Agricultural Important to Wool .Growero, The following circular from an ex tensive wool house in PhiladelOde contains suggestions "which wattle of value to farmers in this section. It will be seen that these dealers are apprehensive ditt j blood and coarse wool will cox tinuei to llecliite in price, while a good market will always exist for the, long combing wool. . , Philadelphia,_Feb. 1. 1869. Enclosed is "a sample_ of combing wool grown in Illinois, and worth 60 to 53 cents pm' pound to-day in our market in the Unwashed condition. The demand for . these - %eels' in in creasing so rapidly it will be impos sible for the American Farmers to supply enough of-them for years to come. blood wools are now grown in excess of the wants of the country, and soon California and Texas will raise enormous quantities of this quillity, and probably causea farther reduction in the price. If our farmers in the present wool growing sections w•irh to raise wool to a profit; they In do so quite easily and with but light expense in Making the change. LA them buy of the Canadian ,::nmers young Leicestershire, bucks a . cost of $8 to $lO each, and cross thew with their medium and charge wool ewes, and they will produoe sheep valuable for mutton, and bear ing the wool which is most wanted and said to -command a high price. These sheep will be hardy, but they shou'd be sheltered from the storms in winter end fed on turnips and oth• er reots rather than corn, that the wool staple may be strong and lust rous. - Drying off Dairy Cows. When butter and cheese bring I such prices Ls the present, the farmer hai a very strong incentive to contin ue milking his cows,, regardless of their condition, until he does' them absolute injury, and in the ultimate result makes a - loss of property - to himself. After frost has inured the pasture feed, cows can no more than they are able to gather a sufficient amount to fill themselves daily, and every quart of milk • taken from them ! robs the system of fat and muscular strength which is necessary to sup ort them through wintei. CoWs that are milked now should have extra feed, such as pumpkins, roots, or corn fodder, even if in good condition, for if they go into the stalls in a declining state,it will up hill busi tiese: to make them gain or even hold their, own during the winter. Those that are thin in flesh, if well along in years, should not be milked another time, They- require more time than a heifer for recovery, and all the ex tra feed that can be given is demand ed for the laying on of the flesh and giving strength after the long draft on their system. I f one dollar a day can be made from 1.,. cow of this kind for the next month or six weeks, more than that many d•llars - will be lost in extra winter food required, and the injurious effect that will follow into the next season. Dairymen are now in the habit of having their cows come in a month or two earlier than was practiced a few }ears ago, and this adds another reason for the early drying them up, to give a proper time to rest before parturition. A heifer 'that has - given milk the pat, summer for the first time, shonld 1 well fed and milked as long as ,.l!e will pay for the trouble, provided tile time is not extended up toter aec ,md coming in. Cows and many other anirualgi are creatures of habit, and may be moulded by care into al most any form of habit. If a cow is milked late in the season after 11,:r first calf, her flow of milk will hild out much better in the future. Iu no case • should we advocate iniitting from one period , . of partnri _tic,n to another, for the mingling of the nev. secretions with the old milk is contrary to nature's laws, -4Ful very likely to endin some obstinate dis ease of the - udder.— Ohio Farmer. Farmers' Eons. At the last annual meetng of the New York State Agricultural Sucie ;;ty, Gen. Patrick made the following remarks in regard to the growing aversion among farmer's sons to farm work : "Only a few of our children are IV I wiling 'in our footsteps. The old are left alone. With failing health and increasing years many-are com pelled to sell out the homestead and live in a village, where it is possible to live alone. Our young men are showing a great aversion to honest toil. Often, if they remain on the farm, they are more interested in fast horses than tr,auing steers Others engage in trifling, undignified occu pations, such as selling maps, books, patent rights, or even clothes pins. They are attracted by genteel ways and habits. At the best they seek commercial adventures, and through this-means sudden and great riches. Can they not read their fate by the wrecks of thousands in the city of New York who attempted the same thing. For able-bodied, strong, men to quit thelarm and engage in such trifling pursuits as have been named, or to attempt, where thousands fail, in city occupation, they should be ashamed. Whenever the 1.4b0r in any country is considered dishonora ble,the doom of that nation. is sealed. Until the idea prevails that labor is honorable •there can be no bright hope before us. When we find a country divided into small estates, and each proprietor labors with his own hands, we have a happy people. Under small homesteads grew up these people before which the world trembled when they buckled on their swordsthe ancient Romans. Look at the large plantations of the South, with degraded laborers, and you need not ask the result. Countries are ciltivated, not according to the fertility, but:according to their liber ty Agriculture is the 'basis of the happiness of a State, and it is the r.(ist honorable as well as the moat : , eient of all professions." PRorEerma Faurr.-We have heard of protecting strawberries from birds , by placing a stuffed cat on the beds. One of our Canadian neighbors says hr has been quite successful in pro ; sting cherries by the use of stuffed • hawks perched on the trees above them. THE decrease in the crop of wild Whortleberries, caused by the culti v.ltion of hitherto waste lands, togeth• r with increased. consumption, has enchanced the value of the article that they now sell for from $5 to $ll per bushel. At such rates they ought o pay better than Norway Oats or even the latest and most wonderful potato. ~; BEDRLL & VAN-VELSOB, PAEUTIONABLE • \ MERCHANT TAILORS ! AND Dilllit 'BEADY - MADE CLOTHING!
