Being requested by the - bereaved family to write an account of the case,; we will, state the particulars'iu3 they have been given us hS peraons best qualified to fall them cor rectly,. • - • • The deceased left his home on Moore's Hill, (three miles from Ulster,) on Friday, May- 31st, at, about 6 o'clock, m., fn com pany with a\iother lad, Joseph Morrison, with the, intention of going to attend an Indian Entertainment at Ulster. Shortly after the 'started, they were 'joined by a ( third lad, of the name of 11-Olfert-Vataon, who, coming into the road out of a field lith a pistol in his hand, hailed them, say ihg that: " his pistol would not go off." It appears that he had somewhere dropped it in the water, while hunting for wood-chucks. The lad Morrison said, "Let me try it." Thereupon he took it, and tried it, withosit effect. Afterwardi each of the three bogs tried it, repeatedly% and, as it •did not go ,off, the conclusion NOIS, that it would not. 'Young Morrison finally turned it toward the boy Nietson, ~and tried it ; whereupon this boy said he did net want to have it snapped at him again. The boy Thonstis Wright, (so it is reported) immediately said he was not afraid to have it snapptid at him ; and then, yosing Morrison pointed it toward him and Filled, in which instance the pistol was unexpectedly discharged,— The ball struck the unfortunate boy just in front of the ear, passing nearly through theshead, and lodging in front of the oppo site ear. The result was fataL The lad fell tathe ground; and never }spoke after ward. Young Watson ran to :the dwelling of widow Sarah %rouse, : twenty or thirty rods distant, and gave the alarm, and she and Mr. James Eloivie,' a near neighbor, hastened to the spot, finding the boy lying senseless at the roadside.' He was carried into the dwelling of -Mrs. Stronse, where he expired at about 7 o'clock. ; • The lad who fired the pistol, as soon as he saw the fatal effect of his careless act, threw down the:weapon, ran away from the scene, and was no where to be found. As he did not return home during the night, search was isasle for him on the next day, ` 1 Saturday,) and also on . the next The whole region was explored, suid the pond, known as Hovey's Pond; was drawl! . off." He was discovered , on Monday morning, under his ' fktheit's barn, lying in a sheep trough, in a stiff and apparently senseless state, Dr. Mills, of Ulster; was at once called to see him, and, at the time of thin writing, the 1644 is reported to be much bet'. ter, "though ttill greatly cast down iii spirit; and strangely shy and taciturn. He i$ the adopted son of ids. Andrew 'Morrison, and is fourteen yeirs of age. • , "The firing of, th: pistol is, We think, justly regarded as an act of boyish rash ness, rather than at act proceeding from any criminal } l mpulse.
