Rev. W. A. - Russ, of Corning,
N. Y. , who bad been announced to - occupy
the pulpit of the Presbyterian Church in
this place, on Sunday last, was prevented
from fulfilling his engagement, , by a severe
and painful at tac h of indentation of the

the Presbyterian' urch on Sunday.
We trust Mr. taxa may soon find relief
from his affliction, and that at no distant
day we may have the pleasure of heling
his discourse to young men.
a A correspondent hiWystusing
sends us the following :
FOssix Itinunis.—On Thursday last the
workmen engSged in excavating for the
track of ;the Pe nn'a &N. Y. Bail Road at
Wyaltising, unearthed a quantity of *bat
appears to be decayed ivory, ant is without
doubt a parpcf-the tusk of a Mastadon.—
The substance though retaining well its
colors, was very soft and friable from decay ;
and nearly the whole of it was carried out
with the gravel and covered up on the
"dump," before auy one came who could
give a guess at its nature. But from the
shape of oue piece - secured, showing very
finely the peculiar grain of ivory, the tusk
at that point must have been about six
:nehge in diameter. It wax probably much
lame near its base. .
313 For the benefit of a 'Argo class
of people hereabouts who are in the habit
of patronizing "Gift Enterprises," we pub
lish the following :
The Hon. A. 0. Hite, Mayor of Nair
York, has published a card cautioning
strangers against New York circulars. tick
ets. chances and prospectuses in co-opera
tive unions, or gift enterprises, , or dollar
stores, or any other pOutible k saheme where
by property or "elite is promised greater
than the price asked to beipaid. He says
"every such advertised scheme is tiecessa
rily-a swindle and false pretence. There
does not and cannot tangibly exist any pleb
schemes in this city, and country newspa
pers advertising them simply aid in the
swindle. If an the newspapers in the coun.
try would now make a point of publishing
and reiterating this inforination, they will
charitably and effectually counteract the
swindling intentions of those who use the
mails for false pretences."
ges„We find the following notice
of our old friend and townsman in the Owego
runes of the Bth.
A Lrrnoonara or Owzoo Vu.nsOL—Mr.
Joint MORAY, an artist, is at presant alga
-Area in getting a drawing of the village of
Owego. taken from or near the residence of
D. L. JEFICS, on the 1411. We have seen a•
sketch of the drawing which is indeed very
fine. It shows the Snagnehanna, the bridge.
and the streets, and ; all the churches, resi
dences and other building.; of any import
ance, and very diAinctly. The "shading
and effect are very good, and we have no
doubt, when Lithographed in two or three
colors, it will be a real ornament, an I will
be found in every residence in Owego.
Everybody can judge of the trnthfulnese of
the design at first sight. We hope the
artist may find encouragement sufficient to
enable him to bring out his sketch in good
style's° that it may do credit to Owego."

Pa., respectfully call the attention of the
piblic to the Piano Fortes, Organs and Me
lodeons. In doing so, they desire to state
that their chief aim is always diverted to
instruments which will meet all expecta-
tions and requirements that canto made,
by the most cultivated performers. Feeling
Confident that there are no instruments in
the United States or Europe superior to
those we sell, we beg _leave to mention the
following principal features which we claim
for them :
1. Strength and durability.

harshness, round in bass, rich and singing
in the middle octaves, and of clear bright
ness in high treble. •
3. Elegance in style and finish.
