grhiltural. The Noon and the. Weather : At the late meeting of the "Boierf tific congress" in Chicago, Professor Loomispresented a 'papa_ -on - this aubjeot. ' ,He mated that from a Om pansOn of; twenty-eight. .years , of observation in - Gertnany,- likshubler deduced sandhi& influence Id' the I moon, the number of 'rainy days the time of-the. second Octant being twenty-five per cent greater than at time of the fourth octant. Eroiii- a comparison of observation, made at Paris, Orange, and Carlsruhe,. Gas parin arrived at results not differing greatly from those-of Schubler. By a comparison of sixteen years of observation at Greenwich, nine years at Oxford, and sixteen years at Ber lin, Mr. Harrison of England has obtained results which are remarka bly -consistent with each other, and which indicate that the moon eterta . an appreciable influence upon tiring tial temperature, the maximum occur ring six or seven days after the new moon, and the minimum , about (our days after full. The difference be tween the maximum near the' first quarter, and the minimum near the last quarter is two and a half degrees of Fabrenhelt. These results, which are so different from What might be ' , anticipated, Mr. Harrison explairis by supposing that the moon really attains its greatest: heat about the' laht quarter, but that the heat which the moon radiates, to the earth is entirely dark heat; and therefore_ absorbed by our atmosphere. The heat raises the temperature of the air above the clonds, causwg the increas ed evaporation from the surface, by which they are dispersed, and thus' there is an increased radiation 'Of terrestial heat to 'the sky, and con-. sequently a diminution in the tempe rature of the air near the ground. He supposes that opposite results must occur at the period of minimum heat' in the moon. In order to compare the influence of the moon with that - of the sun, be has taken the average Cloudiness of Greenwich, as indicated, by observations made every two hours for a period of seven years, and the table showii,—thegreatest cloud iness due •to the moon's influence ocmurs about the time olthe greatest heat ; that is,near the third quarter, and the minimum follows about a week afterithe maximUm,or about one fourth the time of the moon's rota ' tion. This disturbance of the vapor' of our atmosphere gives rise to storms, during which vapor is precip itated, and a, vast amount, of latent heat is liberated. • The Motion of these storms over the earth's surface is influenced by hical causes, such as latitude, proximity to the mountains or the ocean. The result the Profes sor found in the statement that the moon does influence the atmospheric phenomena in an appreciable man ner ; but, in ordinary parlance, the influence being so small, it may be so said that there is no influence of the moon upon the weather. Intelligent Farming. The time of comparative leisure with farmers is in appfoaching, andlit may not be appropriate to suggest some considerations which will lead to such an improvement of this leis ure as will turn it ,to good account. No farmer ought to consider his life as one for mere labor. There is something else besides hard work, or hand work, to be done on the larm to make it what it might to be, and to derive the profit which it may yield. .head work is just as impor tant as hand work. The former in times past was generally undervalu ed, but the present race of farmers have learned that intelligent farming is just as necessary as industrious farming ; that hi order to make the most of his pursuit and to reap the fall beenifit of his labor, every man . who has a taraLtOnanagemustknow ' the character of la farm, the nature of the soils, the crops that are best adapted to his lands, and the proper times and methods for putting in his crops and taking care of them. Much knowledge may be obtained from the papers and magazines that are devoted to the subject of agricul ture, and every farmer should • take at least one good agricultural paper without regard to a cost ; much information may be derived from books, and every farmer should have , his agricultural library and should make good• use of it ; but in addition to all these sources of knOwledge, each one should study his owls farm, become thoroughly acquainted with it, just as he does with the disposi tion and capabilities of his horses.— This practical knowledge cannot be obtained from books or papers al though it may be found by an appli cation of what is read to one's own • observation and experience. We *ould recommend -to every one who has a piece of ground to tin; however large or wall, to study graphy thoroughly ; to make an accurate map of the whole by fields and tracts ; to mark' down the character of each portion, and to fix upon the crops that are best adapted to each, and their modes of --- tillage which each field or tract requires. This will enable him to enter upon another season with a methodical course of farming, which • will be fir more satisfactory and profitable than the haphazard, tin- - varying course which so many pur sue from year to year. Such a course will afford ample room for reading and comparison and reflection daring the - coming winter, and we are sure will tell upon the fruits of another year's labor. One of the great benefits which we anticipate in the establishment of Agricultaral Colleges, and agricultat ral departments or . studies of our school, is the promotion of such ,a course of intelligent 'farming. We do expect .*t our young men will finish their studies in graduating at these institutions, .but that they will lm prepared to enter upon a career of practical labor, combined with, con• .tinned study, which will greatly ele ite va e profession or employment , .1 of farming by infusing into it more 1 intelligence. This should not be left altogether to the young men, but every farmer should improve ,the advantages which are afforded at the present day for improvement in hia VircoLe-Mget. Exam—Chemist and physiologists maintain that the very finely bolted and white flour which is so much sought after, is far less nutritious than what is termed middlings, or unbolted flour. The most nutritious ingredients of the grain.—the wheat phosphates and gloten,—are removed _ to obtain the desired wbiteness.
