Why Fat& °ann.! be Kept iri large now
, • bent 11
It is pretty generally conceded
that, no one is successful who at
tempts to keep together a large num
ber of fowls, and that those who keep
the emilleit number ' together gener
ally obtain the greatest proportional
number of eggs. And this is, we
think, not only true, but easily. to be .
accounted for.
Every one who has kept fowls
knows that they
_are very uncleanly
birds.. They even wash themselves
in the dirt, and that evidently not for
the purpose of cleanliness, but to rid
themselves of vermin. ' They prefer
clean, light sand, because if in the
sun it is generally warmer, and it is
easily moved; but they seem equally
to enjoy any soft, dry earth, although
-it may not be very sweet and clean.
They are notoriously filthy in-their
coops, roosting under each other,tak
ing no pains to avoid the droppings;
soiling their food, water and nests
with their droppings, did doing no
act apparently towa rds , • cleanliness.
This is more apparent in the hone
where they are confined, and where
the air should be as pure as p ossible.
If they are at large and' few in num
ber, they move around so much that
they cannot scour the ground. They
are by nature clean, butby habit the
reverse, and the only Way to keep
' them in the natural state is to give
them range enough, so that:they can
not soil their haunts, or else cleanse
their haunts carefully and faithfully
every day. .
We kept one solitary hen on our
place for several months. She was
of the common barn yard breed.—
We never saw a healthier fowl, or
one whose feathers kept so fresh and
perfect, and she seas a edustant layer.
care was taken of her, and we al
ways attributed her, thri ft to the fact
that she had the whole range of oar
place for' exercise and her quarters
were always perfectly clean.
As soon as your flock becomes large
yon will find them crowding togeth
er and always souring their haunts,if
there are a sufficient number to do it.
Yon may do something towards pre
venting this, but you cannot keep
very large flocks very clean. .
We have often seen it stated, that
not more than fifty hens should be
kept in a hen-house twenty feet by
ten. Except with constant care and
cleaning,tbat number cannot do very
well in a smaller space. Close up
such a house some cold night, when
you have neglected cleaning it'for
a few days, and go in from the fresh
air in the morning, and you will be
suprised at the impurity of the air
therein. Drive the flock out into the
15pen air and you will see what a
change it produces in -them, and how
lively they will become in :a few min.
utes.
. The size of the flock must lways
depend upon the extent t'i'the accom
modations, and even then t e large
flocks cannot be kept so cleanly and
healthy as the small ones, and there
fore are not in proportion so profita
ble.—Country Gentleman.
SAVE us DEAD lam-Ea.—lf every
horticulturist and farmetworild think
for a moment on the naturecf fallen
leaves,—which contain not only the
vegetable matter, but the earthy
salts, lime, potash, &c., re — eded for
the next season's growth and • fertil
ity,) and that too, exactly in the pre
portion required by the very tree and
plant from which they fall ;—nay,
more, if they would consider that it
is exactly in this way, by tho decoin
poeition of these very fallen leaves,
that .nature enriches the soil, year
after year in her great forests; it I
would hardly be possible for such a
reflecting horticulturist or farmer to
_allow these leaves to be swept away
_allow
every wind that blows,and finally
. lost altogether. Nor would be give
them away, as many now do.. He
would rather Collect, from week to
week, the leaves that fall under each
' tree, and by digging them under the
about the roots, where they will
decay, provide in the cheapest' man
ner the beat possible food for that
'tree. If this plan should be tried we
should not see orchards dyingoul for
want of nourishment.; 'but they
would, in this simple manner, receive
. all the enriching they required. Pear
trees, and doubtless the peach,would
be greatly benefited by this prow.
(lure.
In certain vineyards in France and
Italy, the vines are kept in the high
est condition by simply burying at
their roots every leaf and branch that
is pruned off, or falls from the vines
at the close of the season. Will not
some of our farmers of inquiring
minds give this simple process a trial
this season 1--Springfield Republican.
GRAPE GROWER'S AUXINS.
1. Prepare the ground in fall, plant
in spring.
2. Give the vine plenty of manure,
old and well decomposed, for fresh
manure excites growth, but it does
not mature it.
3. Luxuriant growth does not al
ways ensure fruit.
4. Dig deep, but plant shallow.
5. Young vines produce beautiful
fruit, but old vines produce the rich
est.
6. Prune in autumn -to insnro
growth, but in the spring to promote
fruitfulness.
7. Plant your-vines before you put
up trellises.
8. Vines, like soldiers, should have
good arms.
9. P,nme spurs to one weldevel•
oped bud, for the nearer the old wood
the higher flavor the fruit.
10. Those, who prune long must
soon climb.
11. Vine leaves love the sun, the
fruit the shade.
12, Every leaf has a bud at its
base, and either bunch of fruit or a
tendril opposite to it.
13. A tendril is an abortive fruit,—
a bunch Of ,fruit a productive ten
dril.
14. Laterals are like politicians ; if
not checked they are the worst of
thieves.
CHEAP Viccants thal.ka.—Sink a
barrel twathirds of its depth into the
ground (a box or cask will answer
better purpose) ; heap the earth
around the part projecting out of the
ground, with a slope on all sides •

• with a water tight covet ; and when
winter sets in, throw an armful of
straw, hay, or something of that sink
on the barrel. If the bottom is out
of the cask or barrel it Will be better.
Cabbages, celer y and other vegeta
bles, will 'keep in this way as fresh
as when•taken from the ground. The
celery should stand nearly perpendic
