NidatititaL #grionitural for January, Winter is the' period for farmers and - gardeners to prepare for the cropii of next season. Many of the duties connected with the operations of the field may be performed in win ter, quite as advantageously as in warm weather. Plans for future op- ers, tions maybe laid, months before the time arrives for doing the work. Every farmer should have a worki ahop, where he can repair farm imple: meats and store them from the inju rious influences of the weather.. When cold Storms prevail, and highways are blockaded with , snow-drifts, he should have a convenient plut,e,where himself and boys may employ their leisure •hours in zepairing some tool, making a farm-gate, or some such work. Boys should be instructed in the use of tools. If they do not enc- , teed, the first time, in making a wa• ter-tight.joint, let them try again. A cheapboOk on edge tools, and a few dollars worth of tools delivered to an atbitious buy, witt now and then a word of encouragedent, will often to of incalculable value, not only in re straining him from doiug things that tend to vice and dissipation, but in developing a mechanical talent that may be of great sulltrantage in future years. Young men like to try experiments in performing numerous mechanical operations. This is an excellent practice, as it tends to unfold and de• velope the powers of the mind. Talk over with your neighbors the • propriety, of inaugurating a renova ting syz-tem of farm management.— Excellent suggestions may frequent ly be obtained from common laborers, who hive been accustomed to work, for many years, at certain branches 4 - business. Winter is the best time to procure seed-grain for sawing and planting, in the spring, Tnis job - is too. often neglected until the growing season • has cohimenced. Visit some good farmer, at a, distance, and exiliange seed-wheat, or seed-oats with him ; and have the grain cleaned thorough - ly and- put in barrels ready for use. There is a great advantage in ex changing seed of all kinds, provided one gets grain that is really fit to sow. Much of the grain that is used for seed, is scarcely fit for chicken feed. ")hen the sleighing - is good, and teams ue'ed exercise, it will pay to. open a Clay bank and haul clay and spread it or .the surface .of lawns - and meadiwa, where the sail is light. Of course,:a dressing of clay, applied to a heavy soil, would not improve its productiveness. Where land has produced grass for many years in succession, a thin dressing of clay will usually produce a luxuriant growth of glover, or other grass, pay ing well for the labor of top-dressing. On light sandy soil and heavy calca reous c'ay.suils, apply muck. It is better to compost the muck, if it can be done. • But the trouble is, only a few farmers will do it. Therefore, let it be applied directly to the soil, while 'snow is on the ground. The frosts and rain will prepare it for iiramoting the growth of crops. - Fruit_ trees of all kinds May be benefitted by spreading a dressing of iron filings, iron turnings, the sweep ings of blacksmith sh4,ps, or the lit ter that may be collected at iron foun t dries, around, the trees,' as far as the limbs extend in a horizontal direction. It will - pay to cart such material five or-six miles, when the sleighing, is good, to be applied -as a dressing around any kind, of treeS, bushes or vines that bear fruit. Such material can be spread Iq. the desired place, even when the snow is deep. Then, after the growing. season has com menced, let it be‘hoed into the soil.— The more of such litter the better for fruit trees.• Oxide df iron imparts health and productiveness to grow ing trees, and especially to grape vines • and a dressing of iron litter is •o l e a the most efficacious securities . -,a36lnst mildew, cracked, -- knotty and scubby fruit, that can be. employed. The present is an age of wonderful • improvements, in almost every de partment connected with agriculture, horticulture and pomology. And yet, Allure is opportunity for still further developments. Improvements can be 17 conceived and plans laid for their ac complishment, as well in winter as at any other time. The mechanical department is 1_ many years in advance of the cultural. The cultivation of, the soil 'Nis too greatly neglected, except-on certain farms. Thorough cultivation and fertilization have accomplished wonders in some sections of the coun try. The satisfactory results in the line of bountiful crops of grain, and crops of choice vegetables and fruit, on numerous farms, should encourage tardy, cultivators of the soil to adopt a renovating- system . for the ensuing year. The *nee sheep, the beauti ful horses, the fine cattle and swine that ate found in large numbers all • over q r copntry, are the result of the effurtl of thinking and laboring men One common mistake with a large proportion of American farmers in overstocking their land, and a want - of thoroughness in their operations In many instances, two cows are kept, when if 11le same feed were ap propriated to the maintenance of only one good cow,the yield of milk would be rim larger than, from two cows. Here is an opportunity for improve • tent. • The same is true, in certain instan-, ces, of field crops. If one acre were: cultivated thoroughly and brought up to its greatest productiveness, by the; application of rich manure and fre quent :plowing, a given quantity' of, grain Or vegetables could be produced , at a Much cheaper rate, than to raise the same amount on two 'or three actes; by the common, superficial sys tem of husbandry. Farmers and gardeners should keep in. mind the beautiful and important czaupensation principle of paying back to the soil a full • equivalent for 'every crop raised, We can't cheat the soil. If the grihnrdli mannred with straw, the burden of straw in the next crop ftilt be heavy, and the yield of grain dr r vegetables light.— Fertilize the seed•bcd with grain producing material, and-•the(rop,of grain will far exceed the titie yield. . One of the greitest evils in the world is that men praise more more than practice virtue: The pmise of honest indus try is on every tongue ; but is very mre that the worker is respected more than the drone. eroctrite GROCERY, PROVISION.
