when armed treason sought the overthroW
of our free institutions—virieo, had so, „„ geiterft
ously and bravely tarried that ' tag from
Pennsylvania to the Gulf,. mauling' Ptiva,
Lions and encountering dangers, to which
many a brave man imodambed and found
beneath the sod a relief from the horrors of
rebel prisons,or from the agonies of wounds
inflicted by rebel - hands.
A grateful nation whilst it honors the br
ing heroes, mourns in,sincere arid deep.frilt
sorrow over the brave men who sleep be.
neath the turf on their native hills, or are
buried in far-off Southern • graves. Their
memory is a legacy left to those Who mi..'
• vied to enjoy We' blessings of free institu
tions, seemed by their - bravery and perpet
uated by the sacrifice of their lives. To
~thein most emphatically may be applied
the words of Cowin :
now sleep the brave who sink to rest'
By all their country's wishes blest?
When Spring with dewy fingers cold
Returns to deck their hallowed mould,
She there shall dress a sweeter sod,
Than Fancy's feet have ever trod.
By fairy hands their lawn is rung.
By forms unseen their dirge is sung ;
There Honor comes a pilgrim gray,
To bless the turf that wraps their clay,
And Freedom shall awhile repair,
— To dwell a weeping hermit there.
The order, of Oan. LOCLiN woke a response
in every generous and loyal heett.r The
members of Post No. 68, animated brit feel
ing of respect for their departed brethren,
set about carrying into effect the recom

and energy, The Order of Exercises for

who had participated in the severest battles
of the war, some 01 whom bear upon their

we revere the memory of those who sleep
with the dead we honor the living heroes,
and many a hat was lifted in respect for
them as they marched once more in line,
with their comrades.
The procession passed up Main St., to
7 _Chestnut St., and thence to William St.,
where it was joined by twenty-two young
girls, who had been selected to decorate
the graves of the dead, bearing wreaths,
and baskets of flowers; and presenting an
attractive andlovely sight. Having reach
