Agricultural Notes for IkMI A rJ a
la:Northern latitudes thizi'm'atch•
word will be, tinting several sums
months—"Prepare for winter , ---1
stop, lip the cracks—keep out the cold'
air." A fair supply
.of fresh air is a
source of life and health to people and
to all kinds of domestic animals.- -
But too much of this good thingeis as
fatal to life and liealib,,as the water
'of the briny deep will pe to the fam:
fishing mariner, when clinging to.a
portion of his wrecked vessel, long
ing for water, when nothing but a
boundldss sea surrounds him.
Stop the cracks in the stable floor,
the large •cracks in the wainscoting,
and the orackS about the stable doors.
But, Cut a large hole down through
the mow, and open the windowstn
the attic of the stable, to let out the
foul air; and to admit pure air. If
the boards on thelarnor stable have
shrunk, so that large open cracks let
in. a-torrent of c,ld air, cut off the
nails - with a ft eharp cold chill, some
\weritit'!day, Joint the boards and nail
than on again. This will require
few - hours work and afe pounds of
But the profits .may be set
down! in figures representing the
value of the health of horses, andhun
dreds of. pouuds.of meal and hay.—
. Iliirses contract cold, sometimes, as
rOdi/y as :a person, when cold air
• falls on them ; and a current of cold
air °lra - mulch cow, will be the means
of appropriating much of the mate
ri• .that would make rich milk, to
keB,ping hei body comfortably warm.
Stopping the cracks with mortar,
in the cellar wall, will sometimes sub
serve the same purpose of a protec-
tion made ar manure or straw on the
outside: Whenever it is difficult - to
keep the temperature of a cellar
above the freezing point, the better
.way is to - put fire iu a small stove ii
the cellar, during the coldest weath
er. If all the cracks are properly
stopped, a very little fire will keep
everything, from freezing. All kinds
of fruit and vegetables -should be
kept where - the atmosphere is as cold
as it can be, without freezing such
articles as will be injured by frost.
In some dwelling houses, the win
dow sashes were fitted very loosely,
so that they often rattle, during a
windy night, as if a band of midnight
robbers were making desperate efforts
to effect an entrance.
Many people erect a small tempo
rary vestibule, is* four feet square,
around the outside door; and others
hang a second door on the outside of
the casing, to keep 'out the cold, both
of which will be the means of saving
much fuel, during the dreary winters
of the Northern Stateri
It. all fruit trees and bushes that
bear fruit have not been properly
protected, let them not be' neglected.
Last winter, thousands upon thous
ands of large fruit trees in full-bear
ing, were girdled by mice,so that they
died. - The surest_way_to save trees
frenli - the depredations of mice and
ralits in winter is, to raise a mound
of-,,,earth a few inches high, around
each tree, and wrap a few thicknesses
newspaperof or coarse wrapping pa
pet around the body of each tree, and
secure it with coarse 'wrapping yarn,
anu apply a coat of coal tar to the
oaper. This will be found a complete
Heeuriry ; and the tar will not injure
the trees. put, if tar be applied di
r( etly to the bark of fruit trees, it is
liable'to injure, or kill them.
- Grape vines in latitudes north of
dew York city—except in certain,lo
.7ct.lities—should be cut loose from the
trellises, and covered •with earth. In
many localities south of New York,
it will, pay exceedingly well to lay
down grape vines, raspberry bashes
'and blackberry bushes. We have
seen hundreds of grape vines, in dif
ferent parts of New Jersey, during
the past summer, that, would lime
yielded more than twice the quantity
that did grow on them, if they had
been laid down during the winter.
Raise a little wheat. Almost ev
cry farmer in the Yew England States
might raise wheat enough for his own
family, by proper management. If
the land is too wet, drain it. Then,
plow the ground deep, at any time
during the winter. If the stratum of
mould be thin, turn the soil with a
common plow as deep as the mould
extends. Then, bank up the sub
stratum with a subsoil plow, which
will pulverize the seed bed without
tuning the mould ,beneath the cold,
stubborn subsoil. Apply a liberal
dressing of fine manure, and harrow
it in. The best soil should always be
kept on the surface. There is no diffi
culty in growing a fair crop of wheat,
provided. -the seed has been well se
lected from year to year, and provi
ded alio, the - ground is thoroughly
cultivated and fertilized with rich ma
nure, that will make grain rather
than straw. Manure that has been
made. of nothing but hay and straw,
will produce a bountiful crop of 'gras`s
and a large yield 'of wheat straw.—
But, straw will net make wheat.
Mingling various kinds of fodder
together is- an eic,ellent practice.—
Neat cattle and sheep will eat more
straw in a day; cif, they are fed some
hay and a small; quantity of grain,
than if they were confined solely to
straw. Sheep will thrive-iiiaiisfacto
rily on bright straw ir-they get a
pound of grain each per day, with a
few mouthfuls of turnips, or potatoes
and water. Lambs should have not
less than lair -a-pound daily of grain.
Oats and Indian corn will make ex
cellent food for lambs.- Rut, what
ever may be the food of sheep .Or
lanibs, they need aldry , placeday and
night. A shelter that lees. a portion
of the rain through= the roof, !it
_and
yard that is not dry, will make a very
- unprofitable place fir. sheep of any
kind.
Improve the mild and favorable
weather to top-dress lawns ; to pick
stones and sticks from- meadows ; t , to
cut timber to be hauled after snow
has falkfi ; to cut up and grub, up
hedges of various kinds of busliles ;
end to consumate numerous small
' jobs that were necessarily neglected
when the labors of the field were ur
gent. Much labor may be.perforined
during The winter. mont4, in the
den and on the forth, if the manage.
ment is timely and judicious.
