our town a visit last week, meeting with
many of his old friends. He is in good
health.

the mountains south of this place, were
white with snow. At Barclay,the snow lay
upon the ground ten inches in depth. An
unusual and unseasonable visitant.

small space in your paper to express my
heart-felt gratitude to the good people of
Towanda, who rendered me assistance in
time of need. I have thus been able to
build a small, but comfortable dwelling
house which will diminish the expense of
living, and the cares of declining years. I
trust I shall be able to show during the re
mainder of my short life that the kind fa
vors of these friends have been highly ap
preciated and worthily bestowed.
SARAH OODEN.
RAIN AND FRESHET. —The rains of
last week raised the streams to an unusual
height, threatening the destruction of much
property. The river,at this place, was swol
len to an extraordinary degree, yet not
equal to the freshet of March, 18G5. The
embankment at the Barclay basin, showed
signs of giving way, but by the energy of
the Superintendent, Mr. WARD, the danger
was averted. All comunication was sus
pended for two or three days,but we do not
hear of any serious losses. Bridges over
the small streams were taken off, but the
larger bridges are all safe.
&' A destructive fire occurred at
Faetoryville, Wyoming Co., on the evening
of Saturday the 4th inst. Eleven buildings,
in all, were destroyed. The fire we under
stand, first broke out in the Good Templars
Hall over the dwelling ot Mr. Wells, which
with the buildings appurtenant, was entire
1\ destroyed. Orlando Reynolds lost house
blacksmith shop, and barn—Mr. .Warner a
wagon-shop and contents—Henry Newcomb
a Cabinet and Furniture shop and contents
—Mr. Beam a dwelling—Mr. Curry a dwel
ling, barn Ac. The fire is said to have been
caused by some careless Templar ; there
having been a meeting at the Hall that eve
ning.

BOLD ROBBERIES. —The residence of
Mijumin Griswold, about two miles below
Wellsbnrgh, was entered,on Tuesday night,
and a pocket book taken from his pants
pocket in his bedroom, containing sllO in
ilrafts and checks and SIOO in bills. Upon
walking in the morning, and finding his
loss, he directed a favorite black hank mare
to be brought out of the bam, to come to
Elrnira with, that he might put detectives
on track after the bold burglars. But, be
hold! the stall was also empty, and an ad
ditional $250 in horseflesh was added to his
previous losses. The mare was jet black,
except a little white on each land foot, star
in the forehead, tail a little crooked. A
russet bridle and saddle were taken with
the mare. Fifty dollars reward is offered
lor the recovery of the mare and the appre
hension of the thief, or twenty five dollars

A GOOD BOOK. —A very desirable
and interesting volume is now being pub
lished entitled Woman's Work in the Civil
War. It is mainly written by Dr. L. P.
Lrockett, the author of at least three or four
books relating to the war, and Mrs. Mary
C. Vaughn. The introduction is from the
pen of Dr. Bellows, president of the U. S.
•Sanitary Commission, and among the
sketches of patriotic women we notice one
by Mrs. 11. 11. Stowe. The work which con
tains about 600 pages octavo, is neatly prin
ted on fine paper, beautifully illustrated
with steel engravings, and handsomely
bound. Many persons have been engaged
in collecting materials, and much time and
labor have been spent in its preparation.

County Teacher's Association, held at Le
liaysville Feb. Bth and 9th, a committee
was appointed, to examine and reccommend
a series of text books,for the use of the com
mon Schools in the County.
In accordance with that appointment, the
committee met at the Court House, Towan
da. March 23d. A quorambeing present an
organization was affected, and the following
resolutions passed.

