Potato Raising-
At a moaning of the Farmers' Club
in lYiiusylvauia the best method of
cultivating potatoes was discussed.
The following repert is given by a
correspondent of the Germantown
Telegraph :
"One member stated that he always
planted his potatoes in the same field
with Lis corn ; the preceding- fall he
carefully and deeply ploughed the
ground, and in the spring, when dry.
enough, he harrowed it thoroughly
and deeply with a sharp, harrow
drawn by a double team until it was
thoroughly torn up to the depth of
five inches ; he then furrowed it out
ready for planting'.
"Another member followed pretty
much the same plan, except that in
stead of the thorough harrowing he
c trefully ploughed the ground with a
sharp plough, so set as not to tear
up the sod again, but merely pare the
loose soil off. He considered that
potatoes planted in the sod were more
liable to rot than those planted in
mellow ground full of decayed and
decaying soil, at least such was his
experience.
"A third member preferred the
ground undisturbed until spring,when
he would plow it thoroughly, follow
ing the plough with a steel subsoil
plough, stirring the whole soil to the
depth of not less than eighteen inch
es, and after a thorough harrowiug,
mark out and plant as before.
"Another member preferred if pos
sible to plough early in the fall and
seed down with rye, and not plough
again until spring, when he would
allow the rye to get as large a growth
as possible before ploughing it down.
This of course brought out the mem
ber who,as stated above, was opposed
to decaying vegetable matter in the
soil which was to produce the potato
crop. This produced a lively discus
sion, which seemed to end in a major
ity condemning the presence of vege
table matter in a decaying state as
being likely to induce rot.
"These four plaus were all that
were advocated in favor of sod for
the potato crop, and as each one was
offered it produced a lively attack
from the stubble side of the question
and a lively defence from the four
'soda.'
"A majority of members were in
favor of planting potatoes in the corn
field of the previous year for the fol
lowing reasons, viz.: that the ground
can be more thoroughly prepared ;
that they come into the rotation bet
ter for the manure which may he ap
plied to them and remain unexpended
in the soil, and may benefit the ensu
ing wheat crop ; that the crop can
he more easily kept clean and the
ground be more mellow to work with
the hoe-harrow.
"Some were in favor of fall plough
ing and sub-soili&g and some were
-ot; some ploughed in the fall and
suLsoiled in tke spring, and others
preferred both operations in the
spring, and some only ploughed once
with the common plough.
"One of our most extensive potato
growers gave his plan as follows :
1' irst to thoroughly plough the ground
in the fall deepl/ and well, then back
furrow or ridge it up all over the field
by throwing furrows against each
other as close as possible, without
filling up or throwing the loose soil
over the crest into the next furrow.
In this condition he allowed it to re
main waiting till near planting time,
when he could level down the ridges,
plough and subsoil, mark out and
plant."
GRAFTING. —Every farmer should
learn to do bis own grafting. It is a
very easy operation when once un
derstood. A sharp penknife and a
good line saw are indispensable.—
Splitting the stock so that the bark
shall not be bruised—and shaping
the scion wedge-fashion both ways,
preserving also the bark uninjured—
and placing the rim of the wood of
both stock and scion exactly togetli
er, so that the sap can intermingle—
there is no danger of failure if prop
erly waxed. We make a shoulder to
the graft and think it adds to the cer
tainty of success, though probably
weakens it. V e prefer also two eyes
"i buds to a graft, and would rather
have only one than more than two.—
One year's wood should always be
used when it can be obtained, as it is
more certain to take aud grow more
vigorously.
We wish to remiud those about pre-,
paring grafting wax that we have
found four parts of rosin, one part of
beeswax, and one part of beef tallow,
to be the best proportions. Melt
them in a skillet (which is the best),
or a cup, and mix well. It should
remain in the vessel and be used as
needed. Twenty or thirty scions can
be waxed with one heating-up. When
much grafting is to be done, a little
lire for heating the wax should be
made on the spot, between two bricks
or stones.
We have seen various preparations
lor making grafting wax, and we be
lieve we have tried them all, hut pre
fer our own. Applying warm or hot,
does no injury to the graft. The ob
ject to attain in the proportion is that
the wax will not crack in cool, dry
weather, or run in warm weather.—
April is the best time to graft.—Ger
mantuicn Telegraph.
hob'- Tomatoes should be set out on
the lightest and warmest soil. Water
them thoroughly a few hours before
transplanting, if necessary, and re
move each plant carefully by itself,
with a ball of earth round the roots.
In this way they will receive no
check. A light, rather poor soil, pro
duces the earliest fruit, but a mode
rately rich soil the greatest crop.—
brained on a frame, they look neater,
but we are not sure that they are
much earlier or more productive than
when allowed to trail on the ground.
\ CI RK >or Felons.—An exchange
■ ays : "A poultice of onions, applied
morning, noon and night, will cure a
felor. A'o matter how bad the case
plitting the finger wi 1 be necessary,
it this poultice be used. We have
seen it tried several times, and know
that the remedy is a sure, safe and
speedy one.
