How to kill Daisies.
Tits ox eye daisy is a great nuis
ance ou many farms: It is to be
to and more or less upon almost every.
Linn, Instead of being destroyed as
fast as they appear they are allowed
to multiply until they overspread the
,whole land and, become a source of
) at merely annoyance bat of,positive
injury to premise's. Indeed next to
.leinada Thistles they are to be depre-
Atvd and 'provided against: In an
address delivered some time ago by'
4-;olon Robinson Esq., who owns a
larm.in West Chester county, New
York, he alluded to the ox-eye daisy
stud the, way to get ' rid of it, in the
following 'way
When I bought the land it was as
thickly set with daisies as any field
I ever'saw. I did not believe in them
for hay or pasture. I did' not know
that salt would kill thetii, but I found
the first dressing greatly diminished
the slovenly farmer's crop:
The second 'dose did the, work, I
found next mowing time, when they
had predominated over all the grass
vs for years, scarcely a single bull's
eye to be seen npon.an acre. In their ,
place came white and. tea clover timo
thy, red•top and Jane grass.
Do the farmers esteem these better
than . daisies ? I do. If you do mot,
why all I have to say is;this is (now)
'a free country and you - may grow
them. I shall salt and kill them. I
had rather grow clover and grass.
But killing daisies is not all the
benefit I derive from salt. It killed
It•• worms, and the moles" notfinding
their accustomed food discontinued
burrowing titder and killing the sod,
and it grew and flourished.
But that is not all. Manure is good
for nothing, until it has met with
solvent. Some vegetable substances
are not soluble in rain water, ,. and al
though capable of making good ma-.
nure are good for-nothing In thiir
inert condition. The action of salt,
lime, plaster, potash, etc., upon dead,
inert .vegetable .flber in the soil, is to
cause it decay And become food for
'the owil.g grass.
Dig up s.id in any old hide-bound
meadow or poo: "runorit" pasture and
you will it Still-of black dead
roots. ' If you dieaguin after the ac
tion of the salt or other mineral ma
nures you.._will find a ver y great.dif
fetence in Abe product. In short, you
havealade two blades of grass grow
where only one grew before. What,
if over: all this country the same re
sult conk be produced ? WhO can
calculate the increase of wealth ? It
alone would forever pay the interest
upon the national debt, and that, at
least,. would prove a national bles
sing.
I have seen some hay fields the.
present season where three-fourths
of thEi weight of the crop wardaisy.
At a little distance it appea4l to be
ail daisy. This was the case in a
fieldt Auburn. The flea-bane over
grew7the clover.
Snch a field as that I think I can
clear of the pest of all good farmers
at a cost not exceeding $3 an acre,
and even here ' where transportation
Is most, expensive. I - did it upon my
own place in Westchester county, at
less than one dollar an acre. Again
-you ask, how ? I answer, with salt.
Nothing else. That is sure death to
-.daisies. At first I used three bush
els not. being sure - of. its effect, I
think I got a ton of hay from. three
bushels of sat, which was applied
..early in the silting, about the . time
the grass began lo look green. Upon
a i
th stubble I put three bushels more,
d since that I have applied ten
m re bushels. The cost in New York
was six, cents a bushel at the packing
houses, where it is brushed off dry
salted pork. .
CLEANLINESS IN THE DAIRY.—The fol
lowing are the rules drawn up by the
manager of one of the most successful
cheese factories in New York State,
for the guidance of those sending
milk to' the factory,in order to secure
cleanliness, purity,; and the least
waste possible.
Never under any circumstances,
send a can of mil to the factory that
has not been strained. A tin strain
er pail is beat, but a clean carefully
scalded cloth, stretched upon a neat
little frame, which :may be placed di
rectly over the can,- .will answer.—
This I all-important, and any
one who will examine the contents of
the strainer, at any factory, will be
convinced of it.
2. See . to•it that,the milking be per
formed in a cleanly : manner, and nev
er tolerate filthy .hhbits in'milkers.—
; It is unjust to the purchasers and to
I the consumers of our cheese.
' .3. Pay wore attention to the cans,
especially to the seams, covers, and
faucets, in hot weather be particublr
ly vigilant. A thorough rinsing at
night, and a rinsing, washing, scald
ing, and sunning in the morni ng, . will
suffice, 'though it is very desirable
that in hot 'weather the cans and
faucets be scoured . with salt twice a
week.
4. When it is possible avoid the
use Of all wooden vessels. Tin is the
only ifit article for pails, &c. When
wood is used, extra care must be em
ployed in cleansing. Beware of
freshly painted pails, for their use is
dangerous.
5. See to it that when the cows are
driven from the pasture, they be not
chased by dogs norm any way hur
ried and heated.
6. Always have leaky cans promp
ly, repaired.
- 7. In portions of the year, when
milk is sent to the factory only once
daily, always put the night's milk
into the can (into two if you have
them), leave the cover off, setin a
cool place and stir the mass with a
dipper several times during the eve.
ning.
TO ' - DESTROY Asre.—Get ,a large
loese sponge, wash it clean, and
-sprinkle it, over with sugar, and lay
it- where moat the ants do congregate
~—they will soon fill every cell, and
'it will be to .them a sell, too, for you
have only to dip your sponge in hot
,water, to slay them by the hundred:
Ax Atberican, being asked why he
