often -find twenty or thirty varieties
of grass on a square rod of ground.
There are seven to ten roots to each
square inch of original sod, and not
less than four or five different varW
ties of grass. In prootof this it may
be stated that there ire over three
hundred distinct varieties of grass
now growing in the Northern States,
east - of the lcuseissippi. Is. it -true
that there ere only two or three kinds
of this great variety valttable for
grazing ? Certainly not.. Our fore
fathers sowed four quarts of Tunothy
and four quarts of Red Clover to the
acre, and we follow the same rule.
It is stated above that there are from
seven to • ten roots on each square
inch of original sod ; there are six
and one-fourth million inches in , an
acre ; if Nature provides from seven
to ten roots to each square.inch, it
would give, for seven to the-inch,
about forty-four million seeds to the
acre, while in four quarts of Timothy
therk are six million eight- hundred
the s tutand seeds, and in four quarts of
Red -plover two million forty-eight
thousand seeds, making the total
number of seeds about nine million,
or about one•fifth of the amount which
Nature produces. 'What can the farm
ers expect from such seeding ?, Four
quarts of Timothy and four quirts bf
Red Clover make about fourteen
pounds per acre, when at least one
peck of each should be sow'', which
gives eighteen million seeds per acre.
Add to this one peck of Red Top on
lands the least moist, and twenty
million more of - seeds would result,
or altogether we would have thirty
eight million seeds to the acre

at TOMAT OES—How TO RIPEN THIN
EARLY.—First, have stoat, tapering
plants, by giving them • plenty .of
room, sunlight and air, from the com
mencement of growth. Then study
the habits of the plant, and you will
see that,from the main stem,it throws
out at intervals, long rough leaves ;
and at a later period, from above the
junction of these leaves with the
stem, start out secondary stems with
T 4 ' the tabits of the origional. These
continue to multiply themselves until
you have a large vote,T.'!itad plenty of
small green fruit, necessarily late in
ripening, for the reason that the
force of the plant has been spending
in producing vine.- Do nit wait thus
long and think to remedy the matter
by slashing off the vine at random
to let in sunlight, as is common prac
tice. • Begin with the plant in time,
and train it to suit you.
The time to begin trimming is jest
when the first cluster Of flower buds'
appear. This will generally be at
the junction of the further fifth leaf
mentioned.' At this time the secon
dary stems will be seen starting
above the junction of all the leaves
below Here begin your wark.—
• Pinch them all off at once, and when
they start out again, as they will,
pinch _off again until you conquer.
You have now stopped the making of
. vine below this cluster of flower buds,
and all the strength and juices of the
plant are sent upwards pushing for
ward the cluster of flowers and the
stems above. After a little, corn
mence your work above and pinch off
all these secondary stems, except
enough to leave five Or six clusters
of them. Your vine, so long as you
continue to pinch off these stdms,
is checked' both top and bottom.—
Keep it tied up to a strong stake,
and in due time your vine will be
almost completely hidden by a- mass
of ripe fruit, all in the sunlight.
By this pFocess I have not failed
for several !years having my first
ripe tomatoes the last of July, and
last year on the twenty-fourth. A
little observation and skill will sup
ply what further might be added, but
for making this paper too lengthy.

PREPARLTION OF WHITZWASII.-White
wash is one of the most valuable
articles in the world, when properly
applied. It not only prevenls the
decay of wood, but conduces greatly
to the healthiness of all buildbigs
whether of wood or,stone. Out build
ing and re'noes when not painted,
should be supplied once or twice a
year with a coat of whitewaih,which
should,be prepared in. the following
way : Take a clean water-tight bar
rel, or, other suitable cask,' and put
into it half a bushel of lime. Slake
4 by pouring water over ft, boiling
hot and a sufficient quantity to cover
it five incheli deep, and stir it briskly
till thoroughly slaked. When slak- '
ing has been thoroughly effected, dis
solve it in water and add,two lbs. of
sulphated' zinc and one Of common
Salt; this will cause the wash to hard
en and prevent its, cracking, which
giveit an unseemly appearance to the
work. If desirablb a beautiful cream
color may be communicated - to the .
above wash, by adding 'three pounds
of yellow ochre, or a- good pearl-lfr
lead color, by the addition d lamp
vine or, or ivory black. For fawn
color, add four pounds of umber,
Turkish or American, the latter is
the cheapest, and one pound of com
mon lamp-black. :This wash may be
appliedwith a common whitewash
brush,ind 'will be found much su
perior both in appearance and dura
bility to the common whitewash.—
