AgvieulturaL &oak Raising ana Dairyint Animals should be kept growing all the time during winter as 'well as summer. By thus doing heifers, if of good breed, are 'of ample _ size to come in when they are two, years old.; and thereafter while making all, their future growth, they not only pay their own way, but they, pay a profit besides. Stock raising and dairying in this section Amid always be com bined to realize the highest success. In this way beeves may be prepared for market when they are three years old, and so on all the way up to seven years old. If heifers, when they come in promise to become good milkers, (they should be kept until their frames attain the large stand most profitable size before they are fattened for beeves. But if for any reason they prove unsatisfactory as milkers, then they-can be fattened at an earlier age. Still the 'poorest milker can be made to give milk enough to pay the -entire expense of fattening. while good ;milkers will pay a large profit over and above such expense. The whole secret of getting a large flow of milk from cows is to feed high, and to exercise good judgment in the kind of feed used. In the sum mer season, when, pastures are good, the flow of milk is usually good, without much _carp or: attention.— Bat oven at this Oworaile season, so advantageous is. variety in food, it would be better to give cows a little well cured hay or clover every day, which is frequently craved for ani mals stomachs, filled to excess with the juices of green grasses. To have access even to a stack of wheat straw Js highly beneficial ; and this of itself has been found' a complete preventa tive.to hoven in cattle when turned out on to green and succulent clover in spring. But it is the fall, winter and spring, when the flow of milk too often fails to be kept up in mulch cows, to be profitable, they should have all the feed they want. The more they will eat, the greater the profit to be de rived from them. Here it is au ob ject to vary their food, _so they will have lea all times a good appetite and be heavy eaters. Two, quarts of corn meal placed in "a bucket and the bucket filled two thirds full of boiling hot water, and the whole stirred, and afterwards wheat bran added to thick en, until the vessel is filled(letting it sand long enough to get sufficiently cooled), is an excellent morning and evening mess for a cow. But oil cake meal in the place of the corn meal, serves as a good substitute, a third or a half the time. At noon each day a peck (or half a peck) of turnips or beets, carrots, potatoes, or apples should be given. As turnips, however, and oil cake meal also, are apt to impart a slightly objectionable taste to the- milk, unless fed immedi ately-after milking, the noon feeding would be better to be the corn meal and bran, when the former articles are a portion of the daily feed. Of course an ample supply - of clover hay, corn fodder ol sheaf oats, should be given besides the three messes we /have named. Clover hay is always excellent for milch cows, and as two and a half tons can begrown to the acre (one and a half tons the first cutting, and one ton,the second cutting s ) this should uniformly be provided as be ing the best and most economical hay. Corn fodder, however, when on hand, may be given alternately with this. Of course' cows should have all the pure water they want. In this section porbably no feed is so cheap to raise for animals as-corn. There is as much nutriment in bushel of corn meal as there is in four or five bushels of turnips. And yet, so .beneficial are roots, that we would willingly pay the same price for tur nips as for corn, rather than ,a cow should not-have at least half a peck of turnips or something similar every day, Mitch cows, taken care of in the manner we have described, will be increasing in flesh all through the winter, and the milk from each cow will be worth at least fifty cents a day. Consequently ten cows, giving milk throughout, the winter, would ►,ring in 'daily profit of three dollars, besides the increase in flesh of the cows and the immense quantity of manure produced.—Rural New York er. Thirsting for Land 'One of those most grievous errors of the past and present generation of American farmers, is the almost in satiable thirst for more land. Not one of a thousand, though possessed of five times as many acres as he can profitably or successfully till, is sat isfied. While this is perfectly natal.- al,it is at the same time very unwise. The farmer recognizes his wealth in the multiplication of his broad acres, just as the merchant or banker does his in the accumulation of green backs ; but, the, difference between The two is that the farmer may add acre to acre, without the ability to render the investments productive, while the merchant or banker has no difficulty in finding profitable invest ments for his greenbacks. It is al ways bad policy to buy more land, and give manure in homeopathic doses to that already in possession. The safe and sure 'guide for the farmer is to attempt the cultivation of no more acres than he can keep in perfect good heart, and every day's experience demonstrates the fact that, with occasional exceptions, a little farm well tilled is more profita ble in the end than a large one indif ferently cultivated. We once read a story of a Frenchman who had two daughters. One of them married, and received one-half of the paternal vineyard as her dowry.. To the old man's enprise, the half he bad reserv ed, receiving as much cultivation as he formerly bestowed on the whole, yielded ita much as the whole had. The second married, andtgave her one-half of what he had L itiad still he had as many grapes frela%is re maining fourth as heck to.get from the whole.
