How to Succeed in Bee-Keating. To secure success in gathering the honey in your field : . Ist. Reduce the number of your colonies to the snpply'of honey, 'geld ed by IL This must be reached by an investigation of the number of colonies already sustained and by careful experiment in their introduc tion. 2d. By so controlling their, swarm ing that the honey gathered by them shall be stored in the smallest num ber of hives, requiring the least amount of honey for winter and giv ing,the greatest amount in surplus. To accomplish .this, hives should be =used with a home for the swarm, for breeding and wintering,of from 1,600 to 2,000 cubic inches, and boxes upon the sides and top of the aggregate capacity of 100 to 150 pounds. So, mach room, with very free communi cation from the central apartment to the boxes, with the colony well-sha ded, will render their swarming so improbable as not to exceed one in three. If a bee, keeper hate a number, of swarms is old-fashioned hives, let him prepare an equal number of the new hives, and, when a swarm.issues, place iedn the new hive and the new hive upeiti the old stand ; move the comb from the old hive ; brushing off . the bees, the • whole will go into the new hive. If he places the worker brood comb in a box and the - box in communication with the hive, .the bees will enter it and hatch out all the brood, giving the amount of two Nil swarms to the new hive. - As each hive sends out its first swarm, treat - them in this manner. The result will be as many hundred pounds of sur • pins, as you have such swarms placed in your new hives, divide them--pla _ cing a part in a new field. I this statement confidently, from my experiments already made I had four hives of this description last spring ; two of them gave me two swarms each and 203 pounds of surplus in boxes of 6 or 8 pounds ; - two of them gave no swarm, but gave 297 poudds of surplus. Tqe result, from the four, was four new swarms and - 500 pounds of surplus—a: the rate of 16 new swarms and one ton of surplus from 16 colonies Having your bees already placed iu the hives described, you may, in future years, control your swarms at plea- ure. If you wish to increase, your cola 1 ' ales faster than they naturally swarm, near the close of the white clover honey harvest remove the boxes and - confine the colony •to the central apartment, and a swarm will issue - in a few days. If the swarms in crease too fast, so as to give danger of over-stocking, drive the whole colony in with the issuing swarm, and - thus keep your stock down to the de sired number in order to secure the greatest amount of surplus from your field. Mr. Editor,l have the fullest cot& .deuce that the adoption_of this syittem willtseoure the results here estima ted and give to the bee-keeper one ton -of surplus honey for every 20 ,colonies of bees, if the number is re strictedito the capacity.of the field. I should be pleased to listen to-any criticisms upon the proposed plat' or answer any inquiries. ALBANY, N. Yu JASPER Hew. WREN TO TURN IN CLOVER.—In the regioits where green crops are turned under for manure, there is a diversity of pructice. Some plow when the crop is in its most succulent state.— The rule for clover is when the heads are about half turned brown. The reason offered for this practice is, that the bulk o the crop is then greatest., and it under& es moat rap id-decomposition inlthe soil. Others do not plow in clover until late in the fall, and after it has been. - well pas tured. The reasons they give for this practice are. Ist. That turning the clover green, makes the soil sour, and has a ten ' denclip bring in.sorrel. 241. It has a bad influence upon subsegtient crops. 3d. In waiting until fall, you have the advantage of pasturing; land if the cattle are kept upon the pasture, ' as they should be, everything the field produces is returned to it. 4th. More carbonaceous .matter is returned to it. What you lose in tops, you gain in roots of the cloier, which have four or five months long er to grow. sth. Better crops follow. Some of the besrfarmers in Pennsylvania fol low this method altogether.. Others still wait till the following spring, and turn in the clover just as it be gins to grow. - Tug fences which inclose 25 lots of six scres,..each take up 20 acres 'of ground, tiiid keep's° much land frnm wearing . out.
