g; t, gritulturat. Fall Oare for Gardena We have more than once , spoken of the tendency which so often pre vails among farmers to neglect prop yr attention to their gardens .at all seasons of the year.. The farm ap• ways so much more important in the extent of its productions, and in the amount of labor required to keep it in propelcondition, that the household part of the grounds, the garden, is too often left to ;take care of itself, er leit to the care of those who are , unable to work it properly. In the season of planting, the comparatively trifling work that is required to make a.dood garden is withheld, on the. plea that there W more pressing work in the field. The farmer who acts on this principle does- an injury to him self and to his , family, and to his friends ; for nothing contributes more to the supply and the comfort of the social board than a produtive garden. It may be made almost half the sup• port of a family, and,t with small fruits, its roots and its vegetables of every description, it adds immensely to the good cheer of a country.home. On the supposition that this part of a farmer's duty has not been neg lected at the propor season for raising the.crops, we would remind Our read . rs that the time is at hand when the fruits of such labor are to be cared for. And.many, of our readers have no other farm than their garden, so that it. stands them in hand to reap the advantage of their, summer toil by carefully gathering and storing the product.' The value of all kinds of vegetables depends, in a great measure in the condition in .which they are gathered and stored away. Many garden roots will not require to be taken up before thulclose of the month, and•some of thud until Octe• bur, but we give these timely hints and would especially advise all who have such crops to store, to have place , s provided for them in season, that they may not suffer by being left out too long. After ail the crops are gathered, the garden itself should be put in complete order ; all weeds and use let's bushes removed, and everything made ready fer another season. This • will both invites and facilitates labor the spring. Autumn Ploughing• A correspondent sums up the more prominent advantages to be derived frEm turning ov-er the soil in autumn, nyder the following heads ; 1. August and September is a good time to turn over bound-out sod land, and manure and re-aced it at once to gins-, obtaiuitig a crop of hay the following season. 2. October and November is an xc•elk•nt time to break up sod land for planting the follUwing spring. 3. The weather is then cool and tracing, and the team strong and hearty for the work; while the weath er in the spring is more relaxing and team less able ; and spring work be ing always hurrying, it saves tim, to dispateli as much of the ploughing po,sible during the previous au • 4 Sod hind broken up late in au turon, will be quite free from growing gras, the folk) wing spring ; the roots' of the late forerturned .sward being t , o generally killed by the immediate ly i-ucceediug winter that not much cirass will really start in• the spring 5. The frosts of winter disintegrate the ploughed laud, so that it really crumbles in fine particles in spring, and a deep, mellow seed-bed is easily made. The chemical changes and moditicatieus resulting from atmos pl,eiie action during the winter, de .<•lop -latent - fertility in the upturned t;irrt,wa, which, together with, the ti_te:lowing influences, materially in crease the crop. G. Most kinds of insects are either wholly destroyed,or theirdepredations materially checked, by late fall ploughing, especially the common bate grub and the cut worm. 7. Corn stubble land may be,'plough late iu the fall, and thus be ready for very early sawing in spring, therefore going far to insure a good catch of grass ; the roots of the new :ccd getting hold well, or being well established, before -the .droughs o uniniur come on. 7 • S. A great deal of land needs deep ploughing than has generally been i.ractieed. When the subsoil is fine grained, and unctuous, and close, or. %Acre there is a hard pan of good quality, deep ploughing may be at ~nee resorted to, with decided advan tage. Where the subsoil is poorer, th. ploughing may still be advanta geously deepened Ly degrees, say an inch at each breaking up., l But in by far a majority of cases, deep plough ing may be practiced at once—indeed is may be the rule, with safety, whilc shallow ploughing may be the excel,- Lon Plough; say nine, ten, eleven or twelve inches in November. The subsoil turned op wig grow several shades darker by spring. The frosts and atmospheric influences of winter will mellow the soil. 'The:inorganic elements and all latent fertility will be Made more active for benefiting the crop. In spring 'spread the ma nure and plough it in or otherwise work it in or mingle it with the soil to the depth, say of four inches, or a little more of leis, and youlbave the very best attainable conditions for realizing good crops. Deep plough ing may thus be practiced than would at all times be safe or expedient, if the ploughing is delayed till spring. —13 , 140 n Courier. WEIGHT OF MILK.-W. S. Grow writes to the Mass. Ploughman in re gard to the weight of milk from different cows : "I have lately meas ured and 'weighed one quart each from seventeen cows ;* all but one weighed just two pounds only. My cows.have given milk from fifteen down to twd mouths : the one whose milk weighed but two pounds has given milk about one year ; the last part of September last she gave six teen quaff per day. One milking was set and skimmed, and the cream from it made iu ten minutes one ndund of as good butter as I ever saw ; the buttermilk was . all out. before salting. Opening an old bOok iu which 'kept some_initintes in 1858, when I was making butter and se lecting cows for that purpose, I find that on the 19th of September I weighed and set separakey„...the milk of,some young cows ; Wn one the milk weighed six pounds andl two ounces ; the butter six and one half ounces ; another six pounds of milk, eight ounces of butter ; the third seven pounds and six ounces of milk, eight ounces of butter ; fourth, eleven pounds and twelve ounces of milk, twelve ounces of butter; the above statements are on paper and I know them to be correct."
