How To MAE= Bona.- The Boston
Cultivator tells how the best farmers
near Philadelphia get so, high a price
for - their butter :'
• "First they always make a first-claws
article, so their customers of
getting the best there is, w ill not de.
sert them tin account of ,ft raise in the
price. Second, they bring in their
butter in a showy. and attractive con
dition. No pot of - dell, wa re, no tab
or pail of oak or hemhick, no vulgar
-firkin is used to entomb those noble
balls, golden hued witli - lhp aroma of
white clover and Poepratease linger
ing in the - firm grain. A - large tin
vessel,; designed expressly -for the
business has , - chambers at each , end,
into which ice is put. Thin wooden
shelves, about three Incheit-apart t rest
on little projections' fromthe sides.
A layer of balls is then placed on the
bottom and covered's/it/1 itq shelf,but
no so as to touch or mar the hand-
some print of a sheaf of grain, which
stands out on the top of elekball ;
on the shelf another layer of 'prints,
and so on till the , vessel iefull,4they
- containing' forty or fifty Bs. prints.
The tin, with ice in each end is then
set in a woodfin tub which has been
cooled with ice or spring water Over
- -this is drawn a. cover- of padded cei
peting, with oil cloth on top. Thus
hot air and dust is wholly excluded )
and the . butter rides to - the city and
opens in the market-house in as fine
condition as when packed in the
spring house. -In just this way, with
this degree of care and skill,' is the
best Philadelphia butter made, mark
ed and- mirketed.r. No wonder the
Philadelphians would rather pay
seventy-five cents than go back from
such manna to the leeks and onions
of the common firkin.
HiPaz - Ikm AS ♦ Fzzrrtazzit.—Hair
is a good fertilizer to apply to any
kind of soil for any crop that farmers
- raise, Hair is also excellent. to
spread around fruit-trees or grape
vines. If scattered in the drills'
where turnip-seed is to be plaritefi, l
the minute fibers of -the growing
plants will lay hold of,.the hair and
devour it, and thus develop large and
sound turnips. Hair of any kind is
worth, at least, as much per ton as
bone dust. As the *sees are so
small, growing plants, will feed on
the nourishment which is afforded, so
that a hundred pounds of hair will
produce a heavier crop of grass or
grain in qbe first- season after the .
hair is applied than if an equal
amount of bone-dust were scattered
' over the land. Th re is a large per
co- bulge' of phosphatic material in
air. The best niaimer of applying
;it to land it; to spread it broadcast
and harrow it ie,as it is desirable to
have it pear the surface. If applied
to grass-ground, all that is required
is to spread it evenly and thin on the
surface: , It will soon; settle diivin,
'• where it will decay, and be taken up
•by the growing roots. Large quan
tities of hair may frequently be ob
tained for the bare expense of cart
ing. The larger amount of hair
mingled with the soil, rpurid about
grape-vines and fruit-trees, the more
•' abundant will be .the yield . of fine
- fruit.
MAME ' FOR POTATOES.-111 1 ex
change says the following receipt for
q icing potatoes is worth the price of
any paper fortune year, to, any farm.:
er that is short of manure. It is,as
good as the best superphosphate of
lime, and it ivill not cost half so much.
It has been tried two years, and is
good dry land iz Take one cask of
lime rand slack it with. water, and
then stir in one bushel of fine salt,
and then mix it, with loam or ashes
enough, so that it will not become
mortar •, Will make about five bar
rel:4. Put in half a pint in a•hill. All
manures containing potaih are par
ticularly suitable for the potato.
Ashes contain more than any other
natural fertilizer,and should be freely
wed and carefully save - d. Any farm
er seeing the analysis of the rushes of
potatoes, given in last week's paper,
cau really imagine what fertilizer
produces the greatest effect, and
what the plant most. ntede.'—N. Y.
Independent.
Warns.—One of our greatest but
sauces in farming id the -way that
weeds are encouraged and protected
in crooksand vicinity of fences, from
which place their seeds Are scattered
over the surrounding land. The ex
tent to which seed is carried by high
winds proves that one negligent
farmer may annoy hundreds of farms
by failing to exterminate the foul
herbage.
.Could the evils bdcopcen
trated on the farm which um:lies the
weeds, the consequences would be
a proper, punishment for his careless
ness and criminality—for criminal is
any man who nurtures nuicances that
time injure the surrounding farmers.
The fellow who keeps a bulldog that
annoys if not bites the passing travel- ,
err may be reached by the law that
i. pow&less to press the injury oc
cationito his neighbors by the nur•
series of foul weeds which are har
bored about his premises, especially
in rho-vicinity of hierfences.
.CLIANLINESB.-A neat, clean; fresh
aired, sweet,-cheerfnl, well-arranged
house exerts a moral as well as phys
ical influence over its inmates, and
makes the meinbers oft family peace
able and conciderate of each others
feelings and happiness.- The connec
tion is obvious between , the state of
minkthus produced, and habits of re
spent for others, pod for those high
duties and obligations which no laws
can enforce. On the coUtrary, a
filthy, &gland, noxious iodwelling,
which none of the deciencies of life

its inhabitants selfish, sensual, and
