gtgriculturat. Two Iltrrrs roil Houma : 1. To, prevent chafing the breath of horses. The common practice of using pads or 'sheepskins under collars it objec tionable, especially ip warm weather. because it accumulates heat-and makes the breast tender. A better way is to take a piece of thick and smooth leather,. out out just the nice of the collar, or a little wider, and let it lie flat on. the neck and shoal • dere date horse. This smooth on, the neck, while the collar itself moves without chafing. In addition to this, let the breasts of working horses be washed off every night with clean water. 2. In reference to blanketing horses in winter. It is doubtless true that blanketing- keeps a horse's coat smoother in winter. And hence, fine carriage horses and saddle horses will doubtless continue to be blanket- ed. But where horses are kept more for service than for show, we think they had better dispense with the blanket. Keeping them constantly covered makes them tender and liable to take cold. Better give them a warm, stable, plenty of straw for bedding, and good food. When they are to stand for any length of time out of doors on a cold winter's day, they ,should have blankets. And so Alen they come'in from work steam ing hot, they should be allowed to stand a short time until they have partially cooled off Clhen the blanket should be put on for an hour. Be careful rnd not delay putting on the blanket until they have become chin e. d.—Bural American. AIHYALS THAT CHEW mu ClTD.—lia minating animals gather their food rapidly, give it a few cuts with their teeth, and swallow it. It goes to an interior receptacle, where it is moist- ened ; this is very essential if it be the day hay. When the animal has filled himself, he masticates the food thus - stowed_ away in his stomach, raising it cud by cud. When a por- tion is completely masticated, it pass es into another receptable, and the process of digestion goes on. Thus an ox, if left to himself, will raise and masticate all the food thus stowed away in his stomach. If he be pushed and worked hard, and does not have much time to masticate, he falls of in flesh, his health is poor, his digestion is incomplete. The horse, on the contrary, however much he may be in a hurry, he must masticate each mouthful before he swallows it. A hungry ox let into a meadow will fill himself in twenty minutes, while a horse would want at least an hour and twenty minutes to take the same amount of grass. The dee'rothr3ep, goat, chamois, and rabbit, being the natural prey of ferocious beasts, are endowed with the extra stomach in which hastily to stow away his food without mastication. This may be regarded as 'a wise provision of na tore, enabling them to sally forth where the food is plenty, and in a short time fill' themselves and retire to a place of safety, to ruminate their food at their leisure. BOILED POT/TOM—Not one house keeper out of ten knows how to boil potatoes properly. Herp is as Irish -method, one of the best we know of. Clean wash the potatoes, and leave the skin on ; then bring the water to h boil,' and throw them in. As , soon as boiled soft enough for a fork to be easily thrust through them, dash some cold water in the pot, let the -.. potatoes remain two minutes, and then pour off the water. This done, halfiremove the pot-lid, and let the potatoes remain over a slow fire till the steam is evaporated, then peel, and set them on the table in an open dish. Potatoes of a good kind, thus cooked, will always be sweet, dry, and mealy. , A covered dish is bad for potatoes, as it keeps the steam in' and makes them soft and watery. Sum , should have dry sheds, sun ny yards, and be fed from racks and troughs. Graining should commence as grass fails, and the flocks should be so divided that those placed to gether are of about equal strength. The high price of linseed cake and meal will prevent their use to a great extent. Corn is the natural substi tute, and a good one, but it must be used with great caution. Keep sheep constantly and, gradually gaining. Ewes served in November will yearn in April ; that is, 10 days. To make a cake without ega, take two cups of sugar, dissolved in three cupi of buttermilk ; sift one quart of flour, and work into'it two large ta *le-spoonfuls of butter, (or good sweet lard with a little salt); one teaspoOnful of finely pulverized soda. Stir these to a smooth batter ; flavor with extract of lemon or vanilla, and bake in a quick oven. This will keep three days, and is better the second day than the first, if it is put in a stone jar and covered close as soon as cold. I Rwrs ix OArs.—A Southern paper says that the rats may be effectually kept from oats in the stack, or in the barn, by sprinkling wood ashes pret ty freely among the bundles. _The ashes get into the nose and eyes Lof the- rats, producting a dis agreeable sensation, and they leave the premises. The ashes at the same time will be beneficial to the stock. 1 Ozanne should be cleaned and put in order to be filled for winter. It is well also to look after the arrange• ments fcr supplying the farm stock with water during the winter. 'lf there is not a supply in the barn yard, perhaps a few dollars expernlcd rightly will bring down an unfailing stream'from a spring. Ws see it stated that coal or gas tar applied about a corn•crib_ will keep the grain from devastation by rats. IF you would not have your horses acquire the habit of hanging in the halter, do not strike him tn"front when young. , THE best food for fattening fowls is said to be ground oats mixed to a dough with water or milk. The latter is the best. - Psovzssos Spooner objects to saw ing off or shortening the horns o ,cattle. It gives pain to the anima - and impairs its strength. AY item of importance in plowing, to see, before begining, if there is any defect in the surface of the ground that can be modified or cor rected. Tat Norfolk Chronicle condemns the use of check reins on horse. They spoil their months, impare their tem pers,_ and render them _generally uneasy. • elotlAng.
