D. A. Orsaros & Co , coal dealers
Towanda, have been offered 60 cents per
ton more for all their coal than they retail
it for to their revisit. customers. Who
says coal nietilmve no conscience,
The above statement, which appearsin
the Elmira Advertiser, is titre. Parties hive
been here from Woutly and Owego, offer
ing fifty cents math per ton, for hod, than
the retail price in the yard, and agreeing to
take all the coal purchased by Messrs. 0.
, Co. This offer was refused, as the pres
ent proprietors of the coal yard, have set
.out with a determination to do a legitimate
business, by supplying all the coal demand
ed by this place and neighborhood, at fair
prices.
BCHGLABY AT CHICIarI4I3.—On Friday
night the store of J. M. Sawrza, in the vil
lage of Chemung, was entered by burglars,
and goods consisting of boots, shoes,
o lot hes, &c.-, of the value of three or four
h undyed dollars were taken. The ittore
was entered by way of the cellar, which
.'•as broken open with tools stolen from a
blacksmith shop near by. The - burglars
made their escape with their booty, and
have not yet been captured.
FATAL RAILROAD ACCIDENT.—A young
man by the name of Barker, on freight
train No. 24, eastward bound, was knocked
from the top of the cars, while engaged in
hauling in the bell rope, on Saturday, Nov.
14th, near Waverly. He was struck by a
bridge under which the train was passing,
and fell between the cars which passed ov
or his limbs below the hips. Ho was ter
ribly mangled and in , great agony.
He was taken to Waverly and medical aid
procured but he died soon after.
He was engaged to be married-soon to
3liss Mason, of Harpersvillo, to whom a
telegram was sent. The young lady hast
ened to Waverly but in time only to find
her affianced was dead. Her grief can be
conceived but not described. The sync
thies of all will be with her inThis g at
affliction.
CasroN.—Mr. Editor : What has
become of your worthy coirespondent
0? Has the early encroachthents of Old
Itoreas sealed the fount frord whence his
interesting communications flowed, or has
unappreciated labor been so irksome that he
has vowed no more " to waste his sweet
ness on the desert air?" hinny of your
friends were looking for a sketch of "our"
doings in your last issue, but were doomed
to disappointment.
rho principal item of interest,—the Fe
ver has abated some now—was the Exhibi
tions on the evenings of the IStkund 14th
iCsts., under the auspices of the Good
rexuplars. They were a grand success. It
was the intention of the Troupe—for so we
may well designate the performers—to fur
nish a single evening's entertainment, but
:lie highly gratifying features of the per
formances, and the limited capacity of the
Hall, induced a call from the public, for a
.repetition of the Exhibition, which could
,not be passed unheeded. Saturday even
ing came and with it, a, crowded home, and,
ilniost an entirely new programme, show
ing what a day may bring forth even in
C.inton.
Tragedy, comedy, pantomime and music,
wera the agreeable varieties of the occa
,ion; while the ingenuity and originality,
evident in the appointments of .the stags,
and the management of the entertainment,
from first to last, elicited the deserved en
co❑inws of an intelligent and admiring
audience.
It would be out of place and impossible
in this brief article to mention by name
those who were actively 'interested in the
Exhibition, and do each justice. Their
eff however were highly appreciated,
I,th by the public, and the Order. At a
subst pieta meeting of the Lodge, a vote of
thanks " to the Canton Brass Band, and
the citizeL.s not members of our Order, who
ren, lervd ellicient services during the Exhi
-1 awn," was unanimously passed.
"rho same Troape intend to give our Band
a Benefit the coming Holidays.

The extensive brewery of the
Messrs. Hughes & Brother, in Pittston,

The propeity was insured for about $38,000.
The fire probably caught from the spark of
locomotive passing on the Lehigh Valley
tailroad, by the side of which the building
stood.

REPCBLICAN MEET'S°. —A spirited
Republican meeting was held in the Court
House in lidontrase on Moiiday evening - of
last week. A crowd fdled`the Court room
said overflowed into the hall. Mr. ()sow
made an earnest and thoughtful speech, re
viewing the history of political parties of
this country and of the groat struggle which
has terminated in the destruction of the
system ot -American Slavery, closing with
an augury of a glorious future for the Re
publican party and the country.
The following preamble and resolution
were offered by Wm. 11. Jassur, Esq., and
were unanimously adopted :
WHEW -04 the next Legislature will have
to elect a Senator in place of Hon. Charles.
B. Buckalew, whose term expires on The
fourth of March ; and whereas only a tried
and true statesman 'should be chosen to
that office—a man whose political record is
without a stain, and who combines ability
and exalted character with Legislative eve:
rience, therefore—
Rtsolved, That in Hon. Galasha A. Grow
we have such a man. . For twelve years a
Representative in Congress, through the
most trying struggles that have marked our
history as a nation, he never in a single in
stance faltered or deserted the cause of
freedom ; and in the days 'when to be an
anti-slavery man was a reproach he stood
firmly for the Right, resisting fearlessly all
the schemes of the slavery propagandists.
As a legislator and public speaker, ho has
devoted the best portion of his life to the
advancement of the principles of the Repub
lican party. His long experience as a mem
ber of the House and Speaker of that body,
fits him in an eminent degree for a seat in
the Senate of the United States, and ire
therefore earnestly recommend his election
as due alike to his integrity of eharacter, his
ability as a statesman, his experience as-it
legislator, and his - unswerving devotion
through a long period of public service to
liberty,and equal rights.
BES.. Groups of- admiring children
gaze wistfully at the windows of Harr's
Confectionery Store, where are displayed
all those 'knick-knacks so enticing to the
eyeS of the young, and which are not un
appreciated by • children of a larger
growth. Visions of Christmas trees and
stockings, plethoric 'with candies and toys'
are suggested to the youngsters, which will
not be vain if parents take an-early oppor
tunity to " lay in" the needful supplies for
the coming holidays. 'Centers will find a
first-rate assortment at low prices, and they
should be in season with their orders.

liir Two fools have been making
a public exhibition of their silliness, at Dan

the other by grinding a hand organ ;—and
another lunatic at Milton by carrying a sack

the late election. This sort of thing is pret
