JIPRUIG WORK.
The season has been soezeeeding
. ty backward inthis region of country,
(the thermometer, night after night
in April, falling several degrees be
lote.the freezing point,) the opening
of the spring will, in all probability
be very sudden, and a great crowd of
work will be pressed into. narrow
compass of time. Many or the inter
• eats of the farmer-swill be likely to
-stiffen ° owing to unusual pressure
but a--.greater,advatitage may be' gain
l ed if each-one will lay out his work
and do ICsystematically, .„Many per
sons, when they have the most to do,
actually' do the least. They are
so overwhelmed by the amount that
is obe ileme, all of which seems to be
"equally urgent, that they are really
I. paralyzed, and have no resolution to
( do anything first.. This is a common.
result of a great pressure in all kinds
of business, where there is a variety
of work. The best way,therefore,for
the farmer at such a time is, to con
sider what there is to be done, what
needs attention first, and then to go
. about it systematically nutillthe whole
is accomplished ; or at least as much
as can be. - • -
Every, onc — ivh9: - lias not fairly got
into his spring work, and who is not
driving, it..before him,should sit down
the very first evening and note down
upon a sheet of paper alt that he
thinks -ought to be done upon his
farm,or in his garden, within the next
three or four weeks. - Then let him
look over his list of work, of crops-to
be put in, &c., &c. ' and decide what
demands attention first,and what may
be put•uff with the least injury. Let
him have his programme, made out in
due order,aud the very next-morning
let-him begin at the headset' his list
and do that thing first and thoroughly.
.• Then, the next day, or as soon as the
(irk matter is attended to,let him take
-- the second,and go on through the list;
but:let no time be lost vacillating be
' tween one thing and another, or in go
ing back and forth from one thing to
another. There is nothing like system,
thorough system, in getting through
' any business. It will — accomplish
wonders. -
1 There are, some things which many
farmers are apt to consider essential
\to be done early that are not so
important. Some crops must be put
in early in order to give them a fair
• start and to take 'advantage of the
season; bat it is not so with all.
is:no great'gain, for instance,
in the early planting of corn s unless
in an extraordinary early and warm,
season, but rather a loss of time - and
of yield: Cold weather is exceedingly
unfriendly to Indian corn, and it is
much better to keep the'seed warm
hi the house or in the crib than to put
it into the ground before that be
• comes warm and dry. Corn does near
ly all 'its growing in this latitude be ,
tween the middle ofJune:andltie first
or the middle of August, and at the
close of the season there will not or
dinarily be three days' difference be
, - tween that planted on the Ist of May
,and that planted on the Ist of June.
A selectioa can therefore be made
between the crops to be attended to
first, and every one shouldVo it be-
Tore, gettin. , into his work and carry it
on systematically. We merely throw
out these suggesions in order to se
- care system without going into par
ticulars. Each one can arrange the
particulars for himself according to
his own needs.
ToltAroEs—Tomato plants may
now be transplanted irom the hot-bed '
at any time. They should be set firm
ly in the soil, which should be well
manured ; and fur the first week or
two, should the weather be warm, be
protected against the sun during four
bourn of the day. If the nights be
cool or - frost threatened, they should
be covered in some way—old news-,
papers, with stones of clods at the
corners, arc good as anything—for
the first two weeks. Mulching with
grass and frequent stirring of the
soil have an assuring effect in prods
. ring an abundant crop.
Some people allow the vines to run
over the ground entirely, and admit
that they will produce as greatly this
way ae perhaps any other;but,coming
in contact with the soil, their flavor
is destroyed and they become insipid
and worthless. Oar mode is to"bush"

FAIIILY Conn.—The first planting
yf corn—the sooner put in now the
better—is Adams' Early Eitri,which
can be found at most of our seed
stoics; It is a very sure crop, and
although it is not a sweet or sugar
corn, so-called, it; comes ten days to
two weeks earlier than any sugar
corn worth cultivating, and is deli
cate and :excellent. Bylthe ,first of
May plant your second crop. This
should be Stowell's Evergreen, and
f 01 1 ,4 it up every two weeks with
another • planting, 'making at least
five in all.
There are various other sugar corns
than that mentioned and which we
prcfcre, and some of them are dclioi•
ous,and planted as a choice over the
Evergreen. AS a rule it is better to
get - new seed every year and at most
most not to plant from the crop rais
ed'oftener than once, otherwise both
the stalks and the:ears become dwarf
ed and are not so productive.
Five plantings, as recommended,
will furnish a supply every day until,
the froat takes the flavor out in Oc
to ber.—Germasloum Telegraph.
CORN MEAL FOR CONCB-11e state
ment is often made through'the agri
cultural press, that corn meal i , s the
best feed for cows as milk producer.
Why this Should be repeated when
the experience. of almost every far
mer is to the contrary,we cannot tell,
unless it be for the
_reason that corn
meal is the best gisin so good for
keeping up animal beat, and produc
ing flesh and fat, and it is used in
winter by most dairymen for this pur
pose ; but as a milk prodtkeir it is
the poorest grain that can be given.
Oat meal and wheat ban are far an
, perior. These statements are based
upon actual exper, iment and the ex
perience of many ,farmers.—Ohio
Farmer.

reasons why clover and timothy seed
should be sewn together: First the
