Hints About Work
Animals.—Cows at pasture must
not lack. pure and ,fresh water—stag
nun! pools arc a poor_ ',source_of sup-.
ply. SO steck.ought to be forced to
drink from them, and, least Of all,;
milch cows. Calves are better pas
ture I byltheairlves than? with other
stock. Young horses often get the
had habits of running after and Strik
ing, thetn; if they feed trgether. An
old horse will take care of himself ,
among caws, but colti, o one or two
years old, are. .ieedless, and, if pas
tured with cattle, may be hart by
their horns; without any real malice
k:in the part of cows. , Working stock
4 /Should not lie over night in the pas
ture. It huvery well for them to have
a few hours, in which to graze, during
some part of the day, but both cattle
and horses work better on good hay,
. and some) provender, corn and oats,
rye-sh,trts, and the like. • The amount
of feed may be graduated in accord
ance, with .the, average amount of
work required; but it should be uni
form. MI animals, not at pasture;
shot,ld have some green feed-7.per
haps one-third of all they eat. This
sliould be Cot, wilted, and brought to
the yard or stables for them, and be.
ready when the day's work is done.
- Harness and Yoke Galls.—Wash
with castito soap and cold water, and,
if po,ssible, bind on a piece of sack
, Mg; wet with water, to remain over
night. Relieve pressure upon the
sore spots by shifting the-harness, or
by 'padding, and prutect,froin flies
; with grease amd, pine tar mixed, du
ring the day. ,
Sheep are distressed by the gad-fly
this monttt.and next, and : should be
protectedt y tarring. their noses.---:
Daub the tar oh their noses, extend !
in.- up, where they will nut rub it off,
in b fueding. The fly la: s eggs - in the
nostrils, which hatch, and:the worms
ascending, cause the "grub in the
head."
Hogs.—Provide .swine with roomy .
pens, to work over all the litter and
weeds that can be gathered, besides
sods, muck, etc. The amount of ex
cellent manure made is enormous.
Wepis.--Suffer none to go to seed,
is easily , written, but very hard to
carry out. Still, the nearer we can
live up to this injynction, the easier
will it be to carry it out, year after
year. Many weeds,,pulled or cut up
iu blossom, will ripen seed while dy
ing, but few, the seeds of which are
n_,t fully. mature, will 'survive the hog
pen, in root or - seed. It is never too
late to pull ducks in the mowing.—
C.lnatia thistles, cut a few times be•
low the, surface, will disappear.—
Carrots are biennial, and, perhaps, in
a few cases, will Hie a third year, if
they cannot blossom the second ; and
we haveAtrong faith, though not pos
itive. assurance, that the seeds will
not germinate alter the third year.—
So, two years cultivation will almost
always clean them out.
3fowings.—lf grass lodges badly,
cut it without reference to fitness.—
Timothy is fittest when it is just out ,
of bloom ; ,orchard grass and clover
-bloom at the same time; and should_
be cut when the latter is in fullest
flower. Cut all grasses, before the
seed will shell after curing. The
-best time to manure grass,is just af
ter mowing ; the best m .nure fine
muck compost, with a modicum of
ash -s, bone dtist and plaster. Spread
with a shovel from the cart, and go
over the land with an iron, toothed
horse-rake, to spread and knock the
lumpato pieces, and work them into
the sward.
• Hay and Grain. Caps.—The cheap
ness of fabrics will now permit the
economical rise of caps for hay cocks
and shock§ ofF' grain. Four, feet
square is a good size, and loops fu.
pins at the corners are the best fast
ening. Once using sometimes pays
the cost.
Hoeing.—floe to kill weeds, to stir
the soil, to replace earth washed off
4 by rains. The stirring of the soil is
a great security against the effects
of drought. •It enables - the plautif to
sget4e full advantage of showers
and trews. It enables the ..ir to cir
culate freely tiwough'the upper strat
um of earth, and to penetrate the low
er, taking moisture with it, and de
positing it in the cool soil below the .
slit lace. Work the soil as deeply as
convenient, 4Rd not disturb the roots,
of crops. As a rule, avoid raising
hills, either) about corn or potatoes.
Perfectly-flat culture requires, how
ever, deeper soil than we ordinal ily,
have on all 'fields.
Turnips after Corn.— With the last
'hoeing of Corn,if the soil be tolerably
deep, and the cultur6 fiat, turnip seed
may be-sown and hoed in lightly.—
The corn is cut tip and. removedwhen
the kernels are glazed; and the tur
nips often make a good :crop, having
6 weeks to groW.
Turnips Alone.—Turnips may be
sown any time this month. On tole
- rably mellow ,soil, it is best to sow
in drills, and give as much cultivation
• as other cares admit-Of. Rutabagas
= will make a good crop sowed before
the 15th or 20th--better for the'table
than if sowed earlier. They do best
in drills,,too, thinned to 6 or 8 inches
apart, In sowing - turnips broadcast,
use as little seed as possible. One
pound•to the acre, if it can be evenly
distributekl,is better than more,though
two pounds, is the usual quantity.—
Sod land; or newly broken tip land,
should be plowed repeatedly and har
rowed,to rot and kill sods and weeds,
then freshly harrowed before the
seed is'sown. _
Buckwheat is a valuable crop, es
pecially as a weed killer. Three
pecks of seed is enough for good
land ; more is required on pbor. Sow
.
about the middle of the month.
Cabbages.—Set .out cabbages on
land left vacant by early potatoes
and peas, or on fallow ground well
worked, limed and dunged. Keep
well hoed.
Soiling Crops.--Corn, sorghum,
-peat . ' and oats; etc,; may be sowed, for
soiling, any time this month. ..
Buller.--If the feed is good, the
butter tuarbe equal to that made
last month, provickri the dairy is cooli,
i or, rather, of. the right temperature;
which is about 58 deg. .to 60 dok
- Fahr, 'their. If the pastures are
