Warar Caor or 1868.:—The month- . ly report of the Deparment of Agri culture for the months of August and' September, contains the following interesting statements respecting the wheet crop of the present season. The corespondence of August and September has been very voluminous and indefinite concerning wheat fur nishing numerouti and contradictory elements in a calculation of quantity. Statements of disappointed expecta tions in threshing are sufficiently abundant in the South, in Wisconsin and other parts of the West, to fur nish-themes for -agricultural croak era ; a little rust here and there, the chinch bug, and other causes of fail ure are found ; the grasshopOer at certain points in the distant west has been a burden to wheat-growers. On the other hand,c,ases are mention ed of a three-fold acreage with half an average yield, giving a fifty per cent. aggregate increase notwith standing the lout ; numerous returns declare the present the largest crop in many years ; and the majority, in view of the general increase in acre age, show a better result than that of last, •year, after accounting for losges in the yield. It may be stated, however, that the average yield per acre of the whole country is scarcely equal to that of 1867,but the increas ed area sown will secure an aggre gate somewhat larger than the pro- duct of that year. BAD LUCK OF THE WlcoxsiN HOP GROWERS.—The hop crop in Wisconsin has proved a bad failure. One half of the crop is destroyed by mold and lice ; nfbre than half the remainder is saved in , a damaged condition ; prices are reduced from sixty cents in 186-7 to 1808 ; the growers refuse to sell prime hops, - - and the buyers iefuse to purchase 'poor. The high prices-of 1867 led ,The farmers'to en ter largely into hop cultivation, and it is estimated that about 15,000 acres were devoted to the crop this year. In fact hop growing became a mania, :mud among a large number of farmersoevery other interest gave way to hops. More land was bought, new buildings were put up, and oth er expenses incurred in the expecta tion of reaping large profits from hop cuittre. The consequence is that many farmers are nearly reined and .great distress prevails, the traders, who were obliged to sell to farmers on credit, being included in the gen: eral disaster. Hundreds of farmers have not rah.ed sufficient wheat to moneytheir families, and have no money to buy! With ; and there are numerous instances of men who with their surplus thousands realized last year bought adjoining farms and yards at high prices, paying part down and giving mortgages to se• cure the remainder, who are now comprotnising by returning the lands with a loss of payments made. CLEANSING CASKS, BOTTLES,EIC.—The inquiry is often made of us by farm ers, brewers, beef and pork packers, etc., regarding the best method of deodotising . and cleansing old eider sad bees barrel, musty cans, bottles, etc. _Chemistry furnishes an agent in the permanganate of potassa which fully meets this want. A pint of the permanganate into the most musty, filthy cider or beer cask and rinsed about a few moments will entirely decompose all fungoid growths and fermenting. matter, and render the izing, disenfecting power of the per manganate, holding as it does five equivalents of oxygen, is wonderful ; it will even deodorize carbolic acid.— The only way to remove immediately the odor, of carbolic 'acid from the hands, ib to immerse them in the luiquid permanganate.—Boston Jour "dal of Chemistry. A Goon FEFrrszen.—A gentleman in Masßaeltusetts, a professor in one el tile colleges there gives the follow ing receipt for manufacturing "one of the Very beet fertilizers used upon (nur farms forall the cereal and root cl ors " Take one barrel of pure finely ground bone and mix it with a barrel , •f good wood ashes ; during the mix ing, add gradually about three pail fuls of. water The heap may be made on the floor of an outbuilding,, or upon the barn floor ; and, by the use of a hoe, the bone and ashes may be thoroughly blended together,. The N 4 a ter added is just sufficient to liber ate the caustic alkalies—potash and coda--and iEese re-act upon the gel latine of the bone, dissolving these little atoms, forming a kind of soap, and fitting it for a plant aliment. In this way the most valuable constitu ents of bones can be made. immidiate ly available, and the addition of pot ash and soda aids in the formation of a fertiliier of inestimable value. The water added is not sufficient to make a pasty mass, difficult to dry but is enough to liberate the strong alkalies from the ashes." PLOWING VP OLD ORCIIARDS.-A goes Lion frequently arises us to the best course to be pursued with an old .neglected orchard, which has become •covered with a dense sod of grass, and this often of an infefiov charac ter, and full of disagreeab'lo, weeds. Orchards that have been Widely plan ted, and which have gaps from the , decay of trees, especially when these have been trimmed lip with stems and long, naked branches do not cast sufficient shade upon the ground to prevent the growth of grass, and weeds. These intruders occupy the surface soil to the disadvantage of the roots of the fruit trees, and we may. wonderfully improve the health of such orchards by ploughing the ground, and at the same time severe ly pruning the branches-and cleaning the track of these old trees. These good results may be continued by shallow culture of the soil, with suit able applications of manure when oceded. By giving a dose of lime,or :nail and ashes, we shall infuse a nevr-lifp and growth and productive ness that will astonish and delight us, and reward us for our labors and outlay. It may be urged" as an objection to breaking,up the sod, that the, most careful plonglimaut will unavoidably damage roots that approach the surface ; but this is an injury that must be submitted to ; and after all, it-is not each la serious affair, and is overblaneetl by the advantages of renewing the ;productiveness of the exhausted orchard. A blind beggar had a brother who went to sea and was 'drowned. Now the man who was drowned had no brother.— What relation was the blind beggar to the man that was drowned. A clock having,-just struck the hour of one, a tender hearted, mother ex claimed, "0, what a cruel clock l" "Why so ?" asked 6 friend: 'Because it stme.h'ita little one I", smorer esi the tender hearted mother.
