How to Select Choice Cows for Milk.

commend the subject to the notice of
uur dairymen—that is calves may be
selected that will make very deep
milkers, before they are able to stand
alone.
Reader you may think this rather
young to determine the qualities of
cows, at this , very early age. lf,they
do not have the marks of making
good milkers at this age, I thinkitLiey
never will at all. If it is desirable to
raise calve 4 that will make good mil
kers, raise all calves that have, six
good sized teats that are well apart,
as all sueli calves make the very best
of milkers.' •It is much better that
they shoul l d .be. in their new milk at
two years :old, as .they make much
gentler iti;d ° better milkers. Many
handsome red° heifer calves are rais
ed on account of color more than any-.

GRASS FOR HOMES.—Many persons
think that horsesithat are kept in the

lowed to eat grass. They think it
will make the horse soft,wishy-washy,

dition for hard work. This, is partic
ularly the case with some of theztrain
ers of trotting and running horses.—
And horses that are kept up/for farm

cause their drivers think they will
not cat hay so well, /This was form
erly the case'morethan it is now.--
, But these are all 'erroneous' opinions
c' and practices .'and are giving way,
gradually, tda more reasonable and
natural system of feeding.
Grass/is the natural food of the
horse ; It is cooling and healthful
food. It keeps the bowels open and
sharpens the appetite. It proniotes
_digestion, and removes fever from
the system. Therefore, by all means,
letthe horse nip grass fifteen or twen
ty minutes daily.. Horses that are
kept up the yeat . round for farm
work should certainly be allowed a
• 'nice nibble at grass every day. They
work hard, and' all they get for it is
'something to eat. ILet them ,have,
then, what they - all like so well.—
