vened on Monday last. This session was called
for the purpose of disposin the McDun=

of a visit to our sister village Athens, I st week.
It is one of the oldest and most pleasantly lc.
cated towns in the State, and has many natural
advantages which Towanda is deprived of; but
for some reason its growth is slow. AThe rail
road does not seem to be of much advantage to
it. If more capital was invested in manufactur
ing establishments the place would compete
with any of the towns in Southern New York, at
it cannot be excelled as a , place of residence and
if there was business enough to warrant it would
soon be idled with enterprising, first-class busi-
nessmem
Through the politeness of Mr. C. T. lieu. and
the MeArs. Bioon, we were shown through
the extensive establishment of the latter gentle
men, which consists of several buildings well
filled with machinery of all kinds, for the manu
facture of agricultural implements, nail kegs,
and cast iron work of evei-y description, A large
force of men is employed, and business to the
amount of several hundred thousand deters
transacted every year. Their nail keg business
alone is immense, and is carried on upon
a large scale. The logs are sawed, elites and
heads cut out and put together, in most syste
matic and expeditions manner, and by the use
of the most improved machinery. They also put
up and thin a large quantity of these staves and
heads. They era now filling an order for a Har
risburg firm, of twelve hundred thousand staves,
Sawing, planing and mortising of all kinds is al
so executed to order. The citizens of Athena
arc greatly indebted is these gentlemen, for
their enterprising spirit, and we are glad to
know that their efforts are appreciated, and that
they have busing,' enough to crowd their shops
to their utmost capacity.,
Athens has several stores which would be
creditable to a more wide-a-wake town. Among
them are E. ll , Ennicx Ji.'s Drug Store, and
PARK and Krivszn's Dry Goods Stores. All these
appear to keep a full line of goods, of a better
nality than we generally look for in a loyrn of
such dimensions.
The First National Bank of Athens, is an in:
htitution, which should not he overlooked. Un
der the careful and judicions management •of
President HARBIN and Cashier Sr.u.nr.vo,lt has
attained the enviable reputation of being one of
the best regulated bankipg institutions in the
country. Wc.-regret that . a severe affliction of
the eyes at present conthies Capt. SPALDING to
his house, but his place is Well filled by Mr.

Among the new improvements which are now
in progress, is the fitting up of a neat and con ,
venjent room for the Post Office, just north of
the Exchange HoteL We congratulate Post
maste7r Herr on the change from the old office
- to the new.
Some of,the finest dwellings to be seen any-,
where in the country, grace the village of
Athens. The elegant mansion of Col. Wzraia i
just opposite the "Exchange" is nearly hidden
from view in front by shrubbery, giving the
place a very inviting and romantic appearance,
especially during the summer season, and af
fords a most delightful retreat for the Colonel
when ho requites rest froni, the active and ardu- .
(mai duties in which he delights, while projecting
and carrying out great improvements. Other
less pretentions,but really neat places attracted
our attention. Among thorn those of H. W. PAT
'act, Esq., F. N. Pao; Manor, Dr. Cou
nts, H. A. Em, and others, whose owners
names we did not learn.
The County Convention Lodge LO. of-0. T.'
held a session in that village on Wednesday and
Thursday, and we were heartily pleased to'no.:

Of the year. Among the delegates present were
those who would lend dignity and power to any
deliberative body. Q. W. C. T. Cain, presided
at the meeting, and addressed the citizens of
Athens on the subject of temperance, on Wed
nesday evening. Mr. C. is one of the ablest
men in the State, and hasbeen a life-long advo
cate of total abstinence. He is a gentleman of
urbane manners, pleasing address, quick per
ception, and deep thought. All the good that
he has accomplished will not be known until
that day when the i deeds of all men are made
manifest. Of the delegates from the County

ticlarly struck with the. character and appear
ance of the members of Athens LOdge. In ad
dition to the names of the delegates mentioned

and R. C. Stvainattoz, clearly proving that the
cause of temperance has the approval and sup
port of the best citizens of the place ; bat we
were surprised to see that while , nearly all the
members of the bar were interested in the good
cause,not one of the ministers of the gospel
there attended the meeting.
