Moms Munro= Itsroriss l—For
number of years I hays seen the ne.
cessity of a few hints to farmers, on
the subject of preparing - wool for the
carding machine. Many times the
carder hi- censured for making bad
rolls, when in fact be is not at all to
blame ;-_ . the real caw* being, that
the wool had not been thoroughly
washed,or perhaps greased too much.
A word or two in regard to selecting
wool for the machine, may not be
amiss. I think farmers will find it
more profitable to select a minion
grade, which is `always lighter when
it is shorn from the cheep ; and win
sequently will not Wink so much in
cleansing, and dispose of the finer
grades to buyers. But very few cus
tom shops are prepared with ma.
, chines to do justice to. finer grades
'than' half or threequarter blood me
rino ; and not theu, uniess it has been
thoroughly oksansed.
I will venture a few suggestions,
which I trust will be 'of . use to the
farming community, and . I know it
• will be if thq- will try the experi
ment. In the first place, the fleece
should be spread out and the coarse
skirting taken arand-kerpt by Itself ;
then the body of the fleece should be
sorted into two qualities, the finer
over the shoulders and along the
*a& for the filling, and the, coarser
for the warp. lam aware thatmany
of my elderly 'lady friends may not
at first agree with me in chooshig
the fine quality for the filling, but I
have found by nearly twenty years
experiende In the manufacturing busi
ness, that the cloth will appear much
finer, as the. dress comes a lm ost alto.
gether on the filling, and will wear
just as long. It is a -fact that all
manufacturers of woolen goods adopt
this course. _
If it is not the intentionio make it
into cloth, wool will, card and spin
much better that is nearly of the
same quality;it is sorted,put it
into a tub partly filled with a warm
suds made of so water,a little soap,
(if fine wool, a little \ salt to cut the
rum) and plenty of chamber lye, lot
it remain from twenty minutes• to
hjf an hour, then take it oat and
rinse in cold Water and spread in the
shade to dry, never in_ the sun, as it
makes the wool hard and oonsequent
ly requires much more grease. It is
much better that wool should not be
greased until it can be carded, as it
becomes-gummy by laying In a warm
room ; therefore it is the best way
to send the grease-in an old dish with
the wool, about one pound to eight or
ten,as the carder had much better be
to the trouble of melting and putting
it on, than to card it after it had lam
a long time in-the grease. The best
grease farmers usually have by far
is fresh batter, next - is fresh lard or
lard oil, but never use beech-nut oil
or woodchuck grease, as it - soon be
comes very gummy.
A few words in regard to spinning
and weaving and lam done. Great
care should be taken that the filling
of a piece of cloth be twisted and
woven in, as even as possible, for if
it is not, it cannot full even and will
always look badly after it is dressed.
This trouble will,generally be Eivoid
ed by having one person spituill the
filling, and ,one person - 1n all the
weaving.
To all who *ill follow the above
suggestions ; give the aasurance that
they will have good rolls and conse
quently good cloth. 'J.H. H.

AGRICIMITIRAL Smrisrue.—The re
ports of the. Department Agricul
ture for November and December,
1887, contain the following statiati.
for the last year.
The corn crop of the country in
1867 was 775,820,000 bushels. This
is about 53,000,000 bushels less than
the total census return of 1860,which
was 838,792,740 bushels. Consider
ing the increase of population, this is
scarcely fOur-fifths of the products of
'that.. par. The yearly decrease of
the - apionnt, of grain produced per
acre country is a fact which
Bilotti - trivet the attention_ of eaten
‘tific - agricultrirists, and incliice them
to examine into the causes which pro.
duce such a.lionentable result.
The returns relative to cotton indi
cate.fullytwenty per cent, increase
overAhe.eropof the previous year.—
The' actual yield - fur 1866 was very
nearly 1,900.000 bales. That crop
was one of the moat unfortunate ever
grown—reduced by cold, wet weath
er in spring, drought in summer, in
sects, floods, frosts and other casual
.xies ; otherwise it would have Teak
ed two and a half million bales. They
estimate made for the coming crop is
2,340,000 bales. The crop of 1860
amounted to 5,386,394 bales.
The cultivation of hope is becoming
.an important department of labor in
this country. In .1840, the entire
yield of hope in the United States
amounted to 1238,412 pounds. In
;1850 it had ' increased to 4,467 ; 029
pounds; in 1860 the product was
nearlr 11,000,000 pounds, and; this
,year it will probably reach 20,000,000
pounds, one half of which are grown
in New York 4Wisaxisin ranks r COxt,
raising 7,000,000 pounds, of which
Sank'county produced 4,000,000.
The cranberry crop of ,1867 is, esti
mated at not less than 181,506 bash*
els ; New Jersey produced 105,000
bushels ; New England 87,500, and
the Western States 45,000 bushels ;
at an average of IlCppg_ bushel, the
• owl%will yield $750,000.
