Hoed: Plops.
Iloed crops are ;le most costly in
-Taber of any whiclilhe farmer grows.
Therefore, they should •be the most.
p, et - liable. The greate,t, • difficulty
%%Welt the homer in his country has
to camtend•with,, in order to•make his
business profitable, is the price of
tabor; and,aa he is obliged to bestow
u great deal on his hoed. crops, he
should take eare, by judicious man
°gement and use of the praduets, to
Make this outlay of capital remuner
ative. , How to_ do thie.shonld be a
subject of much thought.
Corn and potatoes 'are the most
largely grown and iirpo4ant of this
class of products. One rule which
will apply to both, which the wise
farmer will act upon, is .b.) obtain as
large a yield as posible from each
acre planted. This will diminish the
amount of labor iu proportion to the
product obtained. Every bushel will,.
therefore, cost -less than when the•
yield is small. The next impudent
point is •to tl.t. the best return for the
crop. As corn is .the great reliance
of the stock feeder-in this country,
and as Manure from stock is essenti
al to'grow - continued large crops,it is
obvious that skillful feeding tustock
is the reinneerative disposal that can
be made of the corn crop. Hence,
,good breeds,ample slielter,and proper
care, are indispensable adjunots. In
labtx has cost you too much,
r, solve to pl ai t less grouod;but raise
mole per acre. This can easily be
duet: if yon will only set about it:—
. Next, determine that your corn shall
produce more pounds of meet per
bushel than heretofore. This
_vim can
accomplish by a timely and jelicions
selc.i2!iee of improviA breeds ofetock,
and more skill employed in handling
them. No farmer should be satisfied
if he cato , ot improve every year on
hir part method. Thought and ene-r
-;.:y applied to business will',do this. _
• The potato crop is always sold for
. cash, and thus produces no manure
for the ho,ci. For this reason, it is a
. yery exhausting crop, and no farmer
va n persist long in growing it largely
without imperoviahing his land. On
account of their bnik,potatoes cannot
gron profitably a great distance
(em market. On the right sort of
laud, and near market, they usually
produce a good return of money per
:vrc ; and potate growers should de
vine part of the proceeds of the crop
towards the purchasing of manure to
renovate the land. Plant less,manure
more, and your labor will bring great
ter profit.R.ural New larker..
Bummer Care of - Mitch Cows,
Much has been said and written up.
on summer feeding or soiling,compar
t•d with pasturing. llere,as in many
things which relate to agriculture,no
definite rule can be given. We must
be guided by the condition ot the soil,
location and other contingences. In
scctious where natural pasture lands
are scarce, or where land' is valued
at a high price and is easily cultivat
ed, the advantages of soiling can
hardly be over estimated ;. while for
the larger portion of New England it'
would not be economy to 'adopt this
y te in to any great extent. Yet I
think:there are few, if any,dairymen,
who would nut find it to their advau
tagelo cultivate a portion of green
f, tiftla, to keep up the flow of milk
duritig the usually warm and dry
months of August and September.—
As food for soiling I would recom-
mood mainly, clover, oats and corn.
A few feeds of early sowed rye may
be 1180 to advantage Nom the - 10th
lif May.. This soon becomes woody
and unpalutable,aud is recommended
only for green feed. GI een.clover,on
rich land, will be fit to cat about the
20th of May,and will hold good until
the piddle . of ;June. Oats should be
sown early iu'April and again about
the first of May, at the rate of four
bushels to the acre. This will keep
good tho supply from June 15th till,
July 15th. - By this timo,corn planted
the/first week in May should be fit to
cut. The'planting should be continued
at intervals of two weeks, until-the
I nth of July. Such a succession as
this will afford
. a regular supply of
succulent food until the first of Octo
ber. The clover may be cut several
(hues, either for summer or winter
use, or the soil may be inverted and
corn planted upon the same ground,
which is cleared previonetto the 10th
of July, should be used for growing
Swedish turnips. These I would sow
in drills 30 inches apart, manuring iii
the drill, either with fresh manure
from the cow sheds, with compost, or
with special fertilisers. The latter I
use and recommend only when the
supply of the - former fails to be equal
to t 1 demand. All the ground clear
ed after the sowing of sweeds and
previous to the 10th of August 4
would plow and sow to the common
'Jr English turnip, sowing the seed
broadcast
The quantity of land appropriated
fur soiling will vary according to the
extent to which it is desired to pur
sue the system. One-fourth of au
acre ti, each full grown animal, appro•
priated in the way indicated, will
produce au astquishing amount of the
best feed for dairy cows, _besides
greatly enhancing the amount of val
uable manure.—.P. Stedman.
Wouros u Snur.--Take thb leaves
or the elder tree and make a strong
decoction, and wash •the parts affect
.l two or three times a day, end you
will not be troubled with flies or
worms. It also removes fever from
the wound, and is healing.
DIARREICE IN CATTLE.—Take half a
pint of bran and pour boiling water
ion it, and _cover with a thick cloth un
til nearly cool ; then strain and give .
\the tea to the afflicted animal. Two or
three doses are sure to cure —Ru
ral American.
COSTIVENESS IN SIIEEP.—Two table
bpoonfuls of cPstor oil every twelve
hours. Or give One ounce emom
salts. This may 'be assisted by an
injection of warm water, weak suds
and molasses.
RINGESONE.-Aiiz equal parts of Ur
pentine and lamp oil,and apply to the
part affected night and morning,ntb-
Ling it well into the hair around the

SCOCRS IN Hoses. --Pot one pint of

Scowls Sul:sr.—A pint of new
milk, thickened with wheat flonr.—
