WI. The committee of the Ameri
can Institute, New York, appointed to ex
amine Sewing Machines, made a long; elab
orate.; and able report, of much interest to
the public; - The Machines are arranged ac
cording to •the stitch made, and the purpose
to which the Machine is to be applied, in
four classes—let , 2d, 9d and 4th—a clas s
ficatibn indicating the general order of merit
and inportance.
C.4ss Ist includes the Shuttle or Lock-
Stitch Machines for family use, and for man
ufacturers in the same range of purpose and
material. The Committee has assigned this
class' the highest rank, on account .pf the
"elasticity, permanence, beanty,nruWeneral
desirableness of •the stitching when done,"
and the wide range of its application. At
the head of this Class they place the Wheel
er & I Wilson Machine, and award it the
highest premium.. This has been the tad
form award of this Machine - throughout the
country for several years, and we think no
disbiterested person will dispute its justice
and property :
Cass 2d includes the Shuttle or lock-
Stitch Machines for heavy manufacturing
purppses.
Class 3d includes the Doublee-Chain Stitch
Maines. The Grover & Baker Machine is
plac4d at the head of this class. The Com
mittee objects to the stitch made by this,
machine, 'inasmuch as it consumes reoui
thread than any other stitch, and isaves / a
ridge projecting from one side of the seam.
This in the Committee's . ; opinlon i /must
usually impair the durability of the seam,
and often the beauty of the garments or oth
er articles so stitched, though some of the
machiiies making this stitch ,can be used
very iinccesafully for embroidery purposes. •
Crass 4th includes the Single Thread,
Tambour o Chain Stitch, Machines. The

making it for any premium.
