a load of buckshot in his body." , The
riung man, when arrested by the
police, __and brought into the street,
was greeted with the cheers of km
assembled crowd, eel be had been
the gallant hero of some chivalretu
and daring deed. Subsequently the
inquest held upon the mangled bod y
of the unfortunate roman, returned
a verdict that he came to his death
at the bands of some person unknown;
and after a preliminary
. examinaticie

which the evidence unmistakably co
victed young GRANT as the • assess' ,-

enormity of the offence would •hive
been greatly lessened. The avenger
of fancied or real wrongs doesoot
seem even to have made certain that
he was punishing the real offender,
but - hiding himself in a place Of secu
rity with the door locked, and sur
rounded by guns and pistols, with a
cowardice which is without parallel,
and an atrocity which sickens, he
coolly slays a neighbor as if he had
been a mad dog. ..
.
For this dark deed of treachery,
cowardice and brutality, a Richmond
community cheers and applauds the I
assassin, and the mayor hastens to i
add his endorsement of the act,'hy 1
setting him free on bail, whilst the
probabilities are that a jury . will
acquit him of any crime. The perpe
trator of this outrage appears to be
regarded and treated as a specimen
display of Southern chivalry. To '
any except a Southern community, it
seems so unmanly, so cowardly, so
brutal, that the approval and coun
tenance of the Richmond people is
shocking and inexplicable. It should
be regarded as the legitimate result
of that system of society, now happi
ly-abrogated, but which in the past
brutalized and barbarized the South.
The chivalry which looks to assassina
tion in the vindication of character for
the redress of wrongs, is worthy
of the darkest days of Venice or the
most expert of Italian bravos. No
where, except where slavery had de
graded the instincts and demoralized
the public sentiment would such an
outrage receive tpopular commenda

Richmoato set the sanction of their

ST ATE TBEASIUREE.
The following. very sensible . ie
marks upon a subject which is begin
ing to attract public attention are
from the Lebanon - Courier, The fact,
or at least the 'popular .supposition
that the office is , a. v'ery . lucrative one,
makes a scramble for the'place which
has done more than anything I else to
debauch legislatures and deMoralize
the politics of the State, The - State
Treasurer has, at times millions of
dollars at his disposal, and the temp-
tation to malfeasance in office is too
great to inflict' upon - any man. Hun
dreds of the:lda:ids-of, dolhira - thight
be saved to the State by proper legis
lation. No better time than this
winter will' sobn occur to reniedy the
defects which exist in . the la ain re
gard to the public money, nit the
public would, thereby hair an evi
dence that the Republican party are
diepased to guard the interests of the
tax-payers, • and remove a fruitful
source of corruption.
The Courier remarks : ,
The office of-Itille Treasurer in Pennsyl

the most,prodtable position in theillonnism

there will bo a coals:noun line of rail from'
ller Yorktoliararanc4sco--the longest , in
the 'world: A European passenger can then
km Liverpool or London and reach Yoko
hama and Stuinghte,:tria New York, at least
.ilttein days earlier than by any other rout%
certainly until they have railways through
Asia, and are not troubled with the great
number of transfers of frbight to be made
between London and China. The time giv
en is this : From Lfverpool to New York,
ten days ; New . York to San Francisco, six
days ; and from San FranciscO to Yoko
hama, twenty-two days. This latter time
can,be cut down to eighteen days, and the
trip has been made in that time. • But let
us call it nineteen days, and that makes
- thirty-five days tiom Liverpool to China,
via New York, while the shortest time in
which the trip can now be made, going
eastward, is sixty days. It will be seen ut
once that the travel passing from Western
Europe to . Eastern Asia will pass over the
Paoiflo Road.
