Deep Fall Ploughing.
At the meeting of the Massachm
'tette State Board of Agriculture,
last winter, the matter of fall plough
ing was fully . discussed, and the
weight of opinion decidedly seemed
in favor of deep ploughing of heavy
lauds. Mr. Hubbard, of Brimfield,
found in his experience in the culti
vation of cntAiin crops, - that the fall
is the best time to plough the ground;
ho thought that all will concede the
fact, that the land, if it is heavy,
cloyed soil, can be worked mach
earlier in the spring by putting the
manure on,and ploughing it in,in.the
fall. He did not care bow soon it is
put on after the crop is taken off ;
his advice was to "spread it on
. and,
plough it in ; and so far as my expe
nence goes, I haie got a beter crop
that way than by allowing the land
to remain . until spring, and - theri
putting the manure on and then
ploughing it in."
Mr. Ward,of Monson,Ahought that
much depends - upon the ground to be
ploughed, whether it is ploughed in
the fall. "If you have a tough, hard
piece of ground that you desire to
break up , it is better to plough
in the fall ; the frost has consid
erable effect upon the hard soil,
and I do not think there is any great
loss by the wind blowing off the
surface soil. I think a light soil may
as well be ploughed in the spring as
in the fall."
Mr. Thatcher, of Leo, in speaking
of deep ploughing in describing a
subsoil attachment for a plough said:
We arc now using in southern Berk
shire; a plough which" turns over the
sod from six to seven inches, with a
subsoil attachment running from
two to four inches, which still does
net lift the virgin soil the first year
to the. surface. This attachment
running behind the mould-board to
the depth of four inches, usually stirs
the whole width of the furrow to that
depth after we have turned over the'
sod. Our idea is that by loosening
the subsoil by this attachment, we
enable the rains to soak down
through, which they 'would not do,
our subsoil being clay, (which will
nut take in water unless the earth
was loosened), and out corn roots
run down there to get their moisture.
The effect of the manure is felt there;
and the second year, when we come
to plough up again after this stirring
of the subsoil, we drop our ploughs
down and throw up part of it. I
think we certainly in our northern
country derive a benefit by stirring
the soil the first year, and very great
bt nefit without lifting it to the stir
' face, and-then lifting it to , the Sur
face and mixinc , in the succeeding
ploughing. I have in my mind a six
- acre piece, which would not half
feed a cow through the season. We
could not get more than four or five
inches of soil before we came to a
hard clay soil, that retained the wa
ter upon it, making± the land cold,
backward and sour. After ditching
that land; and putting in some under
( which of course, benefitted
it, Without ploughing), we commenc
ed ploughing this land in this way
to get a deeper soil ; not using the
1 - '7 - subsoil attachment t hat time,becanse
we did not have it, butt:sing a coma
mon plough, following the furrow
afterwards, and lifting one or two
- inches at a time. I am speaking
within bounds when I say that the
second year, the crop of corn paid
_twice over the labor of ditching and
double ploughing. It is as good a
piece of land now, I think, as can be
found in the town of Leo."
Deep, ploughing of heavy lands,
then, with clayey subsoils is to be
recommended in autumn, and a
plough which turns the sod arid lifts
and breaks the subsoil permitting it
to fall back into its place, without
_bringing it to the surface, is the im
plement which seems moat desirable.
—Mass. Ploughman.
GLEANINGS.
Is is said the best strawberry
plants come from the third and fourth
sets of runners, and that the first and
second sets should be cut off.
An orchard in Massachusetts which
Las been used as a hog pasture for
twenty years, has never failed . to
produce a fine crop of fruit. A worm
eaten apple is a rarity in that orch
ard.
The average life of a mowing
machine is set down at five years ;

The Farmers' Club of the American
Institute has resolved that the selling
of common rhubarb, or pie-plant, in
its different varieties,as a wineplant,
is an attempt to deceive and defraud
the public.
Animals of all kinds fatten more
rapidly in dimly lighted places than
when exposed to the full light of day.
This is especially the case with fowls.
Ilreeding stock, however, especially
huraes, should have light.
.The Germantown Telegraph says :
"In planting new strawberry beds,it
is much better to delay the planting
until September than to use small or
feeble plants. Strong, vigorous
plants will soon catch up to and pass
the weaker ones,- and give a fuller
crop the following season. This
should be remembered."
Rhubarb requires a deeply tilled
Stud eery rich Soil to afford's supply
of nutriment eufficient to enable it to
produce the immense crop of large
succulent leaves which are removed
from it in the season. The leaves
should not be taken off in August or
September, and a good top dressing
of manure - should be given before
winter.
Herbaceous plants, as soon as they
haysidotie flowering, may be propa
gated by cuttings. These should be
planted in a cold frame, in a mixture
of sand and loam, and kept shaded
until the roots have formed. They
may be grown in a rich open border,
if they are shaded -and watered and
kept in darkness, until the roots have
struck. ' .
Youatt, in his book entitled "The
Horse," says this animal will never
drink bard water if soft is within his
reach ; that he will leave clear trans
parent hard water for a pool or
stream of soft even though the latter
be discolored with mud. Very cold
water from the well will make the
hair raise up and not unfrequently
cause an attack of the gripes.
correspondent of. the //orticullu
rist says that alter trying numerous
experiments with various applica
tions for destroying the borer, and
preventing a renewal of the attacks
of the insect,Le found nothing so effec
tual as the waste water from the salt
work; commonly called "mother wa
ter," or 'bitter water." Ho applies
it at various intervals from June till
August, putting about one pint of
the liquid about the base af each tree.
