The GOULD whose arrest and wounding, we noticed last week, was taken to Troy, and an examination was gone through with without identifying him as the thief, though, from his own confession he seems to belong to a gang of criminals who operate in the eastern part of the coun ty, and in Tioga county, N. We understand that upon his arrival at Elmira, he was again arrested by the Sheriff and there made a confession implicating several of the gang. He indicated the whereabouts of the missing horses, and the owner has proceeded after them. BECITENENT AT GREAT BEND.—An excitement prevails at Great Bend, Pa., in consequence of the death of a man named Lamm Farrow, about 6 e'clock Sunday eve rdng, under circumstances that lead to the belief that he was poisoned. The following communication is a serious attempt to disprove several Of his assertions which in the judgment of the writer were calculated to bring Canton into disrepnta : CArrrox, /m 8.15, 1868 . Enron ItEroarza—Dear f4r : For a long time the good people of this place have quietly endured the petty annoyance aris ing from, the exaggerationainnd misstate ments of your correspondent bailing frt!im Canton, and signing himself LN. 0. is e had hoped that the gag vihich produces these intermittent ebullitinitit,'would after' a time pass off, and that their author woild thereupon subside into, that quiescent state which his disordered condi tion of his im agination seems most urgently to requirte ; but the article published - `in your lastisine induces the belief that ihene hopes were not well founded, and that he gas maybe furnished from an inexhautilible reservciir. Therefore, feeling deeply interested in the welfare and prosperity of oat beautiful 4 1 - il . lage, and believing that misrepresentati on and falsehood can dons only harm, we feel in duty bound to remonstrate against the publication of such trash in!the columns of your otherwise excellent paper. The article above referred to begins lay pulling the "Famous Mineral Springs of Canton,'-',which the vriter ays are " easy of access by driving a, milk) over a good road." These "Famous Mineral Springs" consist of a single spring tihout two miles north of this villag% and near the railroad, and is only accessible by passing over a very rough road. This reminds us of. the " Gillett Lake " mentioned in a former coht munication by the- same writer, and des cribed by him as a beautiful sheet of water two miles in length by one mile-in breadth. That Lake is a dirty frog pond about three fourths of a mile long by less than half a mile wide. But these harmliss " Mqn ohausenisms " together with a great dal more " spread eagle hifaluin," we shoal& have allowed to pass unnoticed, had not the writer made some more mportant Mitt statements which some of yonr readers nitty pelieve. He. says, " PolitiCally, I beliiive our bormigh has recently ''undergone some change, the democrats claiming to be able to poll 45 votes, when formerly they could claim but 7." This statement is calculated to mislead and give a wrong; impressioni— Quite a number of Democrats have recent ly come into our place an' the vote wilOie thereby increased, but that they will le able to poll 45 votes at our next election I think none of them expect I pass next to notice the New School House clause',— He says again, " Preparations for erecting a new school house early in the spring, are going forward. The preparations con4ist in collecting a per capita pm of seven dol lars, and three per cent.' on property.l— again ho exhibits his usual inaccur4. The tax levied is ono and One-half per ceit. on the valuation, and the house, the Direc tors estimate, will cost from thrre• to four . thousand dollars, instead Of eight thohs and as he asserts, Again he says, " the Society for the prim. ecntion of Temperance is ria a languishing condition." This informatkin he tells you he received " . corifidentially from a shining light of the order." He dOeS not choose, to inform your readers that h was at one time connected with this society. Nor doesihe state why he has now to get his informa tion in regard to it at se4ond hand. y lhe laws of the Order prohibit`me from di, B ing these secrets, and I will itherefore only say that the Society to whibli he refers; is Canton Lodge, No. 498, L of G. These Machines are superior to all others for falai* useaor the following reasons : They sew with two threads .slieect from the spoofs, and •require n: rewindidg. They are moreily understood and used, and less liable to d erangement, than other ma chinta. They are capabe ,of executing perfect_y, without change of than a much greater variety of work than other machines. The stitch made by these machines is much more firm, eliatic, rd durable, especially upon articles which requ re'to be washed and ironed, than any other &tit h. This stitch, owing to the manner in which the under thread Is nnwronght, is much the moat plump and beautiful Li • use, and retains this plumpness and beauty, even upon articles 'frequently washed and hoc ed(until they are worn out. The Mractare of the seam Ls such, that, tho' It be cut or broken at intervals of only a few stitches, it will neither open, run, nor ravel, but remains firm and durable. Unlike other machines, thele fasten both ends of the seam by their, own operation. With these machines. While silk is used upon the right or, facealde of the seam, cotton may be used upon the other -side without lessening the strength or durability of the seam. This can be dons °alio othe r machine, and lan great saving upon all attic stitched or made np with silk. , These maebines,Jaaddition to their superior merits u Instruments for sewing, execute the most beautiful and permanent sembroldery and ornamental work.
