aie•occu 7
' l pied in its growth, producing two
millions of tons annually and costing:
the human race ten thousand million's
of dollars ; by four more than enough
to pay the whole debt, in one year,
of the United States - and Great Brit
ain, startling as the fact may seem.
In our own country alone one hun
dred and fifty millions are expended
anually in its consumptifsn ; by far
more than is appropriated to support
the Gospel of Christ and the'cause of
education. How appaling such a
'State of things, while want and suffer
ing are all around .mri Multitudes
arc without the Bible, million have
never heard the name of Christ, and
.the most important enterprises for
promoting the_ welfare of mankind
falter and fall for the want of sap-;
port.
Yet thisenormous expenditure his
entirely useless. No one claims that
he is the better for the use of tobacco
in any form; plt is a mere habit, in
nocently formed, and while at first a
pleasure, has grown to be a master
and tyrant.
Not only this, but it is an offensive,
filthy habit, finding no plaCe• in the
church, in the parlor, the ladies'
saloon, or elsewhere, as a high order
of society meets and indulges in exer
cises which the higher nature craves.
Multitudes using it are ashamed of
the fruits of it, and would be glad to
be ridden of it if they knew how to
break the enchantment. But this is
not all, or even the worst of it• It is
injurious to health ; when taken to
excess operates as of a poisonous
nature, weakening the system and
leading to prematiu•e death.
Such evils, together with its enor
mods expenditan., ought to make
sober, reflecting. rom.ieritions men
consider Whether it can he right to
continue such a habit as this. Ought
it not be overcome at all hazard, and
thus promote health and cleanliness,
and save the funds thus uselessly
spent to provide for personal and
family wants and build up the cause
of truth and righteousness in the
world ? Erch IT%
TEMPER NcE.—Tliis :cardinal villue
can not be too highly estimated. 111
"is that due restraint upon the afThe
lions and passionw.which renders the
body tame and go,yernable, and frees
the . mind from the allurements of
vice. Not only should it be observed
in its popular sense, and the immod
erate use of ardent spirits be avoided
but we should be temperate in all
our relations in life. We should cid-
tivate an amiable 'dispositon, and
should not indulge to excess in any
thing, which, being good in itse
may become injurious by abuse. "Be
temperate in all things," is a good
mottoe which, we fear, is too often
overlooked. It is the 'duty of those
who preside'over the lodge to incul
cate this teaching not i bnly by words
appropriately spoken Lin the lodge
room, but by their eoiduct in the
world. Upon them devolves a sacred
duty lvhich cannot b slighted.
REIDIN6 rim FARM "S 130y8.-Am in-
telligent and thrifty farmer says':
"But for the co-operation of my boys
I should lifixe failed. I worked hard
and so did they. The eldest is near
twnty-one, and other boys 'in the
neighborhood, younger, have - left
their parents; mine have stuck to me
when I most weeded their service.
I attribute this result to the fact
that I have tried to make home plea-
sant for them.
I have furnished them with -attract
ive and useful reading; and, when
night comes, and the day's labor is
ended, instead of running with other
boys to the railway station and ad
joiting towns, they gather around
the great lamp, arid become absotbed
in- their books and papers." Such is
substantially the testimony of a farm
er who has known how hard the
struggle for n footing on free soil is
without a capital, and how valuable
and comparatively cheap are the aids
which good reading brings to him.
The London Christian Times, dis
coursing of the causes of poVerty in
Great Britain, lays most of the fear
ful amount of pauperism at the door
of . intemperance. After the payink
off of workmen on Saturdays, every
public house is full, and the demand
for gin, ale and brandy; is almost in
credible. "There they are spending
shilling after 'shilling, singing, quar
reling; bullying, swearing, !till the
wife,. who has been waiting all the
while in the hope to save- something
out of the wreck for the maintenance
of herself and children for the week,
at length leads her husband, helpless
and drunken, home."
_To such there
can be no escape from pauperism.
If you helli them to-day, they are as
bad off as ever to-morrow.
A DRUNKARD'S WlLL—heave to so
ciety a ruined character, a wretched
example, and memory that will
soon rot
I leave to my parents during the
rest of their natural lives as much
sorrow as humanity in a feeble and
decrpit state can sustain.
I leave to my brothers and sisters
rs much mortification as I could
bring upon them.
I leave to my wife . a broken heart,
a life of wretchedness aid shiime, to
weep over my premature death.,
I give and bequeath to each of my
children ignorance and low character
and the remembrance tha't their. frith
er was a brute.
WHEN Peter the Great heard any,
one speaking ill of another, ho would'
inquire, "Is there not wink side, also,
to the character of :the person of
whom you are speaking ? Come tell
me what good qualities you have re
marked about him." If, in speaking
of others, we should look alwaysat
the fair side, and see what good things
yqu can say of them, it would make
tiq feel better towards them ; it would
be doing them a service instead 'of nn
injury, it would tend to make peace
rather than awaken.strife.
