-id al VlNUnir4 1 1 , - thumper Pronise. The summer pruning of grape vines c pmmetioee with the first inch of growth; and if then performa, and carefully' continued during the entire season, •we should hear nothing of injury attended to its practice, nor could we find an opponent thereto.— It is by rubbing away at once all buds, which, if left, would grow use less wood—it is 'by carefully just nipping the end of a shoot and direct ing its energies idto more rapid and ":perfect developedient of the wood and leaves already formed, that we can summer 'prime, guiding the supply of food to f the sources we de sire expanded ; and yet. our most strenuous opponent can find no point of attack • for in this course we have never rob bed the vine of any amount of expended food, or by the destruc tion of a single leaf or twig sent a vibrating thrill of disease toward the root. It is already time to be about the -work, and in many sections perhaps long, past the time. AccordinF to the mode of training and winter• pruning, seek now to guide the sap and Frowth into canes for next year's fruiting, and also into strong and healty leaves on those•already acting with fruit, carefully and severely rubbing out all buds or young shoots that tend to crowd the vine with foliage and at the ,stime time extraot supply from the roots. The simplest, and we believe the best method, is that of renewal canes from the ground yearly ; and the vine should .now be carefully studied, to judge of its ca pacity to fruit another season or two, three or more canes, and such should be left and carefully guarded noteven a laternal touch during the season— Imt all others should be.robbed out and kept out. rimers Moe Gnu& Put into some fireproof vessel one fortrtkof pound of lsrd,or soft grease like lard . one-fourth of a pound of tallow—beef or mutton tallow—one fourth °fg pound of beeswax ; half a pint of linseed oil, three or four table spoonful of lampbtack, and a peice of pulverized gum camphor ae larg as a hen's egg. Melt the ingredients over a slow fire, and stir them thoroughly after they are melted. Never heat so Lot auto make it foil. Soft grease which has salt in will not injure kinther. Now have the leather warm, aid warm t.e grease, not ea that it will flow, but have it to soft that it may be applied with a brush." Should the leather seem to need it, give the shoes or boots an oiling , oecasionally. It is not best to dry the shoe grease in before the fire, but allow it to re main on the eurface of the leather.— A light coat of this kind . of grease mill exclude the water, even if boots • are exposed to wet all day. This shoe grease will not injure leather- by rendering it hard and inelastic.— When a man's boots are exposed to wet all day,he should wash them clean at night, hang them in the kitchen, where the leather will dry gradually, and put on a little grease every morning. It is far better to grease I a little often than to grease bounti fully every ten , or twelve days. Lea ther should not be allowed to become very dry before gfeasing. Always apply the grease as soon as the lea ther is almost dry - then the leather will be mellow, and never become hard. Nothing injures boots Or shoes more than to set them aside to dry when covered with dirt. Keep boots and hhoes always away flew the fire where they are, liable to be heated. }hating leather injures it. VIII Railroads do for Farmers To haul' 40 bushels of corn 50 miles on a wagon would cost at least $l2 for team and driver and expenses.— A railroad would transport 'it for $4 at most. Allowing an average of 40 bushels per acre, the crop wopld be worth $8 more per acreor IS per cent. on $lOO. As the relative advantage is about the same for other crops,it is ylear that a railroad gaming through a town would add $llO per acre to the value of the farms. A town 10 miles square contains 64,000 acres`. An increase of $lOO per acre is equal to $6,400,000, or enough to build 200 miles of railroad, even if it cost $32,- 000 per mile. But 200 miles of rail road would extend through twenty towns ten miles square, and cost but $lO per acre if taxed , upon the land. These figures are given mere ly as an illustration. If the farmers had taxed theinselves to build all the railroads in the country, and give them away to the companies that would stock and run them, the pres ent increased value of their lands would have well repaid all the Outlay. —American Agriculturist. The Borst in Peach Tree& °- Alvriter in the Southern Planter says : "I once heard of a lady whose husband had planted a peach orchard with a view of making brandy.— She feared that be might become a drunkard, and determined to kill his trees. To effect this, she secretly poured scalding water around the roots, and to her great surprise the 'trees did not • die, but produced an extra crop of peaches. The scalding water killed the worms, but was not sufficient to kill the trees. At first I adopted this practice very cautiously, but now without fear I pursue Early each spring, I scrape around the trees with a large knife on the morning -of washing-day. = When the washing is done, I teke buckets full of boiling soda into the orchard, and dash theresust where the trunks ` join the ground . In this way thous ands of little worms are scalded to death. Lastly, I apply unleached ashes to the trees. After an experi- ence of several years, I confidently reccommend this practice," DAIRY PRODUCTS.—Many Americans shave been astonished at the millions of pounds of, American cheese ship ;pea to England, both for consumption '.here and re-shipment with English labels to this country. Moat of it is from New York State. But it will surprise people more to know-of the amount of butter arusuallyi made in that State. The Agricultural Socie ty's report for 1866 shows a range of from 85,000,000 to 90,000,000 pounds of butter produced here every year, and yet the - demand of the cities has to be supplied largely from Ohio, Peunsylvanta, and other dairy States. The quantity of milk sold has increas ed from .20,000,000 to 29,000,000 gal lons within ten years, and the cheese from 38,000,000 to 72,000,000 pounds within the same time; while rthe but .ter production has fallen oft: Because • New York' has n Annie* market for her cheese, she should not neglect her home market ! Tor butter. Large as the production is, it should be larger, and easily could be. ~a!% Pttg. - Notius, N OTIOE IN BA If y . - T4it ti , That On the Mb alio!
