g) , Ipin!14101. &Apo Latifliaatincot 00:131. I believe by eaily.planting; bay !small:l43'4th - to the 10th of;litay; the farmer, is mare-outellitif good yield. I will admit ihat late planting will sometimes bring 'aii good . * crop as that which Was planted earlier, but to dosso.it'requires a very favor able Boerne. :Atm ,known a good crop 'raised from...ea tainted as late as the sth of June, but.the season was very favorable, and _the corn received no "backsets," and had nothing to do but grow . It seems that after the plant has reached a certain stage it is not materially injured by dry weather: Ail practical farmers know that if •the ears are , not well filled in August there will not be a large crop ; after this the corn will harden, but will not increase in quantity or size. Although as general, thing early plentinf is the best, yet on wet stills there will be little ertfothing gainqd by it. It has always been my plan to plant early, and drop - an extra grain in each hill. .The numbeeof grains required mist depend on the care taken in the selrotiou of the seed. This bran .item which some, even of our best farmers, are too careless about. . The, plan which Ipersue is as fol lows : While cutting the corn, all the best and, largest ears are left standiog, that they 'may get fully ripe. I always choose twice as much as I expect to use ; when the corn is gathered the seed ears are husked and and placed on slats oveethe kitchen, where they remain until spring. Just before planting time they are sorted . over, and those• having the smallest cobs, in proportion 'to the length or '- depth of the grain, are selected for seed. The next operation is to shell three inches - from' the point and one inch from the butt, and use the re• mainder for seed.- : This may seem to some to be too much trouble, but rest assureed that "it will pay," and that well. Another great mistake is , to have too many, stalks in t h e hill. On strong ground three, or four stalks - will produce more corn than five. xI have proved bp. actual experi ment that Corn raised from ',-ved taken ftom the middle of the ear will ripen from two to three weeks soon •vr than that taken from either end. CORN-RAISER. RACING AT PAM—The - Bucks Coun ty Intelligence; whose editor,:_,Mr. Darlington, is the active Secretary of the Agricultural Soeiety of that coun ty, thinks as we do on the question if horse-racing at Farmer's fairs, and refers to the address , 61 the President of the New York Society,in which lie says that the Legishiture ought tp withdraw its aid from agricultural societies which encourage racing and shows and games of all kinds. There is no agricultural society. in the Union that has had more experience as to what these exhibitions ought to be, or that has achieved so much sub stantial and honorable success as, that of New York We bight also 'reler to the old Montgomery County Society which has not encouraged racing.. and which has been well at; tended by the best and most respecta ble practical farmers in the county, and has always been satisfactorily sustained. We trust that it will in the fnturc,as it has in the past, eschew everything not recognized,as beling ing the farm and the household of iheifarmer. It is only by such a course that it will prpve itself enti tlr.iikto what it claims to be, and be come-an acthal benefit to the apical tureof thwconntry. TESTING THE : VITALITY OF SEEDI3.-i We never liked the idea of sowing seeds that would not grow, because it is a very poor way of spending time, and the _result is quite annoy ing. It is a very easy matter to teat the vitality of seeds, and-much time and labor would be saved if every one would do it before .sowing.- A few seeds of almost any of our com mon vegetables may be started in a ,!w days, if they are good,by putting hens into a small pot filled with soil, and, placing them in a warm room, or on the south side of a buildings or fence, after the weather becomes warm. Very small seeds may be sown in damp cotton or bit of MoBB,placed in a saucer or small box, and if - kept warm and moist they will show whether they are good or not Onion-seed will sprout in five minutes if boiling water is poured upon it,and as old onion-seed will not grow, al though it is often sold, the only way is to test it before sowing. "EGG-PlAtir Asa TOMATOES.—Every, person can raise his own tomato and eggplants, with very little trouble. Select a warm border, enrich heavily with horse manure, pulvarize the ground thoroughly, and sow pretty thickly, thinning out if necessary. k common window sash or two, raised two far three inches oiler them, on any kind of supports, will reedy facilitate their vegetation anti growth. If they are transplanted' into other. beds when three or fourLinchas high, so that they'shall stand about three inches apart each way, lt will cause them to become very stout Tin the stem,- and will branch considerably,. making much stronger and more pro da-Ctive plants. Tomatoes should not be set out for a crop until the grOund is warm and settled, say the last of April or first of May, the later per haps the better. Egg-Plants should never be set out Wore the la-ti week in May. We prefer the Fijii tomato, and the • Long Purple egg plant, though many other excellent varieties of the tomato are now introduced, some of which it would be well to cultivate also. Not a day should be lost in getting in the. seed.—German town Telegraph. Crawr bushes may be pruned 1b month with adtantage. Don't be afraid of cutting out to much. Leave only healthy, strong weed of two summers_growth, and your fruit will be larger and almost as much in quantity. A vetty, pretty way of training-is to stretch wires from posts set about twelve feet apart, and tie the stalks fan shaped to them. In this way the currant makes a beauti ful border for a path, and also a pleasing cover .for an unsightly fence. Limos Pis.--The yolk of two eggs; four tablespoonfuls brown sugar, one tablespoonful of melted butter, juice of one lemon ; crust as for custard pie. Bake. While baking beat the whitte of two eggs to- a froth, add two Sblespoonfuls .of white iugar vrtwaa the pie is done, take oat and • spread over the top the white sugar, and bike three minutes. • P2=!SEM dbattjuig.
