EITESIT OF SOIL UPON POTATOES.

has been applied for mulching, and

rotten when, the , potatoes were
grown. This was vegetable manure,
and made the difference between the
two crops. -
There is an ther element of great
value in the potato Crop; this is lime.
It is probably better than anything

For feeding purposes, a rank growth ' 1

The soil should nut only be looser,

When cornstalks, straw and ordure
of animals Are all trod firmly during
the winter midi spring, air is effectu
ally excluded, and the material will
not rot until it has been forked over,
wereit to stand there a year or
Putre. If it is * loosened- up so that
the air tireolate among it the entire
Mass will decay in a few' weeks, so
that will be easy to pitch and
splead it. Now, the most expedi-
Mw manner of pitching manure up
clean from {he bottom, is tot do the
*water portion of it with a horse
fork. Set up three hog poles as for
pitching hay on a round stack, at.d
teak,. a hole down to. 1.!,e bottom of
the manure qrSt then thrust the
tines of the horse-fork under the ma
nerv, awl torn it up in large rolls,
and tear it to pieces with hand-forks.
liort;e-forks are of great service
. where the manure is very lone Al
..- tfr it has rotted, a. man, or two men,
Min pitch much faster by hand If
barnyard manure remains in the yard
all summer, it should always be
_Forked °Ver to facilitate the decay of
cornstalks and coarse straw. Bat
it should be protected_ from , rain.—
.Soifie farmers pitch the long manure
iu the wa ;on with horse-forks. But
1 never-could conceive that-tiwprac

will not hold what a horse is capa

CRICK EN PEED.—We know of noth
ing better for your* chickens or tur
keys than hard-boiled • eggs chopped
fine, and fed with cracked corn and
wheat. The first few weeks is the
most critical time with them, and
they need animal food in some form,
especially in' the early spring, before
grubs and insects are plenty. We
have fed raw liver, chopped fine,
With advantage. A change ot„, food
is desirable. Wheat and barley
'steeped in milk,toasled bread crumbs
and hominy, are excellent. They
should be fed as often as five timed
