Shal'Stock be Bold as Datmo3d,
• One of the most - diseouragi*pros,
pects before the' • farmer is wben he
has a lets& *want of live ;sit-on
hand at the opening of wihter, - the
prospective value of which iidporeas
leg while that of the grain and bid-.
der which they 'must necessaqly con
sume in: order to thrive well is core
partitively high-and prospectively in .
creasing. It is-not pleasantbuEnnesa•
to fatten hogs, sheep or, cattle for
market with corn which. the feeder
knows= would bring mere.-,money if
• sold iri•the bushel. With the teams,
Mitch cows and young Mock the case
is somewhat different, for they are
expected to make their returns at a
further peribd in the future, and time
may set things even.' , However,
,there remains this consolation that
the profits of feeding - stock have been
pretty have fOr the past few years,
and our farmers are mostly able to
stand one bad season ; but every en
deavor which forethought should sug
gest can be made to turi the balance
'as near the right side as, possible. -
The farmer who accompanies stock
grothig with grain raising, making
it part of a system of mixed hi:Label];
dry, i has by far the best chance of
success` ill times like these. On the
one bend he has compensatory piofits
arising fnem•different operations, and
op the other he is more able to shift
his plans somewhat and keep or sell
as may seem best. ' Our advice to
such farmers is do not sacrifice your
stock. If you cannot afford to take
the market price for your pork when
it is well fattened, put it in the bar
rel and the smoke house and wait a
while ; perhaps, if you have warm
pens and . other conveniences, and are
- well located, it will pay to hold over
a fewbf the most thriving for the
butchers in the spring. Neither will
it pay to sell your two or three, or
half-dozen steers, or your twenty-five
or fifty wethers—the pink of your
.flock-,-at a low figure early in the
winter for the sake of saving mune
. grain and hay.for-,the market. A
great many will do just that thing,
and half fattened stock will therefore
be crowded on the market and de
press prices ruinously. You had bet
ter inatead take very good care of
such stock, make them - - comfortable
through the winter, feed well and
regularly, and- sometimes between
next March and the middle of June
those steers will fetch a good, paying
price, and 'the wethers will sheer hea
vy fleeces and be snapped up by
butcheim immediately after being
shorn, leaving a fair profit in lour
pockets for your outlay of labor and
food. By taking this course you will
do jest what the majority of farmers .
in your situation will omit—and make
money by.the'ciperationt" One of the
successful farmers of this State has
said that be had made more money
by feeding-stock for market when
grain was high and other people
were afraid to pursue the same course.
While weighing other conaiderations,
the niiiking of manure should not be
forgotten or lost sight of ; if you re
ceive!fhat only as pay for the labor
of feedieg and earning for the stock,
be assured that it is very good com
pensation. The English farmers
willingly take up with such-a return,
and.we also are fast learning not to
slight any means whereby the ma -
more pile may be augnmented.
Canso TIMBER.—The question :is
frequently asked : "wheals the time
to cut timber so that the worms will
not eat it ? " The folloiring direc
tions by one who seems to know, may
contain the desired informations Cut
the timber from September to Deceth
her, and you cannot get a worm into
it. October and November are per
haps the best months,,and are sure to'
avoid W,ortns. Yon cut from March
to June land you cannot save the tim
ber from worms or borers. May used
to be called 'peeling time; in my boy
hood, and much was then done in prq
curing bark for tanneries; when the
sap is pp in the trunk and all the
pores are full of it, whereas, in the
fall, and early in the winter those
pores are empty--thenis the time to
cut, and there - will be no .worms.—
When you see an ox-bow with the
bark tight theti are no worms, no
powder post,and ydu cannot separate
it from the wood ' • - and what is, true
of one kind of is true of all kinds of
timber, and every kind hes its peen-
Harkins] of worms. The pine has, I
believe, the largest worms ; and
these worms work- many years ; I
have found them alive Itnd at work in
white oak spokes that I knew had
been in my garret over twelve years,
and they were much larger than at
first ; they did not stop in the sap,
but in the, solid part- I do not think
of buying timber, unless it is cut to
the time above alluded.
HOW TO SrS GATE PosTs.---Take
equal quantities of water-lime and
quick-lime, and mix with Band ; put
two or three inches of mortar and
coarse gravel in the - bottom of the
hole, so the end of the-post will not
come to the ground ; then set your
post in, top-end down ; fill in several
inches of coarse- gravel • pound it
doWn • then more morta r and more
gravel, and so on until the cement is
raised above the ground several inch
es around the post. Slant it away
from the post in every direction so as
to turn off the water ; then take coal
; tar and a brush, paint around the
'bottom of the post, and fill the inter
stic between the post and cement
with coal tar. Only mix, enough
mortar for one hole at a time. Youi
post will be is . solid as if set . in
stone ; it don't • heave out With the
frost and sag around and pull the
boords off, as the water and/iiirsan
not get to it. - . 0.1 W .; C.
