lolders could scarcely afford to let it

dition to the cost of carrying. * * *
Low as prices were here, they were
still too high to admit of the ocean
transit., The consequence is that
we have pat tly lost the supply of the
British markets this year. The wheat
now held at Chicago and New York
is, so tar, a very costly article.
Bought at high prices, it has been
carcied for months at a heavy charge
for interest and insurance.. • No won

The conclusion to which the -writer
; is led is that "advocates of high

thing thatholders can do is to pi epare
to look, their loosers in the, face as
gracefully as may be, and decide to
let go, least the chance of selling be
denied in toio." Such a conclbsion,
which certainly could not bo adopted
without a struggle,is worthy of care

An COAL ARDIS GOOD TOR IiKY
TITMG.--Seeing the oil(' of ashes strong
ly recomaiended,mary have tried the
refuse of the grate and coal stove
with no flattering results. Then
they ask the lineation in brge letters
above. Yes, coal ashes hive some
value, but for general use much less
,thanlwood ashes. In a general de
scription that answers the purpose
of the farmer, the composition of
wood ashes may be , said to be pot-
ash, sandy matter arid lime. In the
ash, elm, hicory,and white'oak,tbere
is a good deal of lime and potash.
In the ash of pine wood almost no
lime and very' little potash. (oal
ash gives sandy matter and little
lime. All plants want some of that
sandy matter, and it is liberally sup
plied by most , soils. The Biles in the
ash of stone coal has this peculiarity,
it is so fine that the rain dissoltet-if
easily and feeds it liberally to plants
iu the early part of the summer.—
Hence, coal ashes are of most benefit
on crops- or plants thot grow very
„--• fast in May and June and come .
L. harvest early. For cereals, and'
tubers that are harvested later in
- therseason, coal ash* not worth the
labor of carting and apreading. But
on grass, straitherreis, rand
peas, coal ash spread th c in it at, well
raked in is a profitable application.
