PERBONA4—We are extremely grat ified to observe that the people of Towanda and vicinity are cultivating a taste for pain tings,i, pictures and works of art, before, as we believe, imperfectly developed inorelor want of opportunity than disposition. The past year and especially the past winter has afforded them a splendid opportunity for this purpose, if we mny judge.from the dis play upon the n counters and from the shelves and show-windows of our book-stores and walls of our picture gallerys. They have had chromes in abundance, and; any pictures and colored photographs all most beautiful. And yet while these are very nice with which to decorate the walls of our houses we should feel that there was .a very great desideratum were =there no Artist with us by whose skill we could ob tain just as beautiful pictures of the mem bers of our own families. Bat fortunately we have each a one in the person of Mr, G. W. Gusrne. This gentleman came - to us last fall well recommended, and his work since done speaks very highly of his skill and ability as a painter. We have been favored with a peep at some of his produc tions and confess that they were very ably executed. They consistprinciPally of India Ink work, Water Color and Oil Paintings.— Those in India Ink are chiefly copies from pictures of deceased persons or others who wish fine large pictures from - small ones in their possession, And yet copies of this kind can also be worked up splendidly in oil.— These are good, the copying and enlarging being done at Messrs. HABDPIG & Sars.usr's Gallery, in connection with which Mr. G, is principally employed, and whose also all sittings for other works whether in oil or otherwise are given. Those done in. oil es pecially attracted our attention and elicited our praise. The rotundity of the figure, the beautiful arrangement of . complimentary colors, the artistic blending of light and ahade, and the very life-like expression, ren der these very pleasing anff compel us to pronounce them not only most artistic but in many cases surpassingly beautiful A specimen of this work may be seen a the News Room of Asvonn da Beans in Post Office building. The qifes4un of a supply of water for domes& purposes and as a protection against fire, is always one of great - importance to a flourishing village, and one which excites more or less discus sion. The present unprotected state of our town' as regards a supply of . water, . has brought the subject prominently forward. On Thursday-of last week, upon the invita tion of B. B. Brazaru., of Owego, N. Y.; agent for the Holly Manufacturing Compa ny, the Burgess and Counciltof this place, visited Binghamton; to examine Holly's sys tem of Fire Protection and Water Supply, works having been recently put up In that city. A thorough instiection.of the works I was made, and the power of the maabillery tested, as applicable to fire purposes, ind the unanimous and arrears' t' able conclusion was, that this method of procuring water was Preferable to any other where ma chinery is required. The works are located near the river—the water is procured from two large wells, and forced by peeved machinery , through the Pipes, of which about thirteen miles are already laid down. A pressure of 40 lbs, to the inch is sufficient to supply the torn, while for fires a force of - three times that amount can be applied. An ingenious dualism sounds. a whistle at the 'wort*, -whenever a hydrant is opened,— notifying the engineer that a fire has Inches out; and that more pressure te required. .Vuoct***" . igimm-434D.
