ie. THE 81 - RD S.—These lovely war
blers, of the spring and summer, can now
perch upOn the lover branches, 'approach
the doors of our houses's and even dare to
peep in at the windows without fear of harm'
or molestation, as the Legislature has pass
ed a stringent law which fully protects their
brief life among the leaves and flowers.—
The cruelty of some men has heretofore
made the birds timid and induced them to
keep away at a safe distance from human
habitatiiirus, but now they can build their
nests under the eaves and feature to catch
a fly or two at the door sill and, if any one
harms them, assert their right to an action
of assault and battery. We live in a pro
gressire age. Civilization, in its most re
tined and Christian asinse,.is rapidly taking
the place of the old barbarism's practiced,
and there is a growing disposition to pro.
tect the weak against the Strong. Be it so.
Thus world is' full of beaofy, :and nothing

pir We noticed an incident on the
street the oilier day, which, although seem
ingly of little account., interested us. A
small boy was passing up the street, carry
ing in his hand a jug of molasses. Just as
he reached the stone pavement in fkint of
Mamma's Bank, he accidentally let the jug
fall, breaking it, and, of course, spilling the
molasses. The little fellow stood for a mo
m. nt looking at the broken vessel, and then
tamed away in great grief, as he had no
money to purchase another one and refill it;
at the same he feared to go home and tell
his mother of the accident. A kind-hearted
gentleman who bad witnessed the whole
performance, undertook the task of raining
funds sufficient to buy the lad a new jug and
fill it with molasses, which he accomplished
in a few moments, a number of gentlemen
who with him had observed the accident,
contributing, and in less time than it takes
to pen this the boy was again on ' his way
rejoicing. Our object in referring to this
event . is to call attention to the gross and
culpable negligence of parents in regard to
treatment of their children. It is too often
the case that a child is whipped, or is
kiwt as bad, scolded, for an accident which
was clearly unavoidable, whip a word .a
sympathy should be spoken to the unfortu
nate little one. And what is the result?
The child grows up Careless and indifferent,
and will employ every device and deceit to
screen itself whenever anything occurs
which will displease its parents: If pumas
.would but exercise common wisdom in the
management of their children, mildly re
proving their vicious and waprard habits,
and sympathizing with and ,encouniging
them when overtaken by accident, or any
of the little trials incident to childhood. we
should have lass bad boys and naughty
girls. Teach your children to be frank and
truthful in all things, by dealing with them
in a spirit of gentleness and kindness. Nev
a punish them simply because you are an;
gry, but when reproof and correction are
-necessary, let your bearing be 4
snoh that
they shall be made to feel that their pun
ishment is just and is administered in love.
• "Deal gentliWith their errors,
And lead them kindly on, - •
Until at length the guerdon
Of truth and peace is won.
The ineidept, also demonstrated the kind
nature of the gentleman who assisted the
boy, uhe was ,entirely unknown to him;
and his syMpathy was prompted by natural
goodness alone.

Dr. Wzrrox the President - t on taking the
chair Ma l ted the object of the meeting to be
the advancement of dental science, and
spoke of the mutual benefit arising from the
interchange of ideas to both Dentists and
their patrons and afterfelearly and forcibly
showing the, necessity of a higher standard
of dental requirements, he announced 'the
first subjectlor consideration, Ike preser

Dm. Witirrox, Hzu.r, &urn of Montrose,

Dr. N=lE:Li, explained his manner of
treating exposed nerves and aching teeth,
and stated that his success bad been very
gratifying, scores of teeth condemned to the
forceps by the patient are now doing good
service with the nerves alive and healthy:—
Diseases Of the gums attended with loosen-
Jim of the teeth received a share of consid
eration.
The subject of Mechanical Dentist was
then brought up and fully discussed.
The use of Aluminum as a base for aiti
ficial was highly commended by all. Dr.
Sierra spoke of the retrograding tendency
in the dental art, and this he attributed to
the cheapness sought after by the public
rather than good work with corresponding
prices. He denounced Rubber in the se
verest terms. It being - a non-conductor
keeps the delicate membranes which it Cov
ers at an unnatural temperature thereby
causing a spongy and unhealthy condition
of the gums, and also stated that the aver
age durability of rubber plitea. did not ex
ceed five mire, and that all-these objections
are fully overcome by the use of Aluminum.
Dr. Rama then offered the following :
It is a vegetable compound and liable to de
cay. When in the month the warmth, food,
acids and secretions with which it comes in
contact all hasten this change and the pores
of the material after a. time become filled
with matters detrimental to health. The
color is due to bi-sniphuret of mercury
which by aided the microicops may lie seen
