gigricultural. The Tamer on the Safe The farmer is apt to think the pro fessional man, or the merchant, lives an easy and luxurious life. In many instances their family May do so ; but with the eminent and successful man of law orscience—the artisan or merchant himself—such a supposition is a greattnistake. There is not un der heaven's broad canopy a more laborious class of men than these:— Labor of body and of mind are theirs, and that incessant. See them early, late, in season and out of season— their whole energies devoted to their several callings without rest or inter mission—and far too frequently to the;premature wasting of life itself. It is no wonder that such industry directed by good education, (and by this term education I mean the entire training of the boy to manhood in its most extended sense,) and stimulated by a laudable ambition, should lead to success. Yet with all these appli ances the labors of such men are of ten disnstrons ; and if not so, after a life of anxiety, their toils too frequent tly end with but the means of a slen der support. Compared with these, the toils of the farmer are light.— Phyeical labor he milting, it is true, and oftentimes severe labor, but his mind is easy. He enjoys sound rest, and good health. He bas much leis ure ; in many cases more than is for his good. He has abundant time to &Reuss politics, law, religion - .every - thing, in fact ; but on what relates to Iris :twn profession, I lament to say, bit mind seems less exercised than on any other subject.. Now let the satne early education be given to the yonug farmer of an equal acute in tellect, that is given to bim who chooses professional, mechanical or mercantile pursuits—education each in his own line ; let them start fair ; apply the same thoughts, investiga tions, energy and toil, each, in his particular sphere, and beyond all question, agriculture will, in the ag gregate, have the advantage—andfor ibis reason, it no other, there are but few contingencies connected with ag riculture. Its basis is "the firm set earth," stamped with the Divine prom ihr;, that while it remains, seed time and harvest shall continue ; while commerce and trade, mechanics and arts are liable to extraordinary and continued accideht. Look at the de - Tastatious by 'llood'and fire—of ship and cargo upon ocean, lake; sea and river ; conflagrations in towns and cities, and the thousand other casual ties which almost daily occur, all of which are dead weight upon labor and capital not agricultural, and the risks of the husbauduuan are _scarce one to ten In the comparison. Rely upon it then, farmers, you are on the "safe Continue in your noble calling and take your position among the sons of men; as the second crea tors of wealth. Farm Proverbs Do not keep more live stock on your farm that you can keep well. House all things as much as possi ble—animals, utensils; and crops. Sell when you Can get a fair price, and do not store for rats -and specu lators. The more comfortable you can keep your animals, the more they will thrive. A good cow is a valuable machine —the more food she properly digests, the greater the profit. A few roots dsily to all the stock are as welcome as apples tb boys and OrN. Iron shoes on sleds. last a lifetime. hey are really cheaper in the end than wooden ones. Replace all the bars where you pass often by strong gates and then wonder that you didn't do so before. Although, in draining land thor .,ughlyoyour purse may be diained, put the full crops that follow will soon fill it again. Always give the soil the first meal. lrit is well, fed with manure, it will ii_t d ail else, plants, animals and men. - A borrowed tool, if broken, should 1 , r, placed by a new one. A nice .•1;,o = of honor in such matters. is much to be commended. It seems strange that houskeepers d.w't buy oai's and tubs with brass hoops and trhurnings. They cost a little more at first but last wonder fully. How MUCH MANURE DO WE USE ON AN Aces.—Au acre of land cuntams 43,- 560 square feet, 4 8,40 square yards, ( ? r 110 square rods. By those who irive used guano, it is said 300Ibs. is sufficient to manure an, acre ; 320 i lbs. would give just, one ounce :avoirdupois to the square yard. One cubic yard would give a trifle over , ne cubic inch tithe square foot. A cubic yard highly concentrated ma ours, like night soil would if evenly spread, mauur•: an acre very well. A cubic yard of long manure will weigh about I:400 lbs, a cubic foot not fur from 50 lbs. A c •rd contains 128 cubic feet ; a cord and s quar ter would give about a cubic foot to the square rod. -If liquid manure be used it would take 180 bbls. to give to. the. square foot upon an acre; which - would be equal to about 40 pipes or large hogsheads. It would bee little more specific as to the amount of manure applied. THE FARMER'S Baeourrse.—Take a common glass pickle bottle, wide mouthed-; fill it within three inches f the top with water ;• then take a common Frorence oil flask,•remove the k straw covering, and cleansing the flask, plunge, the neck of the flask as far as it will go, into the bottle and the barometer is complete. , In fine weather the water will rise into the neck of the flask even higher than the mouth of the pickle bottle, and in wet windy weather it will fall to within an inch of the month of thi tlabk. Before a heavy gale of wind, the water has been seen to leave the flask altogether at least eight hours before the gale came to its height. The invention was made by a Ger man and communicated to a London HORSES AND Cours.—The same re :narks are applicable to these animals as to neat stock, except that the horse will thrive under much severer exposure than cattle, if he has -enough to eat and a shed to go under. It is, however the worst policy to lint the toughness of any animal to ~ , .vcre tasks. Horses must be led up for the bard work of ipring.