dant with D.C. Barnes was indicted at Feb.
Sessions for larceny and burglary. In Ju
ly, 1865, the depot of the Northern Central
Railroad at Troy, in this County, was for
cibly entered, the safe in the office blown
open, and express packages, and currency
to the amount of about 811,000, taken from
the safe. Among the express packages was
one containing 810,400, in seven-thirties,
addressed to the First National Bank of
Towanda, sent from the Treasury Depart
ment at Washington. Notwithstanding the
offering of a large reward by the Express
Company, and the endeavors of detectives,
no clue was obtained to the perpetrators of
the robbery, until December last, when
McGregor and Barnes were seen under sus
picious circumstances, at Laporte, Indiana,
and being arrested and searched, upon the
person of McGregor was found 81900 in
7-30's, corresponding in numbers with
bonds stolen at Troy. The prisoners were
brought to Troy, and after undergoing an
examination were committed to the jail of
this county.
The Grand Jury having found a true bill,
the cause was certified to the Oyer and
Terminer, and came up for trial last week.
The prosecution has been chiefly conduct
ed by the agents of the Adams Express
Company, in connexion with District Attor
ney DA VIES . The Company was represent
ed by CLARENCE A. SEWARD, of New York,
and Messrs. PARSONS A CABNOCHAX, of
Troy. The prisoners were defended by
Messrs. MEBCUR A MORROW, of this county
and by Messrs. POMEROY and FISK, of Rome
N. Y. Witnesses were present, on behalf
of the prosecution, from Laporte, Indiana,
from Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia
and New York. On motion of the prison
er's counsel, they were granted separate
trials, and Archibald McGregor was placed
upon trial.
A jury having been empanelled, clerks
employed in the Treasury were called to
prove the sending of the package of $lO,-
500 in 7-30's to the First National Bank,
supported by the books of the office—the
notes found upon McGregor were identified
as a portion of those sent —and the pack
age was then traced and proven by the dif
ferent agents and messengers through
whose hands it passed, until it was deposi
ted in the safe at Troy by Mr. Hoffman the
agent there. It was also proven that Mc-
Gregor, in Company with Barnes, was at
Troy the day before the robbery was com
mitted. The defense called but two wit
nesses, from Rome, N. Y., who testified as
to the former good character of McGregor,
and to his being in possession of consider
able property, and having purchased Trea
sury Notes before July, 18C5.
The Counsel for the prisoner asked the
Court to charge the jury that the crime of
burglary had not been committed, as under
the terms of the penal code, a depot could
not be considered as a " public building."
The Judge so ruled, and instructed the jury
to return a verdict of not guilty upon the
count of the indictmeut charging burglary.
The jury, after a short absence, returned a
verdict of guilty of Larceny. The Court
sentenced him to undergo an imprisonment
in the Penitentiary for the term of three
years—being the extent of the time fixed
by law for the crime of larceny.
Com. vs. Morgan Wilson Conk lie. —The
defendant was indicted for larceny iu steal
ing SFJ, the property of John Collins, of
Monroe, Jury found prisoner guilty, and
Court sentence him to undergo an imprison
ment of one year in the Penitentiary.
Com. vs. John King stand. —The defendant
was indicted for the murder of his wife,
Almira Kingsland, at Sheshequin, on the
20th November, 18GG. For the Common
wealth, Dist. Atty. DAVIS, and Messrs.
MEBCUR & MORROW. For the Prisoner,
Messrs PATRICK & PECK, GEO. SIDNEY (.'AMI'
of Owego, and Hon. PU SSELT. THAYER, of
Philadelphia.
The empanuelling of a jury commenced
on Saturday morning, May 11, and nine
persons were sworn when the regular panel
having been exhausted, the Court, order a
special venire to issue for the summoning
of twenty talesmen—which having been re
turned, two additional jurors were sworn,
and the panel being exhausted, a special
venire was issued for the summoning of
ten talesmen. The first juror called was
accepted and sworn, completing the jury,
as follows r—John Carr, Hiram Kittle, .Si
meon Williams, V. It. Gates, Alrnon Stone,
Volney JJovier, Orrin Montgomery, William
Bates, Geo. S. Goodwin, Morris J. Cool
baugh, Benjamin Boss and Geo. Scoville,
who were severally sworn well and truly to
try and a true deliverance make between
the Commonwealth and the prisoner .it the
bar. The jury was placed in charge of two
Constables, who were sworn to permit no
one to speak to them, not to permit them
to separate, Ac., and Court adjourned until
Monday morning, at 9 o'clock.
At the coming in of Court ou Monday
morning, the case was opened by District
Attorney DAVIS, and witnesses were called
and examined on the part of the Common
wealth . At the time of our going to press
the examination of witnesses is still pro
ceeding.

en-Thirties wishing to convert them into
Five-Twenty Bonds bearing six per cent, in

This is probably the most favorable time
to make the conversion. If delayed until
