It is a well 'established fact that pure water reaches its maximum spe cific graVity at a trifle below 40 degrees on the Farenheit scale, and at 32 degrees, ice fo s ; that ice and freezing 'water are con se penny lighter than water at - 40 degrees to peratttre r that ice is nothing but water cr, stalized, and in the process of freezing, follows the well established laws of cuettil ization ; that water when at 32 degrees is a crystalizing solution" in which the crys tals form at the surface ; and that Crystali zation (freezing) takes place in a compara tively undisturbed liquid. With regard to anchor ice some of these facts seem to be contradicted. The ice forms in running wa ter, and is collected on the stones at the bodoni of the stream, until the mass be-. ; :, co es la}ge enough for its specific gravity to overcome . its cohesion to the stones, t‘h it rises, frequently-bringing up the slopes and gravel to which it was attached. The following letter from Professor Thum 1 4 of 'ale College, . gives an explanation of tb - Ise facts, which coming from the best . scientific authority in this country, on such, sejects, is worthy of attention. 0. ..... Ngtv HLVEN, Feb. 17, 1868. t i n ov. Davm griarr.—Dear Sir: In reply to your inquiry j about anchor ice, I believe th view held is, that the water where it fo s has become cooled down to the freez in point, although without ice forming in e mass .; and that when in this state, the stones, which are prominent objects in the , bottom, become the nuclei of crystalization and determine its taking place, as happens from the influence of prominent points in the bottom of a crystalizing solution. The water moreover is generally rapidly running water, and the motion seems to act in pre venting the freezing of it at the surface un til it has reached a temperature much be low, or somewhat below what would be re quired in still water. • - • • Yours truly, . JAMES D. DAIL& WYALUSING Cmcurr.—This circuit lies its the eastern part of Bradford County, on the east side of the Susquehanna river, embracing what we judge to be the best part of the county. The face of the coun try is rolling, some parts romantic, and all very picturesque. Wyalusing village,•situ .ate at the month of the creek bearing the same name, is a rapidly growing and prom ising little town with ninny advantages. The Lehigh Valley Railroad, connecting the cities of Philadelphia arid Harrisburg with the- north and west by way of the Swine iianna valley, is already in process of con struction, and promises to be completed in Al short time, opening this whale region with all parts of our great country. The existence of large quantities-of bituminous coal just across the river in the counties of Sullivan and Wyoming, is attracting very much business interest this way. A rail road from this place eastward to Bingham ton and from thence to Albany, &, iB seri ously contemplated. Five miles up the beautiful valley of the Wyalusing in a northerly direction, we have another little village, known as Camptown, which is a natural business centre, and is Leautilul for situation ; its water-power is as good as any in the county. and the place is lively and growing, haviig already a large woolen factory, one of the best flour ing mills in the county, three tanneries, saw mills, and - several floterrishing stores, and an academy. Here will have just se _ cured Panonage premises, including a 'comfortable house, good hain,n splendid lot, with some fruit trees, which, a little im proved will make the minister a 'very desir able home. The Methodist Society here is small, but .thare is a growing interest. 'Rev. D. C. Ormerran, Presiding Elder of Wya- Insing District, has settled here, which will have its influence for good on the place and the ehtireb. Four miles from Camptown, in a north easterly diroetion, we reach Spring Hill ap pointment, which is-on A t of the best in the -circuit, Hero we havelnyery neat and com niodimis eturcli, whiet was dedicated to the w hip of God, December 18th, by our Is much steemed Pr esidinalder, of which. a brie notice' from Bro. Mazy-has been public ed through. the Northern ,Chrislian Advo /, te. The Spring Hill people deserve lunch raise for their energy and liberality in ere ting this house to the Lord. The arcki ct, Bro. Boswonra, wbbra we com mend,'-, for his taste and skill displayed, cal so deserves great praise. The society have erected sheds around the church, and fur nisheil the house, with Sofa for pulpit, sofa ehaini for altar, carpets, chandelier, • and ' side lamps, all to correspond, and all with such economy, as not to,exceed three thou sand dollars. . ' - The Herrick appointment is about three miles from Camptmn, ins northerly direc tion, situated in a very fine farming section of the country, with, a growing and enter prising people. Hon. Breakfast &Dinner Castors, Elegant treble t platp ICE BUTTER 4- BEB.RTDISHES, CBAMBEBLIN is now keeping the Fantily Sewing - Machines. These Machines are superior to all others for family use, for the following reasons . • They sew with two threads eieect from tile spools, and require no rewinding. They are more easily understood and used, and less liable to derangement, than other ma chines. They are capable of executing perfecly, without change of adjustment, a much greater variety of work than other machines. The stitch made by theSe machines is much more firm, el , stic, and durable, especially upon articles which require to be washed and ironed, than any other stitch. t This stitch, owing to the manner in which the under thread is unwrought, is much the most plump and beautiful in use, and retains this plumpness an 4 beauty; even upon articles frequently washed and ironed; until they are worn out. The structure of the seam is each, that, tho' it be put or broken at' intervals of only a few stitches, it will neither open, run, nor ravel, bat remains firm and durable. _Unlike other machines, these fasten both ends of the seam by their own operation. • 'With these machines, while silk is used• upon the, right or face side of the seam, cotton may be used upon the other side without lessening the strength or, durability of the seam. This can be done on no other machine, and ja a great saving upon all articles stitched or made np with silk. These machinis, In addition to their superior merits as Instruments 'for sawing. execute the most beautiful' and permanent embroidery and ornamental work. You can get Sewing Machine Needles, and all articles pertaining to the machine business. ~ .. j T . • VretcH AND CLOCK REPAIRING, Don in the best manner, as lim• a! at low rates Wanda, July 18,1847. , • - * , ~....y. . ...._ .
