—Mrs. Harriet Hew - lett,of Merrick,
L. L, on Friday of last week, saturated her
clothing with kerosene and then set fire to
them. She was burned to death. The act
was done during a temporary fit of insan
ity. Sha was about 30 years of age.

Should not the verdict just rendered
convince it that it can never win a
victory on these issues ? It may:be
assured . that so long as it will insist
upon fighting over again with the
ballot the battles that have "been,
fought out once by the bayonet,it, will
always be be beaten. The crimes of
the great rebellion, and • the heroic
sacrifices of blood and treasure made
to suppress it, will never fade from
the memory , of the ~ - generation that
participated in these events. If left
to float gently down 'the stream of
time, they will by-and•hy be remem
bered only as a dark and troubled
period of our history. But if the
Democracy insist upon pressing these
'questions upon the poblic considera
tion at every recurring Presidential
election they must expect to enconn
ter a stern rebuke from men" who
would fain see peace and prosperity
restored to a country that haw:suffer
ed so much rough the violence of
treason of use who dictated the
principles, a lected the candidates,
and led the van of the party'in the
campaign which has just closed.

changes effected in the State Senate
by the late election. Eleven Senators
were chosen ou.thet 13th ult. ,for the
2d, 4th, 11th, 12th; 13th 18th,19th,
22d 28d 25th and 27th districts: Of
the new Senators seven pre Repnbli
cans and four .Democrats ; ,a Demo
cratic giiin of two. These gains are
in.the 12th and' .19th districts.

his annual report. It shows an ev
penditure of $3,977,000. There were
