In order to have the hugest-and
beet specimens of all kinds of frait,,it
is necessary to thin - it out, to some
extent, where the crop is ample. The:
smallest and poorest fruits should be
removed.
Surface tills alone will not pro

peciallyin a dry season ; and,wheth
er damp or dry, implement which
will best pulverize the soil is what
the farmer and gardenermost need.
The farme r zi of Long Island are
suffqing this season from the potato
rota The losses from disease last
year are renewed this season on a
much larger scale.. —ln some places
fields embracing rainy acres - are
wholly'blasted.- The Mercer variety
to be the most affected.
Jelliee are always acceptable, and
,a great ornament: to the table. Quin
ces, crab apples and fall pippins,
make the very best. Currant jelly
shouldbe made when the fruit first
ripens. After straining the juice,boil
gently half an hour before addingthe
sugar,. after which it needs little
more. i Cool a small quantity oin a
dish before taking up, to
. see if it
thickens.

Thelbenerit derived from 'frequent
stirfing of the surface soil in dry
weather, especiafly if it be of a com
pact natme, is derived from the ad
mission of air emitaining moisture.—
Many cultivators think that all that
is required of them is to keep the
weeds from grciwing among their
planti and they never stir the soil
except for this purpose ; but our best
cultivators have learned that frequent
mowing of the soil is very beneficial
to atll crops especially in time of
drouth. -
This is the time when weeds ripen,
if left to themselves. -A day's work
now, if proper directed, may save a
days' work' next-season. Clear out
the weeds from the corn and potato
fields, therefore, cost what it will, and.
it will save expense in the end ; of
all slovenly practices,.by far too com
mon among us, that of letting the
weeds overtop the potatoes and ripen,
and shed their seeds on the lands
the worst. Yon may mark the good
and the bad farmer by it arcirtainly
, as in any other way. -
After haying comes a4erioil of
comparative leisure , on moat farms.-.--
There is a time .for a little draining,
ditching, cutting bushes and other
similar improvements. Many swamp
or wet meadoW may. now be taken in
hand and brought into cultivation;
and a lot of material for the compost
heapor cow-yard, thrown out, and
be put in the way of' preparation for
use. No thrifty farmer will neglect
to provide the proper material for ad
ding to the fertility of his land. If
muck is perfectly dried, it will hold
about nine-tenths of its own weight
' of liquid manure.
The most important work for ill
gust is the preparation of the ground
for fall seeding. Summer fallows are
to be worked, and stubble grounds
plowed ; the latter should be turned
over as soon ;as possible atter-being
cleared of grain. Time is wanted for
- weeds to start before the final wt
irk
ing preceding the 'sowing., and it is
better to let the. soil receive the gi*od
effects of the air, sun : and :rain, and
become light and pulverized before
the seed 'is depodited in it. At least
the_ stubble should be well harrowed
or gang-plowed . early, to start the
weeds.
°
It has been frequently aserted that
properly ° nnderdrained subsoiled
lands never suffer from dronth.—
Who cannot -name many farmere, who
lose their crops from dronth, at least
once ,in ten years, and still have never
experimented to know whether they
can underdraiii and subsoil their land,
-for one-tenth the value of their crops,
or whether such subsoiling add un
derdraining will save them,' from
drotith entirely ? And. those who
. doubt this fact, should they not make
the experiment, or visit the farms of
those who, have,to know of its truth
It is thought, by the most of far
mers, that the only way to have a
good meadow is to . plow up, and seed
down every three or four years ; but
this is a mistaken idea, as meadiiws,•
if the soil is not ora very light loam,
Will improve by age [or a number of
years, if treated in 'a proper manner
—:-which is to pasture as little is pos
sible, top4resa with plaster, , at the
rate of 200 pounds to the _acre once
in two years ; use barnyard 'manure
as a .top-dressing, at the rate of SP
teen loads to the acre, which should
be applied in the month of October'
A meadow that has been " treated i
this manner, liar been mowed six
seasons, and has a better 'mud on,
and a better prospect for a good crop
this year than it has had for any time
since it waif seeded ; and had a bet
:- ter crop of Iv oh it last season than
for' several years preview. •
TALKATM men seldom read. This
